Welcome to Samdal-ri, the Korean drama starring Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun ended last month. Released in December 2023, the Kdrama received a lot of love from viewers worldwide. Even though it has been 2 weeks since the last episode aired, fans can’t stop discussing the beauty of the show’s storytelling, the characters and the performances.
However, actor Ji Chang-wook recently faced flak from some fans for smoking. On January 26, the Welcome to Samdal-ri team released a behind-the-scenes video featuring Chang-wook and other actors. In the video, the Healer actor smokes an electronic cigarette on the set. To the uninitiated, it is not legal in South Korea to smoke or vape in public places. Smokers must smoke only in designated smoking areas.
In South Korea, fans don’t spare celebrities for breaking rules. Hence, after the video was released, many expressed their disappointment on social media.

Netflix seems to follow a very specific recipe for his Korean content, movie-wise at least, with the majority of the titles being action-oriented, featuring impressive visuals and at least one star in the cast. “Ballerina”, which premiered in this year's Busan before beginning its rather successful streaming path, definitely ticks all the boxes, being a rather stylish, revenge actioner featuring Jeon Jong-seo of “Burning” and “Money Heist: Korea” in the protagonist role, and Park Yu-rim of “Drive My Car” as the reason behind the revenge.

The sequel to 2018’s Believer has left fans more than dissatisfied. It’s already an established fact that the only good thing about the film is Han Hyo-Joo’s performance, which has taken over social media for her badassery alone. The film attempts to fill the gaps like plastering over the Mona Lisa, making a terrible sequel to a well-received film. What made Believer a big hit was the impressive cast, the action-packed story that kept you on the edge of your seats, as well as the impactful ending. Believer 2 begins before that open ending, leading up to the moments there, and then completely ruins it. We suppose you can’t trust anything with Believer in the title right now. If you’re looking for some fantastic Korean thrillers to make yourself feel better after seeing this blunder, here’s the perfect list for you.

"Where is that bastard?" Netflix has released this Korean action film streaming already. Ballerina is the latest film made by Korean filmmaker Chung-Hyun Lee. It premiered at the Busan Film Fest and launched for streaming on October 6th this fall. "Cold-hearted and cruel, the hell of merciless revenge begins now, for my one and only." Grieving the loss of a best friend she couldn't protect, an ex-bodyguard sets out to fulfill her dear friend's last wish: sweet revenge. Jang Ok-ju is a former bodyguard who sets out to hunt down a sex trafficking ring headed by Choi Pro. Starring Jeon Jong-seo as Jang Ok-ju, with Kim Ji-hoon, Park Yu-rim, Shin Se-hwi, plus Kim Mu-yeol, Jang Yoon-ju, Kim Young-ok, and Joo Hyun. This reminds me of Kill Boksoon, another female-driven action film quietly dropped on Netflix earlier this year. Also not to be confused with the John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas...

It is abundantly clear that the noir genre is making a huge comeback in the Asian market. Just last week, we saw Lost in the Stars, the Chinese film, come to Netflix with a similar influence. The action genre itself has had a renaissance this year, with John Wick coming back and a remake of the classic South Korean revenge thriller Oldboy. It’s always fantastic to see a female-driven action film, especially when she defies all laws of physics and is absolutely badass. In this oversaturated world of revenge thrillers, Ballerina sticks out like a radiant gem. We can’t go without comparing the beauty of this film to an actual ballet, with scenes of pastel colors and dream-like sequences that make everything look a little less deranged and much more peachy. It is a jarring contrast with the commitment the film has to violence and the race against evil.

Ballerina is a South Korean action thriller film directed by Lee Chung-hyun, starring Jun Jong-seo, Kim Ji-hun, and Park Yu-rim.
“Ballerina” is a stylish revenge thriller with a changing pace and a solid performance by Jun Jong-seo, who leads the cast in this film of villains and heroes with a satisfying final sequence.
While this well-executed film achieves its goals, it fails to truly shine among similar revenge thrillers. However, it does entertain and boasts strong direction, particularly in terms of aesthetics.
The film demonstrates the wisdom of restraint.
Plot
Ok Ju has a violent past that she has forgotten until one night when she discovers her friend, who has committed suicide. Everything leads her to a man who abuses girls, records them, and threatens to release the videos.
But she only has revenge on her mind.

With two years of reflection, it isn’t surprising that the unprecedented success of Netflix’s Squid Game wasn’t instantly reproducible. But it’s very surprising how few of television’s biggest platforms have even attempted to reproduce that success. There has probably been a visible uptick in available Korean programming in the States but — perhaps in tacit recognition of the fact that Squid Game became Squid Game because of its stealthy word-of-mouth explosion — there hasn’t been an evident rise in shows getting a big promotional push in the hopes of becoming the Next Squid Game.
If nothing else, Paramount+ is giving a push to the new six-part drama Bargain, from writer-director Jeon Woo-sung. It’s frequently easy to see why.
Bargain is not, of course, the next Squid Game. Nothing is. Or when something is, it will probably emerge out of nowhere.

Right from her very first feature, Jeon Jong-seo has established that she is a daring actress, when it comes to her film choices. Starting her career on a very strong foot as Hae-mi in Lee Chang-dong's acclaimed “Burning”, she has gone on to play a psychotic serial killer from the past in Lee Chung-hyun's “The Call” and had a frank conversation on sex and relationships in the romance “Nothing Serious”, while also making her international debut in an Ana Lily Amirpour feature. Yet again, she subverts expectations and changes genres, this time going full-action mode in “The Call” director and real-life boyfriend Lee Chung-hyun's new work “Ballerina”.
Synopsis
Ok-ju used to work as a bodyguard. She excels in physical activities like martial arts, sword fighting, gunmanship, and motorcyle riding. She is friends with Min-hee, who is a ballerina. Min-hee asks Ok-ju for a favor. She wants Ok-ju to take revenge on Pro Choi.

"I won the auction! Where do I get my kidney?" Paramount+ has revealed a new official trailer for a Korean survival thriller series called Bargain, now with English subtitles. This debuted in Korea last fall, and it's playing at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival soon as well. It's a combination of survival stories: an earthquake hits trapping a bunch of people in a collapsed building. Inside it is an organ-trafficking ring, posing as a brothel to lure in men. More from TIFF: "Based on Lee Chung-hyun’s award-winning short film of the same name that premiered at TIFF '16, this darkly funny, endlessly entertaining, and unpredictable series keeps us guessing what might be around every corner. Every character ― buyers, sellers, and bystanders alike ― is thrown into a desperate struggle to survive not only the crumbling building, but also the circumstances that brought them there in the first place." They are action thriller “A Bloody Lucky Day” and period drama “Queen Woo.”
Korean TV content has been a growth vector for international and regional streaming platforms in Asia. Competition for new originals is fierce and expensive, but Korean drama and increasingly, unscripted shows, continues to attract critical and commercial kudos.
Paramount+ said that new Korean drama series “Yonder” has been the most-watched international show in the U.S. in its first week of availability (since Aprile 11). Its upcoming Korean series “Bargain” earned the best screenplay award at Canneseries on Wednesday and will upload in summer this year.

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is a South Korean remake of the Spanish hit, La Casa de Papel, starring Park Hae-soo (Squid Game).
The series is directed by Kim Hong-sun (Luca).
Plot
The story takes off in an era when North and South Korea are reunited. A professor gathers a group of talented thieves from both regions to carry out a heist of the recently minted coin.
About the Series
In the recently added episodes we are offered more action than in its predecessor, and a more elaborate production. However, it does not impress in its premise that is quite similar, perhaps, too much.
Ideal for thriller and action fans. This Netflix series is now in its second season.

Capitalizing on the general public’s wide superhero knowledge due to all the releases over the last decade, many interesting things are possible here without a ton of backstory needed. Newcomer Jeon Jong-seo really impresses as the film’s lead. She’s practically mute but can convey so much with just a look. Her movement is extremely awkward and helps to sell the world around her. The few times she talks really leave an impact. But her...

"Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" is likely a name many cinephiles have heard over the past few years, but don't know a lot about. That's understandable, since Ana Lily Amirpour's third feature was announced back in 2018, but didn't have its world premiere until a few years later. Premiering at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, the title has been floating around on the festival circuit and was acquired by Saban Films this past March.
While the movie is still a bit mysterious, there are some things we can piece together before its release this coming September. The first is that it will, of course, be a bit wild. After all, Amirpour had already solidified herself as a director that dives into the bizarre with "A Girl Walks Home at Night" and "The Bad Batch." The second is that it touts Kate Hudson in a role that is far from the...

"If you see this girl - do not look in her eyes!!" Saban Films has debuted a trailer for a wacky superpowers thriller titled Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon, the latest from filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour (best known for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night). This first premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival a year ago, but so many critics hate that it has been forgotten until now. The film is a "mind-bending adventure" set in the swampy neon-lit streets of New Orleans. At its center is a girl with strange and dangerous abilities who escapes from a mental asylum and rejoins the chaos of modern-day civilization, on the hedonistic streets of the French Quarter. It stars Jeon Jong-seo (from Burning) as Mona, Kate Hudson, Craig Robinson, Altonio Jackson, Ed Skrein, and Evan Whitten. I really, really did not like this watching it in Venice, it's trashy and hollow and aimless.

The Movie: "Burning"
Where You Can Stream It: Kanopy (Free), Pluto TV or Tubi (Free with ads)
The Pitch: An aspiring writer reconnects with a young woman he knew growing up, only to become mired in head games with her mysterious rich friend as she disappears without a trace.
In the wrong hands, ambiguity can be a cop-out and a crutch for weak storytelling. There are times when "open to interpretation" feels like code for "not a lot going on." While rewatching "Burning" this week, it occurred to me that part of the reason its narrative works so well and remains so tense and haunting is because, on one level, it's all about how we interpret life's ambiguities.
