First Lady Jill Biden’s guests at President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address tonight will include Maria Shriver, singer and civil rights advocate Bettie Mae Fikes and Uaw President Shawn Fain.
The list of guests who will join the first lady in her box in the House chamber typically gives an indication of the topics that the president will address during his speech. The address, to start at 6 p.m. Pt, will be one of the president’s best opportunities to reach a substantial audience, as it is aired across broadcast and cable networks. That is particularly important this year as he runs for reelection.
Shriver, the former first lady of California, is the founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement and strategic adviser on women’s health and Alzheimer’s at the Cleveland Clinic.
Fikes, known as the “voice of Selma,” served as a member of Selma’s Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.

When Kate Cox was forced to flee Texas after state authorities denied her pleas to terminate a potentially deadly pregnancy, it laid bare the true cost of state control over women’s reproductive health. It’s also made plain that Republicans — despite their claims to hold the moral high ground on abortion — cannot defend the policies they champion when they present real-world consequences.
Cox, whose 21-week-old fetus was diagnosed with a deadly genetic condition, had been in and out of emergency rooms as her already complicated pregnancy deteriorated her health...

Jane Doe, the pseudonymous plaintiff who brought a challenge to Kentucky’s near-total abortion ban on Friday, is no longer carrying a viable pregnancy, her lawyers informed the court Tuesday. No details were provided beyond the fact that Doe “learned her embryo no longer had cardiac activity” the day before.
The circumstances did not change her lawyers’ plans to proceed with their challenge to Kentucky’s near-total abortion ban.
“Jane Doe was seeking an abortion in Kentucky and wasn’t able to get one because of the abortion bans — and that fact has not changed,...

The Texas Supreme Court ruled against Kate Cox, the pregnant mother who sought permission to obtain an emergency abortion, on Monday.
“These laws reflect the policy choice that the Legislature has made, and the courts must respect that choice,” the court’s seven-page ruling read. The court found that Cox’s doctor, Dr. Damla Karsan, had “asked a court to pre-authorize the abortion yet she could not, or at least did not, attest to the court that Ms. Cox’s condition poses the risks the exception requires.”

Kate Cox, the Texas mother who sought permission to obtain an abortion, has been forced to flee the state to get medical care, her lawyers said on Monday.
“This past week of legal limbo has been hellish for Kate,” said Nancy Northup, president and CEO at the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents Cox. “She’s been in and out of the emergency room and she couldn’t wait any longer.”
Cox, who lives in the Dallas area, was 20 weeks pregnant with her third child when the baby was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a fatal condition.

The Texas Supreme Court has blocked a judge’s ruling that allowed a pregnant woman with a fatal fetal abnormality to have an abortion.
The decision has brought attention to the state’s medical exception to its controversial ban on abortions after six weeks, which is considered one of the strictest in the nation.
The lawsuit was filed by Kate Cox, a 31-year-old woman currently 20 weeks pregnant. Cox sought a temporary block on the state’s abortion ban, as she has been unable to undergo the procedure.
The lawsuit states Cox’s baby has been diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition that is not expected to allow for more than a few days of survival outside the womb.
After the ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) warned Cox’s physician that she could potentially face civil and criminal penalties if she performed the court-ordered procedure.

A pregnant woman was temporarily blocked from obtaining an emergency abortion by the Texas Supreme Court in a ruling issued Friday evening, CNN reported.
The lower court’s decision was put on hold, and the Court said the case would remain pending. However, a timeline on when a full ruling would be issued was not given.
“Without regard to the merits, the Court administratively stays the district court’s December 7, 2023 order,” the order stated, per CNN. Texas attorney general Ken Paxton had previously requested the high court to reverse a...

Last week, Kate Cox, 20 weeks pregnant and a mother of two, received the worst news a person can get: her baby had a fatal condition known as Trisomy 18. The baby has no chance of survival, but under Texas law, there are only two options available to Cox: a vaginal delivery, or a C-section. Either option would risk her life or her ability to have children in the future.
Because of her two prior C-sections, Cox’s doctors advised her she is at a high risk for a uterine...

"We still have lots to explore." Another impressive short film to watch that will get your mind going. Vert is the latest short by British filmmaker Kate Cox. It's not what you expect, but will leave a lasting impression. "Blending sci-fi with human sensibilities, Vert is a beautiful film about the power of bravery, acceptance, and unconditional love to release a lifetime of internalized shame." A couple that's celebrating their 20th anniversary give each other Vr headset gifts that allow them to experience "their ideal self." Starring Nick Frost, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Olivia Vinall. Cox explains she had been thinking about how to write a script for something about identity. "At the same time I met with Nick Frost, and that evening the story just poured out of me." This reminds me a lot of the Black Mirror episode "Striking Vipers", also similarly about technology allowing us to experience a different identity.

As millions of Americans gather next week for Thanksgiving, they’re also bracing for the inevitable breakdown into shouting points some relatives picked up from cable news. And it may be about to get even worse.
What Fox News has done to help slant cable news to the right, Baltimore-based Sinclair Broadcast Group is now poised to do to the nation’s local broadcast news, turning it all into a hotbed of national partisanship.
In order to complete its nationwide takeover of the local news, via a $3.9 billion plan to merge with Tribune Media, Sinclair first needs permission from the Federal Communications Commission — which it is almost certainly going to get.
What exactly is Sinclair, and what is it doing?
Every large and medium American city, and most of the small ones, has a bunch of local TV stations. They’re usually network affiliates — channels that bring your local news...
