Fresh out of its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Kinds of Kindness” is one of the titles headed to this year’s Mediterrane Film Festival, taking place in Malta between June 22-30.
Other highlights in the festival’s first wave of programming include Jane Schoenbrun’s Sundance breakout “I Saw the TV Glow” and Meryam Joobeur’s Berlinale competition entry “Who Do I Belong To.”
The festival’s sophomore edition marks the first under the curatorial guise of Artistic Director Teresa Cavina, appointed earlier in the year. Cavina reorganized the festival’s program into four strands: In Competition, featuring films from across the Mediterranean; Out of Competition, featuring films from the rest of the world; Mare Nostrum or Our Sea, showcasing films dedicated to sustainability and the environment; and Future Visions, focusing on experimental VR projects.

The Mediterrane Film Festival, held in the Maltese capital of Valletta, returns for its second edition between June 22-30 with a revamped programming structure led by new artistic director Teresa Cavina. The inaugural Golden Bee Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cinema will be awarded to British filmmaker Mike Leigh, following last year’s Memorandum of Understanding between the British and Malta’s film commission to enhance the collaboration between the countries’s screen industries.
Speaking with Variety before unveiling this year’s festival program, Malta’s film commissioner Johann Grech said the festival was a “brainchild” of his, adding that the event is a “platform to keep us building our image. We want to push for further dialogue and cooperation between countries, and not just Mediterranean countries.”
“The size of our country has not stopped us from thinking big,” he continued. “The festival will not only allow us to strengthen our film brand globally,...

The Malta Film Commission has outlined its plans to take the Mediterranean island’s burgeoning locations business to the next level as it enjoys its busiest year ever, on the fringes of its new Mediterrane Film Festival.
Commissioner Johann Grech told an industry conference taking place within the new festival that after six years in the job building up Malta as a shooting location, his next goal was to take the country’s film industry to the ‘next level’.
“The ‘next level’ for film in Malta means creating a truly sustainable, year-round film industry, giving ever more opportunities to our people,” he said.
The country – which increased its cash rebate to 40% from 30% on eligible local spend at the beginning of 2023 – has hosted 20 productions in the first six months of this year, against 24 productions for the whole of 2022.

Malta has a rich history as a filming location with directors such as Ridley Scott, Paul Greengrass, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone all having shot big budget projects in the country across the last two decades. During this time, productions have been attracted by the country’s epic locations, generous tax incentives, renowned water tanks and skilled crew base.
But it has really been in the last five years that the territory has ramped up its efforts to attract foreign shoots to the European archipelago while also attempting to grow its local film industry. Malta now offers one of the most attractive cash rebates available, raised from 27 to 40 three years ago and, this year, it announced an “upgrade” on that rebate to enhance its attractiveness as a location amid the global production boom. Additionally, Malta recently announced a €40 million (40.1 million) investment from government to build a major new...

Malta’s planning authority has approved plans for the construction of the Mediterranean island country’s first interior sound stage to complement its existing exterior tank shooting facilities.
The new studio space will be built on 4,000 square metres at the Malta Film Studios at Kalkara, adjacent to its exterior deep-water tank.
A highlight of the facility will be an environment-controlled, indoor 2,000 square-metre water tank overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, giving the same infinite horizon effect as the exterior deep-water tank.
The planning approval marks a milestone for Malta’s film and TV sectors and is expected to boost its attractivity as an international shooting location.
“For long years, almost 60 years, we’ve been hearing that sound stages were going to be built in Malta. Today, we are writing our history” said Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech.

To say Jurassic Park is important to my love of film would be an understatement. Being an eight-year-old kid at the Glenwood Theater, seeing what would essentially change the filmmaking landscape is a memory that will be with me till my last breath. Jurassic Park defined the wonder of movie making and is as effective today as in 1993. Truth be told, I’ve enjoyed every entry in the Jurassic franchise, some more than others, but the spirit of adventure and spectacle is something that has yet to fade sixth entries into the Jurassic universe. And the latest, Jurassic World: Dominion extended edition, has just been released on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital (OWN It Here).
Dominion adds fourteen minutes with the extended edition. The original was no short tale, but these added scenes give a lot of depth to what was in the theatrical version. I traveled to Malta...

Long known to Hollywood for its water tanks, generous incentives and wide-ranging architecture, the Mediterranean island nation of Malta is making an effort to lure more international production. Whether it will succeed remains to be seen.
This year started well, with shoots of the third season of USA’s “Queen of the South,” National Geographic’s “Genius: Picasso” and Sky Germany’s “Das Boot.”
New film commissioner Johann Grech, who was appointed last December, has announced plans for a sorely needed revamp of studio space, which has yet to materialize. When it does, it could be the clincher that Malta needs to establish itself as a haven for long-running productions.
Grech, the Maltese government’s former head of marketing, says he’s not only working on adding soundstages but also busy “building a rapport with producers in China and India” to expand the tiny country’s customer base. Bollywood blockbuster “Thugs of Hindostan,...
