Adelaide teens take an occult party game too far in this terrific debut from Australian YouTube celebrities (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou. Inventive, creepy and confidently directed, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
After a deeply disturbing prologue, shot in an impressive single take, the film centres on Mia (Sophie Wilde), who’s grown more and more distant from her father (Marcus Johnson) since the traumatic loss of her mother, two years previously. Accordingly, Mia spends most of her time at her best friend Jade’s (Alexandra Jensen) house, which is slightly awkward, because Jade is dating Mia’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel (Otis Dhanji).

A24 is going all in on a new horror franchise as the studio is officially developing a sequel to this summer's sleeper hit "Talk to Me." Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the film hit theaters less than two weeks ago against rave reviews from the festival circuit earlier this year. Audiences responded kindly and the studio wasted zero time in giving the sequel the go-ahead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the follow-up is aptly titled "Talk 2 Me." Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman are set to pen the screenplay, while the Philippou brothers will once again return to the director's chair. Plot details remain under wraps at this time. The first movie focuses on a group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. They become hooked on the new thrill of it all until one of them goes too far and unleashes malicious supernatural forces.

Editors note: This review was originally published January 22 after the the movie’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It opens in theaters Friday.
Children shouldn’t play with dead things: not just the title of a low-budget American horror from 1972 but words to live by, especially in this unnerving and highly effective Midnight entry from Australia. But though it employs some familiar tropes — high-schoolers dabble in the occult and soon begin to wish they hadn’t — Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou’s film Talk to Me does attempt to do something new with an old idea, for one thing making the crossing of infernal thresholds seem like an awful lot of fun.
From the start, the most striking thing is that there’s not much in the way of a preamble and very little lip service to genre traditions. The Philippous are respectful enough of modern audiences to...

Director duo/brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s debut feature is a well-produced Australian, A24 possession horror with interesting, likeable characters, excellent performances and well woven scares. Sadly Talk to Me stumbles in the latter half due to drawn-out, superfluous scenes and wonky plotting.
On the anniversary of her mother’s death, twenty-something Mia (Sophie Wilde) attends a party with her friend Jade (Alexandra Jensen) and plays a game that involves grasping the embalmed hand of a dead psychic and asking it to talk to her. After conversing with a spirit conjured by the hand, the event leads to an accident involving Jade’s younger brother, Riley (Joe Bird). Loss and grief bring a lot of changes to one's life, more than it may initially appear. It's a personal, grim reminder of the final destination that awaits us all, a full-on wake-up call that it can and will happen to you. As much as a death by natural causes hangs over every human being, the specter of unnatural death looms even larger; not just for reasons of unfairness, but because it implies an additional amount of pain and suffering coming along with it.
Thus, it's a natural impulse for most people (and especially young people) to not so much confront their fears but to dismiss, belittle and mock them, in the hopes that they'll be sufficiently diminished. In YouTube stars Danny and Michael Philippou's debut feature, "Talk to Me," the world of the dead is treated as something to be laughed at,...

Chicago – True unforgettable scares in a horror film are few and far between, despite many attempts. The unsettling air of the new film “Talk to Me” is lingering, as created by two Australian brothers and YouTube sensations, Danny & Michael Philippou. Their channel RackaRacka gave them the opportunity to make their debut film.
Australian teens Mia (Sophie Wilde), brother/sister Riley (Joe Bird) and Jade (Alexandra Jensen) gather with other friends to participate in a bizarre “lights out” ritual. A plastered mummy hand is grasped by an individual as they intone “talk to me,” and when a spirit appears they entreat them to enter their bodies. Remarkably, it works differently for Mia, Jade and especially Riley, with unintended consequences. When the effects prove not to wear off, trouble from the inhabitants of the afterlife soon follow. The film was co-directed by Danny (also co-writer) and Michael Philippou in their feature film debut.

A24’s full trailer for Talk to Me confirms that if you’re ever offered a chance to touch a severed hand, don’t do it. Just say no to the hand, or else there’s a possibility you’ll lose control of your soul.
The R-rated horror film marks the directorial debut of popular YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou and stars Sophie Wilde, Miranda Otto, and Alexandra Jensen. Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Zoe Terakes, and Chris Alosi also star.
Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman wrote the screenplay, and Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton serve as producers.
The Philippou’s first feature film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won over critics. It currently sits at 97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with Screen Rant’s Mae Abdulbaki describing it as not “simply concerned with jump scares, and its horror settles deep into the bones, a disquiet that ultimately rattles the nerves.

"I let you in... I let you in..." A24 has debuted a second official trailer for the indie horror favorite Talk to Me, made by the Australian brothers known as "RackaRacka" on YouTube. It played to rave reviews at both the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals this year, after first premiering in Australia late last year. This is a much better trailer, setting up what should be one of the big horror hits of the year. When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new "thrill," until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. The film stars Sophie Wilde as Mia, Joe Bird as Riley, plus Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Marcus Johnson, Alexandria Steffensen, Zoe Terakes, and Chris Alosio. I'm a big fan of this one, and I'm waiting for it to open...

“Talk to Me” is the latest A24 horror movie, and a brand new trailer has arrived.
It will soon join a collection of blood-curdling modern-day classics like “Midsommar,” “The Witch” and “X.” And judging by the trailer (which you can watch above), it will fit in nicely. Or maybe it’ll fit in horribly? You know what we mean.
The movie follows a young girl (Sophie Wilde), who recently lost her mother, and is coaxed into playing a game with an embalmed hand that supposedly opens up a door to the other side. Of course, things quickly escalate out of control, unleashing a demonic force (demonic forces are never as amenable as you’d think). Is this the Australian version of Ouija? Or something else entirely? They’re a hearty bunch, we can see them looking for an even greater thrill, like shaking hands with the devil. Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen,...

Who would have thought that a small indie Australian film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival would become one of the year's most anticipated horror movies? We certainly didn't, but therein lies the beauty of "Talk to Me," A24's upcoming acquisition that has taken the horror community by storm. Danny and Michael Philippou's genre-bending debut finally has a trailer, and you're gonna want to be sitting down for it.
It can be difficult to combine classic horror tropes with modern sensibilities. However, the way that "Talk to Me" is approaching this combination seems to be pretty interesting. While social media and the "kids these days" mentality is present throughout, it seems to be only one part of a larger, terrifying tale. As we see in the trailer, teenager Mia (Sophie Wilde) is trying to move on from a tragedy thanks to her friends. Unfortunately, when a hot...

A24 is ready to scare you silly (again). “Talk to Me,” the latest horror sensation from the world’s hippest movie studio, is coming this summer. And the deliciously creepy first trailer is here. Watch it above (if you dare).
The movie follows a young girl (Sophie Wilde), who recently lost her mother, and is coaxed into playing a game with an embalmed hand that supposedly opens up a door to the other side. Of course, things quickly escalate out of control, with a demonic force being unleashed (because of course). Apparently Australian teenagers have never heard of your classic Ouija board, because this is some next-level supernatural tomfoolery. (Don’t kids today just do TikTok dances and eat Tide pods?) Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji and Zoe Terakes also star.

There’s a stabbing, a violent suicide and a disturbing accident involving kangaroo roadkill in the opening minutes of Talk to Me, and from there, the adrenaline rush of this nightmarish collision of the living and the dead rarely lets up. Having made a name for themselves with the online comic horror and action content of their RackaRacka YouTube channel, Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou vault into features with assurance and imagination, cooking up gut-wrenching thrills that deftly tap into their own background as viral-video sensations. Acquired out of Sundance by A24, the film is thematically a bit thin but doesn’t stint on genuine scares, intensity or revulsion.

In the first two minutes of Talk to Me from Danny and Michael Philippou, the directing duo completely knocked me on my ass, and then continued to propel me forward on this truly twisted journey for the next 90 minutes or so that kept me guessing about the things that I was seeing as well as where this story was headed. So, by the time Talk to Me was over, I felt like I had just run a marathon. But without a doubt, Talk to Me is probably one of the most exciting horror debuts to come along in some time, as the Philippou brothers do a great job of taking some tried and true tropes into the 21st century and turning them squarely on their heads, as well as crafting several grisly sequences that left me genuinely unsettled.

Featuring a great premise from which to build a franchise, YouTube creators Danny and Michael Philippou’s directorial debut Talk To Me is a refreshing retread, imagining tantalizing “micro-possessions” that get stronger the more you use them. The premise is simple enough: a possessed hand that seems to have been passed down for generations opens a supernatural portal to the unknown, which can offer a brief moment of clarity before it inflicts unthinkable violence. As far as the violence goes, the film checks all the boxes with a murder/suicide opening sequence at an out-of-control house party, setting the affair in motion without giving away what’s to come.

The horror genre has always found innovative ways to play with generational culture shifts, finding a way to keep its finger on the pulse of modern struggle. Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies aptly tapped into social commentary on Gen Z, bringing a dark sense of humor to its party game-based horror antics. Now, Danny and Michael Philippou concocted the next wild horror sensation with Talk to Me.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. A24 releases the film in theaters on Friday, July 28.
A bundle of taut nerves stretched to their vomit-inducing breaking point, “Talk to Me,” the directorial feature debut from Australian brothers and Youtube stars Danny and Michael Philippou, is the type of horror film whose effectiveness arises from its barebones simplicity. It asks: What if “Flatliners” was rendered as a Monkey’s Paw for the teenage audiences that fuel today’s viral videos? What would the consequences, outside of personal shame (and minor embarrassment), be for those fame addicts? The film’s answer to these questions is stunning, if not an unbearable nightmare.

The official lineup has just been revealed and it’s a banger, starting off with a special screening of Evil Dead Rise!
In addition, they have several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky!
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies, some will worm around in your brain like thoughts you can’t shake, but all of them will make you...
