Unlike Cannes’ industry-catered competition section, the festival’s independent sidebar Directors’ Fortnight defines itself around audience outreach.
Headquartered halfway down the Croisette, equidistant from the Palais des Festivals, where the official selection screens for an industry-only crowd, Fortnight embraces the sprawl. The 56th edition programs 21 features and another eight shorts from May 15-25 (starting with Sophie Fillières’ posthumous “This Life of Mine”) while bringing select titles to many theaters far from the main drag.
That same selection will also offer the easiest point of access for so many locals, for whom Fortnight is often synonymous with Cannes, and who can always count on a 30-minute Q&a after each screening. Further afield, however, that clarity of identity begins to fade.
For one thing, the showcase doesn’t have a recognizable pitchman. In the time since Thierry Frémaux took over the official selection in 2004, Directors’ Fortnight has seen four artistic directors come and go,...

In their inaugural edition and first mandate, Artistic Director Julien Rejl oversaw a significant transformation of the Directors’ Fortnight, not only altering its name but also reshaping its curation philosophy. The programming team embraced films that were not submitted to the other sections along the Croisette. Whether this approach persists remains uncertain, it adds an element of unpredictability to this section. We’ve so far learned of the visual identity of the festival was designed by Takeshi Kitano and just today, the section will have its first-ever public award in the Le Choix du Public de la Quinzaine. As the second-year edition is about to be unveiled, we figure that there are several former participants of the Quinzaine hold hopes of securing a second chance, third or sixth chance at cracking this line-up — that possibility remains uncertain.…...

Updated with festival response: Spanish director Victor Erice, who was absent from the Cannes Film Festival premiere of his film Close Your Eyes, has posted an open letter criticizing festival Delegate General Thierry Frémaux over his handling of the selection of his film and explaining his decision not to attend.
Revolving around an investigation into the disappearance of an actor during a film shoot, Close Your Eyes is Erice’s first feature in three decades.
The film premiered to strong reviews on May 22 in the Cannes Premiere sidebar, created in 2021 to welcome films from more established filmmakers, with key cast Helena Miquel, Jose Coronado, Ana Torrent, Manolo Solo and María León in attendance but without Erice.
In an open letter posted on the website of Spain’s El Pais newspaper on Thursday, Erice said he had submitted the film to Official Selection as well as the Cannes parallel section of Directors’ Fortnight.

US filmmaker Tarantino will present a secret screening on Thursday, May 25, and will give a talk in which he will ‘discuss his counter-history of cinema’.
Tarantino recently published a critical essay on the New Hollywood generation of filmmakers of the 1970s. The Directors’ Fortnight section itself began shortly before this era in 1969.

Quentin Tarantino will attend Cannes Directors’ Fortnight as a guest of honor on May 25 for a special event consisting of a secret screening and a discussion on his counter-history of cinema, the parallel sidebar has announced.
The discussion will spin off Tarantino’s recent book Cinema Speculation, which was published last November, and explores key American films of the 1970s.
“In 1969, in Cannes, the Directors’ Fortnight was born, a counter-programming of free-spirited films from all over the world. In 1969, in California, a new generation of filmmakers rose against old Hollywood,” the Cannes parallel sidebar said in a statement.
“Of this, Quentin Tarantino has recently published a captivating analysis in a critical essay on 1970s cinema. As an exceptional and generous cinephile, Tarantino is at home at the Fortnight. He will be our guest this year to present a secret screening and discuss his counter-history of cinema. A rockabilly vibe on closing day.

Quentin Tarantino to Attend Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight for ‘Secret Screening’ and Honorary Tribute
Quentin Tarantino has been named honorary guest at the upcoming edition of Directors’ Fortnight, the selection running alongside the Cannes Film Festival. The tribute will take place on May 25, on the closing of Directors Fortnight.
“As an exceptional and generous cinephile, Tarantino is at home at the Fortnight. He will be our guest this year to present a secret screening and discuss his counter-history of cinema,” said Directors’ Fortnight in a statement. Tarantino was recently in Paris to promote his first non-fiction book, “Cinema Speculation,” which tells his coming-of-age as a director through a look at iconic American films from the 1970s era.
Organizers pointed out that Directors’ Fortnight was created in 1969, following widespread civic unrest, as a “counter-programming of free-spirited films from all over the world.” At the same in California, “a new generation of filmmakers rose against old Hollywood,” which Tarantino was part of.

Incoming Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Delegate General Julien Rejl has unveiled his inaugural line-up for the 55th edition of the parallel sidebar, running May 17 to 26.
Judging by his first selection, Rejl, who worked as a producer, distributor and sales agent at French film company Capricci for a decade before taking up his new role, seems intent on shaking things up.
He and his selection team have delivered a line-up featuring a raft of under-the-radar titles alongside confirmed directors and a handful of buzzed-about rising newcomers. See the full selection here
Deadline talked to Rejl about the line-up and his uncompromising vision for the Cannes parallel section.
Deadline: Congratulations on your inaugural selection. How did you find the process of pulling it together?
Julien Rejl: It was a fascinating marathon. We received even more films than in previous years. This shows the vivacity of contemporary cinema creation but it also makes our work even harder.

Quinzaine des Cinéastes Artistic Director Julien Rejl broke bread this morning with a camera shy live tweet of the line-up. We count nineteen features (for now), a handful of shorts and Special Screening status going to Manoel de Oliveira’s Abraham’s Valley (1993). We would have fallen out of our chairs just with the opening and closing night selections. Cédric Kahn becomes film festival worthy once again with Le Procès Goldman as the opener. Best know in the early naughts for Roberto Succo (2001) and Red Lights (2004), Kahn currently has two new films in post with this project chronicling the trial of Goldman, a French left-wing revolutionary who was convicted of several robberies and was mysteriously murdered.…...

Cannes Directors’ Fortnight has announced the selection for its 55th edition, running May 17 to 26.
The once renegade Cannes parallel section – launched in 1969 and overseen ever since by the French Directors Guild (Société des Réalisateurs de Films) – will present 20 features and 10 shorts this year. Scroll down for the full list.
The selection is the inaugural line-up of incoming Delegate General Julien Rejl, who was announced as predecessor Paolo Moretti’s replacement last June.
This edition also marks the section’s first outing under the new French name of Quinzaine des Cinéastes.
The name change from Quinzaine des Réalisateurs was announced back in June as a move to make its French-language banner title more gender-inclusive. This year, seven of the 21 filmmakers in the 20-title feature selection are women.
Rejl and his new selection team have pulled together an eclectic line-up mixing confirmed directors, buzzed-about newcomers and a handful of off-the-radar titles.

New films from Hong Sang-soo and Michel Gondry will world premiere at Directors Fortnight, a selection running parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. This edition marks the first under the leadership of Julien Rejl as artistic director.
Succeeding to Paolo Moretti, Rejl was named by the governing body of Directors’ Fortnight, the Srf (Société des réalisateurs de films), as part of a rebranding. Unlike previous artistic directors for this selection, Rejl doesn’t come from the festival circuit. He was previously in charge of distribution, international co-productions and international sales at Capricci, an arthouse film banner based in Paris.
The well-balanced lineup shows his taste for international cinema, with a mix of emerging directors and established masters, such as Hong, who will present his movie “In Our Day” on closing night. The edition will kick off with “The Goldman’s Case,” a thriller directed by actor-turned-helmer Cedric Kahn about the true story of Pierre Goldman,...

The Director’s Fortnight didn’t simply give itself a new coat of paint but rather a heart transplant. Quinzaine des Réalisateurs is now a thing of the past and Quinzaine des cinéastes takes care of the gender pronoun issues. Artistic Director Paolo Moretti’s reign was cut short and the 55th edition will be piloted by Julien Rejl. We’re assuming that the section will keep in its subversive spirit, especially in a year where Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles took over the Best Film of all time number one spot in the recently published Sight & Sound but what types of films will be programmed is anyone’s guess.…...

Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, the section running alongside the Cannes Film Festival, has appointed Julien Rejl as artistic director. He will succeed to Paolo Moretti, who had his third and last edition this year.
Rejl was named by the Srf (Société des réalisateurs de films), the governing body of Directors’ Fortnight. When announcing the news of Moretti’s exit in February, the Srf said it wished “to rethink thoroughly Directors’ Fortnight, its name, its singularity, and its strategic and political role.”
While the international name of the section doesn’t seem to have changed, the Srf suggested that it was rebranding it in French as the “Quinzaine des Cinéastes” to reflect its wish to be “more inclusive and turned towards film and filmmakers in a decisive and firmly political way.”
The Srf said Rejl’s “sheer, communicative, structured and versatile passion is exactly what arthouse cinema will need in the coming years.

Cannes Directors’ Fortnight has appointed former arthouse sales agent Julien Rejl as its new delegate general and tweaked its French name in a move to usher in a new era of inclusivity for the 60-year-old parallel sidebar.
Rejl replaces outgoing Directors’ Fortnight head Paolo Moretti who took up the role in September 2018, succeeding Edouard Waintrop who oversaw the section from 2012-2018.
France’s Directors’ Guild, or Société des Réalisateurs de Films (Srf), the body which oversees the sidebar, said his appointment had been voted on during a general assembly on June 25.
“His absolute passion, which is communicative, constructive and pluralist is what arthouse filmmakers will need in the years to come,” it said in a statement.
It added that the organisation had also voted to change its French name to La Quinzaine des Cinéastes, from its previous name of La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the meeting.
