An Instagram post falsely claiming that controversial 14-year-old rapper and influencer Lil Tay had died last week was the work of a hacker, Meta confirms to TMZ.
Five years after becoming a viral sensation, Tay recently found herself back in the headlines when a heartfelt announcement of her untimely death was posted to her Instagram page, and then, the next day, when she resurfaced with a statement via her family to TMZ, claiming her account had been hacked and she was alive and well.
“I want to make it clear that my brother and I are safe and alive, but I’m completely heartbroken, and struggling to even find the right words to say,” the statement read. “It’s been a very traumatizing 24 hours. All day yesterday, I was bombarded with endless heartbreaking and tearful phone calls from loved ones all while trying to sort out this mess.”

Lil Tay’s former manager is calling for “cautious consideration” in the wake of the rapper’s family announcing her sudden death on her Instagram account.
In a statement to Et, Harry Tsang said, “given the complexities of the current circumstances, I am at a point where I cannot definitively confirm or dismiss the legitimacy of the statement issued by the family.” He added, “This situation calls for cautious consideration and respect for the sensitivities involved.”
Tsang’s statement comes after Lil Tay’s father, Christopher Hope, told Business Insider he could not comment on the family’s Instagram post. He also declined to answer whether Lil Tay — real name Claire Hope — was still alive.
“I am writing to keep you informed about the evolving situation related to the reported passing of Liltay. I, Harry Tsang, her last-known manager, feel it is important to provide you with the most accurate and timely information possible,...

Three men were found guilty of the 2018 murder of South Florida rapper XXXTentacion (born Jahseh Onfroy) on Monday, March 20th, following a month-long trial at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Michael Boatwright, 28, Dedrick Williams, 26, and Trayvon Newsome, 24, were all found guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery (via AP News) after the jury deliberated just over seven days. They will receive mandatory life sentences at a future date.
During the trial, prosecutors placed the men at the June 2018 shooting using surveillance footage taken inside and outside of Riva Motorsports. They also built their case around cellphone videos of them showing off stacks of $100 bills they allegedly stole.

Three men have been found guilty of the 2018 murder of rapper XXXTentacion who was shot in broad daylight in South Florida while being robbed of $50,000.
Michael Boatwright, 28, Dedrick Williams, 26, and Trayvon Newsome, 24, were all found guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery by a jury after seven days of deliberation.
They will receive mandatory life sentences at a later date; prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, which is still technically in operation in Florida, in the case.
During the monthlong trial, prosecutors linked the men to the June 18, 2018, shooting outside Riva Motorsports in suburban Fort Lauderdale through extensive surveillance video taken inside and outside the store, plus cellphone videos they took that showed them flashing fistfuls of $100 bills hours after the slaying.
Prosecutors also had the testimony of a fourth man, Robert Allen, a former friend of the defendants who said he participated in the robbery. He pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder.

A Broward County judge ruled Friday that rapper Drake, born Ashley Graham, will not be deposed by defense attorneys in the XXXTentacion murder trial due to lack of evidence of his involvement in the 2018 killing, per NBC Miami.
The judge’s decision comes several days after a defense attorney claimed process servers were rebuffed by armed guards at the rapper’s Beverly Hills mansion last week. On Monday, Drake’s lawyer Bradford Cohen had asked the court to strike an order to require Drake to sit for a deposition.

The first week alone featured a fair share of court drama, driven primarily by the testimony of Robert Allen — one of the four suspects who entered a guilty plea last August — as well as one defense attorney’s efforts to drag Drake into the proceedings. The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks, wrapping up in March.

But Mauricio Padilla, the attorney for defendant Dedrick Williams, has implicated Toronto artist Drake as a possible culprit, citing lyrics and a 2018 post on XXXTentacion’s Ig story, which stated, “if anyone kills me it was @champagnepapi…I’m snitching.” XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Onfroy, later deleted the story and said he was hacked, but...

We live in a seemingly never-ending age of music documentaries. In the last decade, everyone from Billie Eilish to Linda Ronstadt to A Band Called Death has had their story chronicled on film. This year alone has seen pictures about David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, Sinéad O'Connor, Olivia Rodrigo, Dio, Sheryl Crow, XXXTentacion, Tanya Tucker, Nick Cave, and the New York City music scene of the early 2000s. I wouldn't be surprised if there are films I'm forgetting there. Frank Marshall and Ryan Suffern, the co-directors of "Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story," have even made documentaries about The Bee Gees and the collaboration between Carole King and James Taylor, both of which have been released within the last two years. Music documentaries are inescapable.
What makes this overwhelming saturation even more depressing is how uninterested these films are at digging deep into their subjects. Most of the films...

“What young people want from pop culture isn’t what old people want from pop culture,” New York Times pop music critic Jon Caramanica observes in Justin Staple’s documentary “American Rapstar.” The film charts the rise of a generation of lo-fi rappers buoyed by the advent of online streaming platform SoundCloud, founded in 2007. Smokepurpp, Lil Xan, and Bhad Bhabie are among the (living) talking heads, while deceased rappers XXXTentacion and Lil Pump also get a spotlight as the feature dives into the substance-abuse epidemic plaguing the scene — from popping Xanax to the more serious, very often fatal fentanyl. Director Staple’s film introduces a lot of big ideas, mostly successfully, from indicting Big Pharma for encouraging pill addiction to the generational divide between the hip-hop artists who came of age in the early 1990s to today’s primarily internet-driven base. While a straightforward documentary in the classic sense, it...

The gunman who killed rapper PnB Rock in Los Angeles during a robbery may have been led to the location by an Instagram post, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said Tuesday (13 September).
Moore said the attack occurred shortly after the rapper was tagged online as being at the Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles in South Los Angeles. Police are investigating whether that prompted the attack.
The 30-year-old Philadelphia rapper – real name Rakim Allen – was at the restaurant with his girlfriend on Monday (12 September), who posted a location-tagged photo in a since-deleted post on Instagram.

"What young people want from pop culture is not what old people want from pop culture…" Utopia has revealed a trailer for a music documentary titled American Rapstar, which originally premiered back in 2020 at a few major documentary festivals. It's finally opening on VOD in October. A new scene of troubled, lo-fi young rappers have emerged from utilizing the SoundCloud streaming platform to quickly become the most culturally disruptive force in hip hop, shocking the world with their rambunctious antics, prescription drug use, facial tattoos, and tons of rebellious punk energy. Justin Staple's new doc American Rapstar tells the story of how these artists, including Smokepurpp, Lil Xan, XXXTentacion, Lil Peep and Bhad Bhabie, have unsettled the music industry, tested pop culture boundaries and paved their own unique roads. On one hand, these artists seem over-the-top ridiculous. On the other hand, this looks like an honest doc that digs...

XXXTentacion, who became one of his generation’s biggest hip-hop stars before being murdered in a robbery at age 20, was candid about assuming the role of “villain” in his music, which he ascribed to a knack for marketing. Looking at his literal rap sheet, of course, it didn’t seem like just a persona. Known in real life as Jahseh Onfroy, the performer was awaiting trial on felony charges of home invasion and aggravated battery when he was arrested for imprisoning and brutally beating his girlfriend while she was apparently pregnant. So, with that as one of the most memorable parts of his legacy, it’s understandable if you’d want to take a pass on anything looking to “humanize” the late rapper, as does “Look at Me: XXXTentacion,” a documentary that premiered at SXSW this week (with a Hulu debut set for June 10).

April 16 was an auspicious day for DripReport’s “Skechers,” easily the most-streamed song in history about $40 light-up sneakers. The track, which blends keening vocals with a typical trap beat, seemingly earnest infatuation (“I just can’t stop thinking about her”) with leering pubescent come-ons (“I’ll buy you the purse, only if you show me your boobs”), finished its fifth week on top of Spotify’s Viral 50 chart in the U.S., passing a mark set by Lil Nas X’s runaway hit “Old Town Road.”

Roddy Ricch’s emerald-and-acorn-colored eyes keep darting to the door. Seated in an all-white dressing room in New York, the Southern California rapper, 21, has the distinct look on his face of someone who doesn’t trust anyone in his immediate vicinity. He’s a quiet, perceptive presence; there’s a low hum radiating off him at all times. A few months ago, when I spoke to him over the phone, he refused to reveal his government name. But this time, for some reason, a few weeks before the release of...

“I don’t want people to know me as a reggaeton star,” Maluma told Rolling Stone last year. “I want them to know me as Maluma, the star.”
With the 2018 release of his Latin Grammy-winning album, F.A.M.E. — as well as charting hits with Shakira, and the late, controversy-ridden rapper XXXTentacion — the Colombian singer-songwriter seemed primed for global crossover stardom. But despite the success of lead single “Felices Los 4,” plus radio-ready cameos from Timbaland, Prince Royce and Jason Derulo, F.A.M.E. didn’t quite realize Maluma’s American dream.

Logic is more than a rapper — at least, that’s how he sees himself. This much became apparent on Tuesday, when he A) released Supermarket, his debut novel, which tells the story of a depressed 24-year-old deadbeat named Flynn who takes a job at a grocery store in his rural Oregon town, and B) released Supermarket (Soundtrack), the novel’s 13-track musical companion, which finds him diving headlong into the world of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock. The album begins inauspiciously, with a seven-minute stoner odyssey titled “Bohemian Trapsody.” [Find the book on co0319272 autoAmazon...
