A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

Stellar Blade is currently one of the most hyped games that are releasing for PlayStation 5. Fans everywhere are pretty hyped for this hack-and-slash action game. Like any game out there, this one has its own selling point too. For one, this game has some very beautiful visuals. Secondly, its combat mechanics are as fun as they can get, and lastly, there’s the conversation about its protagonist, Eve.
Eve is popular mainly for her looks; fans all over the internet agree that she looks exceptional. But there are others who suggest that a character looking like Eve should not be the main focus of a game. While this debate goes on, there’s a third group that suggests that there’s another character who looks much better than Eve.

Plot: An 11-year-old boy with an active imagination confronts his fears when a giant, smiling creature of the night, Dark, invites him on a transformative journey through the hours of darkness.
Review: During a time when mental health awareness in young people is more important than ever, we must address the fragility of the mind in as many arenas as possible. Most children don’t respond well to an adult who isn’t their parent telling them what to do. You must circumvent the awkward exchange and introduce them to something unique to get through to them. One way to do this is through the power of storytelling. The right story can create a sense of comfort, regardless of how far-fetched the plot or characters appear. As DreamWorks Animation shifts to a new production-sharing model with Sony Pictures Imageworks (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), we get a taste of the studio’s indie vibe at its best with “Orion and the Dark” (co-produced with Netflix and currently streaming). It’s an imaginative fantasy-adventure about confronting adolescent fears, thanks to the mind-bending script by Charlie Kaufman (“Anomalisa“).
“I think Kaufman’s whimsy and humor are brilliant for this family film space,” producer Peter McCown told IndieWire. “I think it’s a great match and I hope that he continues in this space.”
Kaufman spent about a year adapting Emma Yarlett’s 2014 children’s picture book about a fear-conquering adventure involving the titular adolescent and Dark, his nemesis, setting it in ’90s Philadelphia and making Orion (Jacob Tremblay) a neurotic, artistic fifth grader and Dark (Paul Walker Hauser) a hulking, insecure figure with an existential crisis. DreamWorks Animation’s latest feature, “Orion and the Dark,” is all but guaranteed to surprise you. It’s skipping theaters and going straight to Netflix, for starters. On a story level, it reveals the little-known fact that every time humans fall asleep, they’re being bludgeoned or smothered into unconsciousness by a little blue gremlin. But the biggest shock may be the name that appears on the screenplay.
An adult-friendly kids movie about dealing with your anxieties — first and foremost, fear of the dark — the computer-animated feature was written by Charlie Kaufman, the intellect behind “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Adaptation.” The project is itself a miles-outside-the-box adaptation of an inventive and fairly straightforward picture book by Emma Yarlett, which Kaufman complicates as only a galaxy brain like his can.

The Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich screenwriter has adapted a picture book for his debut family film about being afraid of the dark
A mainstream children’s movie from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, creator of Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York? It has to be worth a look, if only for the pleasure of wondering how much of his own adult neurosis has crept in. For this DreamWorks/Netflix family animation, Kaufman has adapted a picture book by Falmouth-based British author Emma Yarlett, and Sean Charmatz makes his feature directing debut, having worked chiefly on storyboarding films such as SpongeBob SquarePants and The Lego Movie 2.
It is about an unhappy little kid called Orion (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), who is afraid of pretty much everything: putting his hand up in class, being bullied, causing the toilet to overflow with an immoderate bowel movement, talking to the girl he...

The best animated movies are entertaining enough for kids while providing rewarding diversions for older viewers. This Netflix premiere from DreamWorks Animation hits just that sweet spot. Hilariously and movingly tapping into typical childhood anxieties, it’s infused with ample wit of both the visual and verbal variety for adults, the latter courtesy of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) in his return to feature-length animation, nine years after Anomalisa. Much like the streamer’s recent Nimona, Orion and the Dark proves the sort of sophisticated animated project that outshines many recent big-screen toons.
Based on the illustrated children’s book by Emma Yarlett, the story revolves around Orion (Jacob Tremblay, Room), a fifth-grader with an inordinate number of fears that he dutifully chronicles in a vividly illustrated sketchbook.
Many of them are typical for an early adolescent, from being afraid to talk to a classmate...

Charlie Kaufman‘s work normally provides for some very dynamic and interesting visuals. However, he has only dipped his toe into an animated feature film only once before with the stop-motion animated movie Anomalisa. Now, the writer of such films as Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind looks to be trying his hand at a traditional family-friendly animated comedy with Orion and the Dark. Sean Charmatz is in the director’s chair. Netflix has just released the trailer.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“Orion seems a lot like your average elementary school kid –– shy, unassuming, harboring a secret crush. But underneath his seemingly normal exterior, Orion is a ball of adolescent anxiety, completely consumed by irrational fears of bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, murderous gutter clowns, even falling off a cliff. But of all his fears, the thing he’s the most afraid...

With Peacock’s Twisted Metal adaptation getting the green light for a second season, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith and team dropped a few tidbits during an interview with NBC Insider on what to expect for season 2. That includes not only the focus on the tournament itself, but also the appearance of several more fan favorites from the video game series.
“I’m really excited,” says Smith. “We have an amazing team of writers and we’re discussing the arc of the season and what the first episode might be, looking at the big picture.” Among the characters the team is looking to introduce in the show, tournament organizer Calypso will finally be making an appearance, along with Dollface (who in Peacock’s adaptation is John Doe’s long-lost sister), Mr. Grimm, and perhaps the most challenging for the showrunners, Axel.

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. Now season 2 is moving full steam ahead, and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (who also happens to be a writer on Cobra Kai) has given Syfy Wire an update, saying the writers room has been assembled for season 2 and he feels they’re going to deliver something wild.
Smith is excited to be working with characters like Dollface, Mr. Grimm, and Axel, although working a couple of those into the grounded world established in the first season presents a challenge. If you went back in time to the year 2000 and told me that in 2023, one of my favorite new TV shows would be based on the "Twisted Metal" video games, I would have screamed at the top of my lungs, because time travel isn't real. But also, I would not have believed you, because the people in my life at that time who were most passionate about "Twisted Metal" were the human embodiment of a WWF promotional T-shirt that wished to be a real boy and that one scrawny goth kid in every grade that could randomly kick everyone's ass at the flexed arm hang in gym glass. And yet, the Peacock series is a total blast, and anyone smart enough to actually sit back and watch it will likely say the same. Unless they hate buff clowns driving ice cream trucks full of explosives or something.

Peacock has renewed its action-comedy series Twisted Metal — and no, we’re not clowning around.
Series star and executive producer Anthony Mackie revealed the news Thursday night during The Game Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Twisted Metal is nominated for Best Adaptation.
The half-hour live-action TV series based on the classic PlayStation game series is described as a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith.
Season 1 follows a motor-mouthed outsider (Mackie) offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. George Harrison was the youngest Beatle and, according to an audio engineer, the least fun to be around. Geoff Emerick, who worked with the band on several albums, had a hard time understanding Harrison. While he empathized with the struggle he faced in the band, Emerick wasn’t the guitarist’s biggest fan. He believed he was a bit too snide.
George Harrison was a mystery to a Beatles audio engineer
In his time with The Beatles, Emerick was the friendliest with Paul McCartney, but he liked John Lennon and Ringo Starr as well. The same could not be said about Harrison.
“George Harrison was always kind of a mystery to me,” Emerick wrote in the book Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles. “Although he was kind and generous with many of my Emi colleagues throughout the years, he and I just didn’t have good chemistry together.

Video games have the ability to transport players to interactive worlds beyond their wildest imagination, defeat bosses to become the hero they wish they could be in real life, and step inside an identity that they wouldn't otherwise understand. Or, in the case of a game like "Twisted Metal," drive an armored ice cream truck and blow up enemies with a remote-controlled rocket launcher. The vehicular combat video game was the lifeblood of the Dorito-dusted finger lickers of America in the late '90s and early 00s, and while there is a story players can follow ... most people opt to obliterate their pals with nuclear weapons. Yet, somehow, Peacock adapted the game into one of the most entertaining new series of the year.

After a concerning lead-up to the show’s release, Sony‘s Twisted Metal is doing donuts around audience expectations! It’s one thing to step into the ring with Samoa Joe, but to confront him while he’s dressed as a clown in an ice cream truck? No thanks. Apparently, that’s pretty much how a lot of his Twisted Metal co-stars felt, as Samoa Joe has said the sheer look of Sweet Tooth put the fear right into them.
Speaking with Cbr, Samoa Joe said he eased into Sweet Tooth due to the get-up but was also helped quite a bit by those on the set of Twisted Metal. “To be quite honest, it was very easy. I mean, anytime you put on a clown mask, a leather tactical bondage harness, and polka dot pants, it has a way of thrusting you into the role whether you like it or not. People are gonna treat you a certain way, you’re gonna get looked at differently immediately — and...

Quiet in Twisted Metal is undoubtedly a character that many short-tempered people might find relatable. Her fiery and unpredictable nature adds a unique spark to the series, creating a rollercoaster of emotions that keeps viewers hooked. While she possesses a sharp mind and cunning intellect, her emotions often get the better of her, leading her to act on impulse without fully considering the consequences. This unbridled rage becomes her Achilles’ heel, blurring the lines between right and wrong as she charges headfirst into chaotic situations.

Anthony Mackie spent the better part of his childhood playing Twisted Metal on the Playstation. Now, he’s the face of Peacock’s adaptation, which debuted Thursday — nearly two decades after the first version of the game.
Fans of Twisted Metal will know that the vehicular combat games don’t exactly tell a story. “It was just a bunch of people, a bunch of cars, who do you want to fight?” as the Marvel actor put it.
“So with the series, we were able to make that backstory and create that background to where now you’re invested in these characters. And when you go back and play the game, now you have a completely different relationship with those characters who are in the game,” he told Deadline during a recent interview.

Peacock’s Twisted Metal manages to make its 10 half-hour episodes feel much longer than they actually are. Only by the finale does the series arrive at the premise for the classic PlayStation games that it adapts: a bloodsport fought in vehicles, with all manner of cars and trucks mounted with missile launchers and automatic weapons. Up to that point, the show reimagines the world of the games as a post-apocalyptic road trip centered on a delivery driver, John Doe (Anthony Mackie), with a “Got milk?” bumper sticker on his truck.
Mackie’s motormouthed amnesiac agrees to make a dangerous cross-country run in exchange for a place within the walled city of New San Francisco. Along the way, John encounters the requisite variety of deranged characters and factions. For actress Stephanie Beatriz, originating a new character for Peacock’s live-action adaptation of the PlayStation video game “Twisted Metal” — one who doesn’t utter a word in the series premiere — presented a unique and irresistible challenge.
“I love original storytelling,” she told TheWrap. “I think that’s what drew me to these scripts because my character is not even in the games. It’s a fully new character, fully new backstory, fully new world.
“The world opens up more and more every episode,” she added. “It’s in a way limitless.”
Beatriz plays Quiet, a badass axe-wielding car thief that acts purely on instinct. She comes from a community that oppressed her into silence and goes on to form an unlikely, antagonistic bond with John Doe (Anthony Mackie) as she becomes clouded by her need for revenge.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for all of Twisted Metal Season 1.] Peacock‘s new action comedy Twisted Metal features a Brooklyn Nine-Nine reunion, with Jason Mantzoukas appearing in an episode which stars Stephanie Beatriz. In Episode 8, John Doe’s (Anthony Mackie) car is stolen, leading to him and Quiet (Beatriz) encountering Preacher (Mantzoukas) and his group of Holy Men. Preacher is, to put it mildly, an unhinged character. “My God, that was so amazing. As soon as I read that character, I thought, who would be perfect for this? Jason,” Beatriz told TV Insider. “That character is unhinged in the best way. In my mind, it was always Jason, so I’m so glad that we were lucky enough to get him, because I think he brought an element to it that is just so absolutely Jason. He had the crew rolling. Anthony Mackie was eager to enter the demolition derby-style world of “Twisted Metal.”
The Marvel actor — who stars as John Doe, an amnesiac driver transporting goods across a war-torn nation — told TheWrap that he and his team were looking for a “different type of energy” than his previous projects when he signed onto the PlayStation video game adaptation for Peacock.
“It was actually about me just being able to show a different side of myself. This business can bog you down and you lose that lighthearted side of yourself if that’s what you’re pigeonholed into,” he explained. “So my team and I would look for something that was more comedic, something that I could just run around and have fun with.”
Mackie said he played plenty of PlayStation while growing up in New Orleans. One of his first video games was “Twisted Metal.

For the longest time, adapting video games into movies or television was an all but guaranteed disaster; films like "Postal," "Rampage," "Doom," and "Max Payne" were all met with widespread derision. But 2023 has provided a major turning point: Thanks to the enormous box-office success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and the massive acclaim for the HBO series "The Last of Us," video games are finally being looked at as a source for great stories.
That brings us to Peacock's "Twisted Metal." I've been playing video games my whole life, and if you were to ask me what games would make a great television series, "Twisted Metal" would be at the bottom of my list -- if it even appeared at all. That's not because they're bad games mind you, but they are significantly lacking any significant story. There's a pretense of one, but it's a franchise all about driving...

With its rave reviews, three-month window of cultural supremacy and 24 Emmy nominations, HBO’s The Last of Us gave all subsequent game-to-screen translations an exhilarating new freedom. It’s no longer necessary for an adaptation to bear the weight of an entire genre’s credibility. “Greatness” has been achieved and it’s now fully acceptable for a video game adaptation to simply be “decent.”
Huzzah!
Peacock’s new series based on the venerable and versatile Twisted Metal franchise is — and I mean this generally as a compliment — quite decent. Both as colorful and as deep as a shimmering oil slick on a sweltering stretch of abandoned blacktop, Twisted Metal lacks the budget and ingenuity to consistently live up to the game’s sense of unrelenting mayhem. But its limitations make room for a solid character-based story to develop around stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz.

Five minutes into Peacock’s new horror comedy series “Twisted Metal,” it’s evident that the main character of John Doe – an amnesiac driver transporting goods across a war-torn nation – was written more as a vehicle for Anthony Mackie than for the gamers that sustained the original Sony Playstation franchise that inspired it.
Originally a wildly popular 1995 vehicular combat battle game, “Twisted Metal” has had over ten iterations and is the longest-running original title on the platform. The Peacock series is a live-action comedic adaptation created by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (“Cobra Kai”).
Those looking for a faithful video game adaptation should hold their applause until the end. Unlike recent shows like “The Last of Us” or “Halo,” the source material for this show is too convoluted to be adapted directly. However, those looking for sequences of vehicular-related carnage should be pleased.

John Doe (Anthony Mackie) is hoping for a better life, but that’s much easier said than done, as you can see in the trailer for Twisted Metal (dropping on Peacock on July 27). “Twenty years ago, the world fell to s**t. But there are humble motherf**kers like me delivering cargo from one walled city to another,” John explains. “And that’s where the cars and guns come in.” Raven (Neve Campbell), in New San Francisco, hires John. “Pick up a package, bring it back. The "Twisted Metal" video game series doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would work as a live-action TV show, but the folks over at Peacock gave it a shot and the first teaser trailer is here and ... it actually doesn't look bad! In fact, it looks like they're leaning hard into the nostalgia aspect of things, with a focus on the turn of the millennium. That's kind of genius, really, as the game series was at its peak around that era, with "Twisted Metal 4" releasing in 1999 and the seminal "Twisted Metal Black" releasing in 2001, giving an entire generation of kids and teens a love for the rowdy road-rage of these combat car games. I remember playing "Twisted Metal 4" in my friend's basement after school, banging our heads to the heavy metal soundtrack and laughing at the ridiculous characters, and somehow this trailer has captured that exact energy.
