Ania Trzebiatowska has compiled an eclectic selection of fiction and non-fiction titles for the third annual Sands International Film Festival, which kicked off Friday evening in St Andrews, Scotland.
Mounted across this weekend in the ancient university town, Trzebiatowska — also a full-time programmer at Sundance — runs the festival with an impressive gang of part-time student programmers from the University of St. Andrews, a partner on the festival alongside Joe and Anthony Russo’s Agbo. The Avengers: Endgame filmmakers are connected to the town through Joe’s eldest daughter, who studied at St Andrews. The two Russos were in the building this evening.
“I love the energy of this town. I love how warm everyone is and how enthusiastic the students are,” Joe Russo said opening the event. “It permeates the experience of being here. And it’s such an incredible backdrop for the festival for those reasons. It’s great...

Jeff Goldblum stars as Zeus in the mythological Netflix drama. Kaos. Here’s the trailer for the upcoming show.
Writer Charlie Covell’s most recent show was Truelove, a dark drama for Channel 4 with a terrific ensemble cast including Lindsay Duncan and Clarke Peters. Covell’s other dark comedy drama, The End Of The F***ing World, about a teenager who believes himself to be a psychopath, is now on Netflix and is well worth watching.
Her next show is Kaos, the synopsis reads as follows:
Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods. Until he wakes up and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Neurosis sets in, setting him off on a dangerous, paranoid path. Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming – and starts to see signs of it everywhere. Zeus’ once reliable brother, Hades (David Thewlis), the God of the Underworld, is secretly...

Netflix has dropped a teaser trailer for the comedy fantasy 8-episode series ‘Kaos’, a modern-day contemporary retelling of Greek mythology.
Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods. That is until he wakes up one morning and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Neurosis sets in, setting him off on a dangerous, paranoid path. Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming – and starts to see signs of it everywhere.
Zeus’ once reliable brother, Hades, God of the Underworld, is secretly losing his grip on his dark dominion. There is a backlog of dead waiting to be processed and they are growing restless. Hera (Janet McTeer), Queen of the Gods, exercises dominion on Earth — and over Zeus — in her unique way. Charlie Covell might be known for the successful adaptation of the comic series The End of the F***ing World, but the British writer is currently working on a new show for Netflix, which is going to be released later this year. Kaos is an original work by Covell that is going to be a fantastic, mythology-inspired black comedy that will follow the adventures of Ancient Greek gods in a modern setting. Ahead of this year’s premiere – a release window has not been specified, as of the time of writing – Netflix has released the first trailer for the series as well.
Kaos is going to have eight episodes, as has been confirmed by the streaming service, and will see legendary actor Jeff Goldblum as the ruler of the Greek pantheon, Zeus; Goldblum replaced Hugh Grant, who was initially attached to the role. You can check out what Goldblum looks like...

You know Zeus. Greek god of thunder, curly hair, luscious big beard, turns into a swan? You’ve seen his face on statues in parks and on tile mosaics behind the counter in kebab shops.
That’s not the Zeus in Netflix’s new fantasy drama Kaos, from Charlie Covell, screenwriter of The End of the F***ing World. As played by Jeff Goldblum, the Zeus of Kaos looks more Tony Soprano than beardy all-father. And home-of-the-gods Mount Olympus? Think a lavishly appointed mansion such as you might see on Selling Sunset instead of a bucolic paradise crawling with nymphs and fauns.
Covell’s vision of Greek myth clearly comes with a modern twist, hence Zeus’ Casio watch and leisure suit collection in the first teaser trailer below:
As Goldblum explained at a recent Netflix slate preview event: “One may say it’s about the Gods, but a different version of the Gods.

"Honor me... that's a command, not a request." Netflix has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a series titled Kaos, described as a "modern day contemporary retelling of Greek mythology." Jeff Goldblum is Zeus, the King of the Gods. All-powerful, cruel, occasionally benevolent... he has no idea that the plot to take him down has begun. From the writer of “The End of the F*cking World” and the producers of Chernobyl. Kaos is a mythological dark-comedy series created by Charlie Covell. The series revolves around six humans as they discover their connection to each other and to a long standing ancient prophecy while they deal with corrupt and arrogant gods of the Greek mythology. The main cast includes Goldblum as Zeus (introduced below), Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades, Killian Scott as Orpheus, Debi Mazar as Medusa, and Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus.

Naqqash Khalid: 'Starting this film, I knew that this was going to be a young Asian man but I was going to commit an act of violence in that I was going to deprive them of any backstory and make him completely blank and view him through this kind of like colourblind lens almost and that being quite a violent thing to do as a writer. At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

Feature debutant Raine Allen-Miller’s “Rye Lane” led the nominations at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) with 16 nods.
“Scrapper” by debutant Charlotte Regan and veteran Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” scored 14 nominations each while Molly Manning Walker’s “How to Have Sex” had 13, Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s “Femme” 11 and Mahalia Belo’s “The End We Start From” nine. The nominations were revealed by actors Susan Wokoma (“Enola Holmes”) and Morfydd Clark (“Saint Maud”) at an announcement event at One Hundred Shoreditch, London.
From 2022, the awards went permanently gender neutral for acting categories with the traditional best and supporting actress and actor awards being replaced by best lead performance, best supporting performance, best joint lead performance — for performances that are the joint focus of the film — and best ensemble.
The winners will be announced at the BIFA ceremony on Dec. 3.

“It’s absolutely clear, there is a real appetite for British independent cinema in France,” said artistic director Dominque Green.
Sasha Polak’s Silver Haze scooped the top prize at this month’s Dinard Film Festival, the French seaside festival that spotlights UK and Irish cinema for French audiences, that ran from September 27 to October 1.
Berlinale Panorama title Silver Haze won the Golden Hitchcock for best film. Polak’s feature reunites the Dutch filmmaker with UK actor Vicky Knight, after working together on Dirty God in 2019. It is loosely based on Knight’s own experience as a child, in which she survived an arson attack.

For writer-director Naqqash Khalid, questions are more important than answers and this premise is something the academic-turned-filmmaker explores heavily in his debut film In Camera, which recently premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The bold film, which opened to positive reviews after it screened in the fest’s Proxima section last week, is the first feature to come out of the 2019 iFeatures slate, the low-budget Creative UK scheme from the UK’s BFI Film Fund and BBC Film.
In Camera is a satirical drama that follows Aden (played by Nabhaan Rizwan), an actor who is hoping to break into the UK film industry but faces a series of challenges that make him question his desire to be accepted by a system that wasn’t built to include him. After a cycle of nightmarish auditions and multiple rejections, he finally lands a job role-playing as the dead son of...

“You’re it. Whatever it is. That’s you,” someone tells aspiring actor Aden (Nabhaan Rizwan). It’s a thought that echoes throughout a film that will present an increasingly slippery sense of ‘self’. By the end you might not only ask yourself if someone is losing their marbles but whose marbles, in fact, are the ones that are being lost.
Aden - or No 2408 as he is frequently referenced - is, as all actors must be, something of a blank slate. We see him performing a ‘reflection’ exercise with another wannabe, as he mirrors back her words, echoing her, “I’m embarrassed” with “You’re embarrassed” repeatedly. But what starts as a film with strong ties to the acting world, soon slips into a consideration of modern societal roles more generally, what they might or might not mean and who is responsible for their construction.
Aden is low on the pecking order.

Naqqash Khalid always wanted to make films.
An English literature graduate of Salford University in Manchester, England, who began his working life as a lecturer in the university’s School of Arts and Media, Khalid dreamed of working with actors to create films that reflect our 21st century experience of a fractured world, dominated by mobile phones and social media, where time no longer seems to follow a linear path.
His chance to make his dreams reality came when a script he wrote while still teaching at Salford was picked up by iFeatures – a BBC Film/Creative England/British Film Institute program for debut directors. A development grant in early 2020 enabled him to realize his script “In Camera,” which had its world premiere Saturday in Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Proxima competition slot (for the Variety review see here).

The thing Aden likes about acting, he tells someone who cares enough to ask, is “how organized it is.” You know where you stand, quite literally, because someone tells you; you’re given things to say, and told how to say them. Order and certainty aren’t typically seen as benefits of the thespian calling, and even Aden doesn’t sound entirely convinced of his own words. But then Aden — played, in a performance of brilliant, diamantine versatility, by Nabhaan Rizwan — is never entirely convinced of himself, period, when he hasn’t a script to follow or a character to inhabit. A simultaneously playful and savagely pointed satire from first-time feature director Naqqash Khalid, “In Camera” traces how its young British-Asian protagonist’s sense of identity is progressively diminished by the cynicism and tokenism of the industry he’s trying to crack — though as it turns out, when you lose yourself entirely,...

Kaos has been a long-time coming. Netflix first announced it had commissioned this British dark comedy reimagining Greek mythology back in 2018, but the pandemic meant that filming only started last year, and there’s already been one major cast replacement.
And even though we’re no closer to an official release date, the impressive cast list, unique premise and solid production team make Kaos well worthy of your attention.
‘Nothing Is Sacred’ in This Bold Take On Greek Myth
Set over eight one-hour episodes, Kaos is a contemporary reimagining of Greek Mythology exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. The official synopsis describes how six humans will discover they’re part of an ancient prophecy:
“Zeus has a wrinkle. He’s worried it might mean the end of the world and it might. Because on Earth, six humans unaware of their importance or their connection to...

Patrick Somerville, showrunner of HBO Max’s limited series Station Eleven, has addressed the issue of shows disappearing from the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.
“TV world is very weird right now,” the writer and producer noted in a social media thread that highlights the topic from a creator’s perspective.

“TV world is very weird right now,” the writer and producer noted in a social media thread that highlights the topic from a creator’s perspective.

The non-linear storytelling in "Station Eleven" makes for even more uneasy moments than your average story about a catastrophic global pandemic. Any scenes that take place before most of the world's population dies out carry an ominous weight to them. "Station Eleven," post-apocalyptic fiction, and recent world events all remind us that while the disease is scary, it is often our fellow humans who pose the greatest threat in these situations.
Among the more foreboding multi-episode storylines set in the early stages of the pandemic is the lockdown of young Kirsten (Matilda Lawler), Jeevan (Himesh Patel), and Frank (Nabhaan Rizwan) in Frank's Chicago loft apartment. While we watch them surviving under difficult circumstances, we do so with basically no hope. We know they end up separated, so we can only clutch the edge of our seats and wait for episode 7's climactic moment.
Though the groundwork for tragedy is laid throughout the series,...

"Station Eleven" was never going to be the kind of show that sweeps the Emmys. I knew this when I heard that Emily St. John Mandel's much-loved book about a post-apocalyptic theater troupe was getting an adaptation. I knew it when I watched the show and felt my heart shatter, rebuild, and expand in real time. And I knew it when the Emmy nominations came out, with the series' recognition largely relegated to the creative categories.
But "Station Eleven" is a show about hope -- fragile and tentative, yet ever-evolving -- so I'll forgive myself for still hoping Himesh Patel might have been recognized by something as silly as an award show tonight for his profound turn as Jeevan Chaudhary. Perhaps it's only appropriate that his performance as man who spontaneously becomes a child actor's caretaker during the height of a global pandemic remains a joy that exists only...
