These days, practically everybody accepts the reality of climate change and the need for urgent action to be taken to develop solutions. The trouble is that developing any technology too quickly can lead to its environmental consequences being overlooked. That’s particularly risky when it comes to the deep ocean, because we still know very little about how its ecosystems operate, but what we do know is that they’re at the basis of global food chains and if we seriously damage them then we could be in very, very serious trouble.
Matthieu Rytz’s documentary spends some time addressing the broad context of this issue before focusing on one specific issue, a proposal to collect mineral nodules from an area of the ocean floor where they have gradually formed over thousands of years. They could be an extremely useful resource in the manufacture of batteries to help facilitate renewable power use,...

Aquaman‘s Jason Momoa narrates Deep Rising, a timely documentary that explores the connection between sustaining and preserving the deep ocean floor and battling the energy crisis. Momoa, who also serves as an executive producer, explains that 4,000 meters underwater on the ocean floor, an energy revolution is underway. The trailer then shows how corporations want to strip mine the ocean floor, disturbing the environment in pursuit of resources to be used making electric batteries.
Matthieu Rytz (Anote’s Ark) directs and produces, with Momoa, Sébastien Lépinard, Julie Lépinard, Shari Sant, Shannon O’Leary Joy, Tiffany Schauer, Jim Angell, Annie Roney, Addison Fischer, Olivia Fischer, and Dona Bertarelli executive producing.
“Ultimately, I want Deep Rising to plant seeds of hope and inspire us by making it clear that a green energy revolution is still within our reach if we are willing to radically put an end to our destructive behaviors and create...

"4000M down on the ocean floor, another energy revolution is underway." Abramorama has unveiled an official trailer for an important eco documentary called Deep Rising, from filmmaker Matthieu Rytz. This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and I wrote a rave review of the film which is now quoted in this trailer. As the world attempts to slowly transition away from using fossil fuels, the fate of the ocean has now fallen into the hands of major extractive conglomerates as they turn their attention to strip mining the deep ocean for all it's worth. Narrated by Jason Momoa, Deep Rising is the first ever film about manganese nodules and nodule mining. "In a riveting tale of geopolitical, corporate and scientific intrigue, [it] sheds light on the secretive International Seabed Authority (Isa), responsible for nearly half our planet's surface on the ocean floor, highlighting the vital need to protect...

Here’re the charts and segmentations of the cameras that shot the Sundance 2023’s documentary films. It proves once again that documentary filmmakers use different tools as compared to their narrative colleagues. Not surprisingly, Canon leads the way as the most trusted camera company among documentary filmmakers. Gladly, we see here Blackmagic, Sony mirrorless, and even iPhone. Furthermore, high-end cinema cameras are located at the bottom of the chart.

Jason Momoa is used to saving the ocean. He does that in his day job as Aquaman, a character intrinsically linked to the seas, in a series of movies based on the beloved DC property. But now he’s ready to do it for the real-life ocean as the narrator and executive producer of the the new documentary “Deep Rising.” “It’s pretty astonishing,” Momoa told TheWrap after stopping at our Portrait and Video Studio at The Music Lodge in Sundance about the footage captured in the movie, alongside the film’s director Matthieu Rytz and subject (and scientist) Dr. Sandor Mulsow.
The official synopsis describes the film as a “tale of geopolitical, scientific, and corporate intrigue that exposes the machinations of a secretive organization empowered to greenlight massive extraction of metals from the deep seafloor that are deemed essential to the electric battery revolution.” Director Matthieu Rytz follows mining...

We must take better care of this planet. We must change our ways and save what we can before it's too late. We must stop treating this planet like an endless mine to make money from. This excellent documentary is a potent reminder we must do more to protect our planet and its natural resources from greedy investors and rich schmucks who simply can't give up their addiction to profiting off of Earth's offerings. Doc filmmaker Matthieu Rytz returns to Sundance (following his 2018 doc Anote's Ark) with his latest feature film titled Deep Rising, a documentary about a precious resource hidden at the bottom of the ocean. I'm always on the hunt for splendid documentaries at Sundance, and this is one of my favorites so far. Not only is it about something important, something I didn't know anything about before watching, but it's an engaging doc in every way. Featuring a score by Ólafur Arnalds,...

Sitting down in The Hollywood Reporter’s Sundance Studio to promote his new documentary Deep Rising, Jason Momoa explained what drew him to the project and condemned the widespread use of single-use plastics and their detrimental effect on the planet.
Matthieu Rytz’s film explores the extraction of metals from the ocean floor to power the electrical battery industry. Momoa, who narrates the doc and serves as an executive producer, came onto the project because of his passion for the subject matter. “I look at my family, I look at my family’s friends, at the kids, and I just want better,” he explains. “I took a vow five years ago to go after single-use plastic, because it kills me — I live a single-use plastic life. I travel. I live on the fucking road. I sit on a plane and there’s a plastic bottle that’s a shot of water,...

You can get visual whiplash while watching Matthieu Rytz’s documentary about the geopolitical, economic, social and ecological ramifications of mining the planet’s ocean floors for metals.
One minute, you think you’re watching an IMAX documentary about gorgeous creatures of the deep, with enough amazingly translucent jellyfish on display to satisfy any stoner’s need for optical stimuli. The next minute, there’s seemingly endless footage of discussions going on in corporate boardrooms, congressional hearings, investor meetings and cocktail parties, with the faces of many participants blurred out as if they were appearing on an episode of Cops.
Unfortunately, there’s more of the latter footage than the former, with the result that Deep Rising, receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, can be a frustratingly (and ironically, considering the subject matter) dry experience.

There’s a great deal of visual enchantment in “Deep Rising,” if a somewhat murky conclusion to be drawn from it all. This second documentary feature from photographer Matthieu Rytz (“Anote’s Ark”) mixes spectacular views of deep ocean life with a gander at opposing sides in a largely under-the-radar international fight over whether to mine minerals from those hitherto unspoiled, barely-explored depths.
Trouble is, the potential consequences are not fully known, nor does the director do a great job of delineating arguments in either the pro- or anti-mining camps. So this conservationist statement ends up seeming a bit vague — albeit in an undeniably beautiful way, with narrator Jason Momoa bringing some marquee value. As aquatic eye candy alone, it should have strong appeal to programmers of non-fiction nature content around the globe.
Rytz opens with John F. Kennedy flubbing his way through a 1963 address announcing “an important national effort...

“Climate change is the greatest moral challenge of our world.”
Even as politicians and global players become more concerned with their annual bonuses and the next election, climate change has become a pressing global challenge, perhaps one of the most significant we have to face in the years to come. No matter what theories and arguments are discussed, the effects of the melting ice caps have reached each and every country. The effects ranging from dramatic changes in weather conditions, some of which permanently, to mass immigration, are likely to increase over the years. As a global village, it is our moral obligation to make measures against climate change our priority, but sadly many people and nations have not heard the call.
Considering climate change and global warming have become topics in our daily news coverage and school curricula, there is a certain danger linked to the issue. Even if...
