It's game over for another Showtime series.
The premium cabler has canceled Penny Dreadful follow-up City of Angels after a single season.
“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,”Showtime said in a statement.
“We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set nearly 50 years after the original series, during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s.
It takes place in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.
The characters are connected in a conflict between the Mexican folklore deity, Santa Muerte, the caretaker of the dead and guide to the great beyond, and her spiritual sister, the demoness Magda, who believes mankind is inherently evil and aims to prove her point.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels was canceled by Showtime, according to Variety. The resurrection of the Penny Dreadful brand opened with its patron, Santa Muerte, as she carries the souls of the newly dead to whatever comes next, just so long as it’s not on the premium cable channel.
“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” Showtime announced in a statement. “We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”
The series starred Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) in multiple roles, ethereal and otherwise, but predominantly as a supernatural shape-shifting agent of chaos. Nathan Lane captured the patter of the time period as the partner of Daniel Zovatto’s starring turn as the first Chicano detective in Los Angeles. The series also starred Kerry Bishé as a famed radio evangelist,...

The Showtime series “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” premiered on April 26, 2020. While technically a spin-off of the original “Penny Dreadful” series, “City of Angels” is more of a spiritual successor than direct continuation of the original’s story. The series examines racial divisions of the past as supernatural deities loom over the proceedings. Explore exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show below.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels ends with the same lines in which it began: “There will come a time when the world is ready for me, when nation will battle nation, when race will devour race, when brother will kill brother until not a soul is left. Are you ready?” Only this time, Magda (Natalie Dormer) isn’t saying it to her sister, Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo). She is saying it to one of two brothers who are now on very different sides of a struggle they were both born to.
Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) doesn’t tell Magda whether he is ready in the penultimate scene, but her gloved touch fills him with a burning determination. She approaches him from behind. At first, he appears soothed, but then acknowledges this is not a friendly touch. He looks like he’s making a choice. Magda appears to believe he’s reached a foregone conclusion,...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 10
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels closes out the season in a strangely moving way, which is par for the course for a series like this. It’s not because of who and what is lost during the episode, but the movement of the arc which is thrown off-kilter. “Day of the Dead” opens with a funeral march which swings into an uprising. The repercussions will rattle Los Angeles heavily for days, but the implications will rearrange the urban landscape forever.
The future belongs to “big, fat men” like Mussolini, Huey Long and himself, Councilman Charlton Townsend (Michael Gladis) declares over a celebratory breakfast. The event which makes him so happy is the exact kind of thing someone in his position should be appalled by: a riot in the very city he has sworn responsibility to.

Penny Dreadful may have been a beloved, star-studded peak television offering that closed up shop after just three seasons, but the classic-literature-crossover Showtime supernatural series’ legacy lives on with a sequel. The new show is called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and it’s airing now!
While the sequel series makes a dramatic shift away from the settings and characters of 2014-2016’s Penny Dreadful, it has the support of its key personnel, namely creator John Logan, who returns to serve as writer and executive producer, joined in the latter capacity by Michael Aguilar, who’s worked on recent Showtime offerings Kidding and I’m Dying Up Here.
Along with Logan and Aguilar, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels sees executive producers on board in Oscar winner Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road) on behalf of Neal Street Productions. Logan is onboard via his Desert Wolf Productions. James Bagley is also on board,...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 9
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 9, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” is, for the most part, a celebration, but not because of any anti-fascist resistance or solved crime. Last week’s cat and mouse game didn’t catch itself a canary. Tonight’s episode opens where last week’s left off. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) are licking their wounds after a machine gun ambush sidetracked their takedown. Michener is most pissed about the loss of his classic V-12 car and he’s running on all pistons.
The standoff between Michener and Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann) is a joy to behold. There are so many layers to it, beyond the enormously satisfying dialogue. Michener’s a Jew in a restricted club, which has to be fun for Lane to play going in.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 8
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 8, “Hide and Seek,” begins a new cat and mouse game. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) cleared the police docket by pinning a series of murders on one suspect, Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) and were given a week’s paid leave as a thank you. But the two cops are having a devil of a time filling their idle hours.
Last week’s episode, “Maria and the Beast,” ended with a change of plans. Lewis called in his favor and enlisted Tiago in his understaffed and unfunded war against Nazis in Los Angeles. But the takedown became a stakeout when the two cops saw other major players sitting down to dinner with the first wave of the Third Reich, Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann). Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 7
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 7, “Maria and the Beast,” brings into focus the question we’ve all been asking since the series began: Why is the Vega family being picked on so badly? Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo ) left her mark on Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) when he was a young boy and lost his father, and she hasn’t let up since then.
The Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) confession is big time news. They’re calling him a mad dog killer and Detective Tiago Vega’s local bartender says he should get a medal for the arrest. But, it doesn’t look like he gave Tiago a free drink. At least he can get a free shave from Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé). That’s what she does for the homeless who come into her soup kitchen.

“I love her! I love her story,” exclaims Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza of her character Maria Vega, “I just hope everyone understands her and learns to love her as much as I do.” Maria is a central figure in Showtime’s new series “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” and Barraza had a fantastic time inhabiting this fiercely protective mother figure. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Barraza was instantly drawn to the series because it featured a Mexican-American family at its heart. “That is not something you frequently see,” admits the actress. Her excitement grew further after an initial discussion with series creator John Logan, which left her impressed. “I was pleased to see how John Logan knew the Mexican way of thinking,” she says. That included depictions of Mexican folklore and traditions that were essential for both the 1938 Los Angeles setting, and the folk religion that features heavily in the plot.

“There’s a turmoil that lives inside him,” says Daniel Zovatto of his character Tiago Vega on Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.” This spiritual successor to the original “Penny Dreadful” series brings its focus to Los Angeles of 1938. The following contains light spoilers for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 1.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels debuted on Showtime to add a fully new chapter to the dark mysteries of short stories for pulpy paper. It is called a spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful series which brought classic literary figures like Dracula and Dorian Gray to life in Victorian London. The first incarnation was set when the Society for Psychical Research looked for truths among the shadows while The Theosophical Society brought lost wisdom to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
The new series opens with its patron, Santa Muerte, played by Lorenza Izzo, as she carries the souls of the newly dead to whatever comes next. She has no tears, she says, but also no judgment. She saved the life, but left her mark on the main protagonist, Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto). Natalie Dormer plays Santa Muerte’s sister Magda.

It’s in the prologue of Sunday’s premiere of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels that shapeshifting demon Magda (Natalie Dorman) asks what could pass for a rhetorical question: “Are you ready?” Of course we are. From the moment it was announced, we’ve been ready to dive into John Logan’s “spiritual descendant” of his sublime original Showtime series. But could City of Angels possibly live up to the promise of its bloodline? Would we be drawn in as quickly and deeply by Magda, her accomplices and opponents, as we were Vanessa Ives and the Creature? After you’ve checked out TVLine’s review,...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 1
“There will come a time when the world is ready for me, when nation will battle nation, when race will devour race, when brother will kill brother until not a soul is left. Are you ready?” we are asked at the very beginning of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premiere episode, “Santa Muerte.” And we are. It’s only been four years since Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives put a stake in the heart of her most gothic of nemeses, Count Dracula, and Dr. Frankenstein’s creature set out to chill in the arctic. The new incarnation opens in the bright heat of sunshine.
As if there wasn’t enough brightness, the first supernatural entity we encounter is dressed in white with a bright golden headpiece, and the title character of the episode. Santa...

Billed as "a spiritual descendent" of the original Penny Dreadful series which ran from 2014-2016, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Season 1 Episode 1 introduces a supernatural pantheon of beings in a hauntingly familiar context, pre-wwii America.
This being the series premiere -- and me being a huge fan of the original series -- it's hard not to spend a lot of time comparing the two.
Like its predecessor, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels boasts an impressive cast, lush cinematography, and an ambitious narrative.
However, where the original played on the well-known characters of classic gothic and horror literature -- Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, the Wolf-Man -- this new incarnation is building somethng novel and more complex around the figure of Santa Muerte, the Angel of Holy Death.
Tiago: Santa Muerte is the Angel of Holy Death. She's the one who brings dead people to Heaven.
Lewis: Oh, she's the one who does that.

In “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” John Logan’s followup series to his previous three-season “Penny Dreadful” drama at Showtime, Natalie Dormer stars as Magda, a shape-shifting demon intent on sowing chaos wherever she goes. The backdrop is 1938 Los Angeles, an era rife with racial tension — the perfect opportunity for a hell goddess to start a race war.
“I think the mythology behind it was, to me, as she says in the first episode, ‘All mankind needs to be the monster he truly is, is being told that he can,” Dormer tells Variety. “She basically believes that mankind is inherently bad — that they will choose the baser, more selfish, more egocentric route whenever given a fork in the road.”
Magda manifests as three different human characters in the series, each with distinct looks and accents: There’s Elsa, a blonde blue-eyed immigrant from Germany with an abusive husband; Rio, a...

The cult hit series “Penny Dreadful” ran for three seasons on Showtime telling horror stories featuring Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll and more in an otherworldly London during the Victorian era. Now comes its followup, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” which isn’t connected to the original story but is also the brainchild of creator John Logan. It premieres on April 26. So does it capture the same magic (sometimes literally) as the previous series?

Los Angeles — with its rapid and untrammeled expansion, its low-hanging sun, and its status as the factory where our collective dreams, and nightmares, are born — provides unusually fertile territory for horror. And “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” a spinoff on a previous Showtime series set in Victorian London, capitalizes, minting an engaging and finely-tuned story set in Hollywood in 1938, its so-called Golden Age. The presence of the supernatural, bleeding into the lives of the hapless mortal Angelenos we meet, feels from the start fairly natural — what’s Hollywood if not haunted?

It would be wholly understandable if fans of Showtime’s original Penny Dreadful approached its “spiritual descendant” City of Angels with as much trepidation as excitement. How, we might wonder, could any offspring of John Logan’s beloved monster mash live up to the awful beauty of its parent? How could any new characters compare to the likes of Miss Vanessa Ives and the Creature? How could the Los Angeles of 1938 cast enough shadows to frighten us the way that the London of 1891 did? Well… ?

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels takes place half a century after the original series. Penny Dreadful was set in London during the age of gothic romance, the late 1800s. The original featured an immortal art lover, Frankenstein’s creature and a werewolf. Now we have city planners, plainclothes detectives and smiling fascists. You would think that a supernatural series involving mediums, one set in the 19th century and the other in 1938, would be cosmically connected. But Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, won’t have any callbacks, Easter Eggs or direct connections to the original 2014-2016 series. That show starred Eva Green as medium Vanessa Ives as she teamed with Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.
“As fond as I am about that series, that was a complete novel. It closed at the end, appropriately with that story, that poetic sad story we were telling,” says Penny Dreadful franchise creator/Ep and writer John Logan about the mother show.
City of Angels is set in 1938, and while there will be black magic and the macabre, with Game of Thrones alum Natalie Dormer as Magda, a supernatural demon who can take...
