What does it mean to let go? For some, letting go is something you experience moment-to-moment, constantly looking for distraction from the thing you’re running from. For others, to let go is to forgive and forget and leave your ailment in your rear view. And for the rest, letting go means not only accepting, but embracing the immovable object in your way and learning to use it and make it serve you, and others. And in the case of Danny Torrance, he’ll test each of these methods when the time comes for him to face his past, to save his present and future.

It’s scary movie season! What more can we say about The Shining that hasn’t already been said?
Fast forward nearly 40 years later to 2019, Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep hit theaters but underperformed at the box office. The long-awaited sequel to The Shining based on the 2013 novel of the same name stars Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, playing an adult Danny Torrance.

(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)
Let's get this right out of the way: "Doctor Sleep" is most certainly a vampire movie. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences classifies it that way, and it's there in-between the lines of dialogue, and in the blueprint of Stephen King's book, the sequel to "The Shining." The film adaptation, written and directed by Mike Flanagan, introduces us to a tribe of psychic vampires with glowing eyes called the True Knot, though Flanagan noticeably avoids the word "vampire," just as he did in his Netflix miniseries "Midnight Mass," and just as Guillermo del Toro did in his directorial debut "Cronos."
King's "Doctor Sleep" novel, however, equates the True Knot — led by Rose the Hat — to vampires several times. In one passage,...

Ketanji Brown Jackson’s June 30 swearing-in as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court was historic and inspiring. While her ascendance just six days after the court’s overturn of Roe v. Pokémon Legends: Arceus may not be a “typical” Pokémon game, but this bold new entry in the franchise still lets you evolve your Pokémon into exciting new forms through a variety of strange (and often confusing) methods.
Arceus does a fairly good job of letting you know when and how to evolve many of the game’s 242 Pokémon (and you’ll always be able to choose whether or not you want to evolve one at all), but there are a surprising number of Pokémon in the game without immediately clear evolutionary paths. It’s certainly possible to “solve” their evolution methods through the course of natural play, but it helps to have a little better idea of what you need to do so that you can better plan your path through this massive adventure just a little better.
So, if you’re just not sure how to evolve that one...

Photo: 'Doctor Sleep'/Warner Bros. Pictures Doctor Sleep, the sequel to the infamous The Shining (1980), is an impressive feat in intimate character study, engulfed in larger, blockbuster stakes. The film follows a middle-aged Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) as he attempts to overcome his alcoholism – the very same disease that took his father. During this decade-long journey to sobriety, we also see Danny establish telepathic communications with Abra, a young girl who has inexplicable amounts of “shine,” like Danny. As character Dick Halloran surmised in The Shining, those who have “shine” hold special, clairvoyant abilities. Alongside this narrative, we are introduced to the True Knot, a bohemian cult of immortal beings who wean their life force from children’s “shine.” Led by the stylish Rose the Hat (played by Rebecca Ferguson), the group searches for new energy sources, which have been depleted in the past decade. When Abra’s “shine” is noticed by Rose,...

“Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King. Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra...

As with the first trailer for the sequel to “The Shining,” references to Stanley Kubrick’s famous film abound as Ewan McGregor’s grown-up Danny Torrance explores the abandoned ruins of the Overlook Hotel, faithfully re-created for the film from Kubrick’s original set designs.
Danny, the boy who was both blessed and cursed with the supernatural ability known as The Shining, was hunted by his father after he was driven to madness in the original story.

Stephen King released the long-awaited follow-up to The Shining in 2013, titled Doctor Sleep. Now, the horror novel has been adapted into an equally chilling film starring Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance, who you can catch a glimpse of in the trailer above.
Even though Danny is all grown up, he's obviously still a little shaken by everything that went down at the Overlook Hotel all those years ago with his father. Fortunately, he still has his "shine," which he needs to fight a child-killing cult called the True Knot. The top hat-wearing cult leader (Rebecca Ferguson) is after one young girl in particular, the evanescent Abra Stone, who has a "shining" so powerfully spectacular, she becomes the True Knot's main target.
Together, Danny and Abra begin a battle for the latter's soul as an epic war between good and evil rages on, all culminating at the place where everything began: the Overlook.

Rebecca Ferguson opens up about bringing Rose the Hat, the villain of Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, to the big screen.
A role as the villain of any Stephen King movie is a big enough deal as it is, but what about the antagonist in the sequel to one of the most beloved King adaptations ever made? It's a huge deal. Fortunately, when Doctor Sleep, the sequel to the The Shining, arrives in theaters later this fall, it will count on the extremely talented Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) to bring the evil Rose the Hat to the big screen.

Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s “Doctor Sleep” had its first footage unveiled at CinemaCon on Tuesday, and the links to “The Shining” are strong.
While details are still being kept under wraps, the sneak peek did show Danny Torrance, played by Ewan McGregor, still struggling with the trauma stemming from the events of his childhood. And as he stumbles in the dark, he looks in the mirror and sees an ominous vision: “Redrum,” the backwards version of “Murder” that he muttered as a child and which was painted on the walls of the Overlook Hotel all those years ago.
“As a child he went through a terrible experience, and he’s trying to figure out how he’s going to deal with this Shine,” said McGregor in a featurette, referring to Danny’s supernatural ability to telepathically communicate.

The Salem witch trials are brought screaming into the 21st century through the lens of the modern teenage experience. This is the story of how the town “lost its f-ing mind.” With its cellphone alerts and glitchy, grindy soundtrack, it’s a snapshot of youth today. It will date instantly, of course. But right now it’s enough to make you ditch your smartphone and go back to the 3310. Assassination Nation is a sensory shotgun to the face. It’s multi-layered and it feels vital.
The highly fractured story gravitates around four high school friends. Popular and trendy, they lead their private lives, share some of it online, and then come together and chat about the bits they shared.

“Looks like I’ve been crying again over the same thing,” Faye Webster confesses over a breezy steel guitar, making for a really depressing luau. “I wonder if anyone has ever cried for me.” In “Room Temperature,” the second single off her upcoming album Atlanta Millionaires Club, you can’t help but share in Webster’s lackadaisical loneliness. Her dewy, subdued vocals keep repeating the same truth, crashing harder than waves on a beach: “I should get out more.”

Though Stephen King’s 2013 novel Doctor Sleep serves as a follow-up to 1977’s The Shining, you can imagine that there are a lot of horror fans out there who are familiar with the story of the latter but not the former. But with a film adaptation of the sequel scheduled for release later this year, actress Emily Alyn Lind has offered a helpful synopsis of the sinister events to come.
As you may be aware, director Stanley Kubrick brought The Shining to the big screen back in 1980 with a movie starring Danny Lloyd as as a psychic young boy named Danny Torrance. For Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep, the role will be filled by Ewan McGregor, and in a recent episode of The Direct Message Network’s Now What?! podcast, Lind teased what’s become of little Danny:
“So, basically, it picks up from when Danny – played by Ewan McGregor...

Mø dropped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform her Forever Neverland track “Blur.” The Danish pop star’s tour begins tonight. Mø and her band performed “Blur” in front of a large moon that was backlit by a red light. It matched the song’s opening lyrics: “Under the bad, bad moon tonight/Baby you should trust me.” From there, she danced and belted in front of the moon orb for an alluringly menacing performance.

“Respeto” is the directorial debut from Alberto “Treb” Monteras II. The story follows the journey of an aspiring rapper Hendrix (played by rapper Abra). We watch him hanging with his friends, getting in trouble with local gangs, falling in love, and most important of all trying out in the local underground rap battle scene. Although this synopsis makes it sound like a conventional coming-of-age story, it is not. The tropes are all here, yet Monteras is interested in something larger than just how an individual learn to express oneself.
Respeto is screening at the exground filmfest
At the beginning of the film, it does not only introduce us our hero, but also the town he inhabits. After taunting some local young delinquents, Hendrix has to run away from them. The mobile camera follows him swiftly while we follow him zigzagging through the crooked streets and alleys. The cinematographer Ike Avellana...

High school senior Lily and her crew of besties live in a haze of texts, posts, selfies, and chats – just like the rest of us. So when a provocateur starts posting details from the private digital lives of everyone in their small town of Salem, the result is a Category 5 shitstorm. We’re talking browser histories, direct messages, illegal downloads, secret text chains, and way, way, way worse. People get angry. Like, “rampaging murder posse” angry. And Lily finds herself right in the middle.
Sam Levinson’s Assassination Nation is one, if not the most, destructive, controversial and operatic films ever of such an excessive and progressive nature. Deconstructing and reconstructing itself in the wake of a complete bombardment...

Whether you're in it for the slick gore or the destruction of the patriarchy, Assassination Nation has something for everybody
Highly stylized but frequently clunky, Assassination Nation is at its best when it doesn’t get too bogged down in ideology. The premise of a widespread data breach is in many ways the ultimate 21st century horror show, and writer/director Sam Levinson astutely chose young women (including a black woman and a trans woman) as the vehicles through which a town would process its most hypocritical vitriol. The cinematography is especially imaginative during a disorienting attack, including an anxious, voyeuristic long shot from outside of the house where the girls are hiding and a beautiful underwater staple gun fight for this bonkers attempt at high-concept horror.

Box Office: ‘House With a Clock in Its Walls’ Edges to $24 Million Debut, ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ Stumbles
“The House With a Clock in Its Walls” is on its way to a No. 1 debut at the box office with an estimated $24 million from 3,592 North American locations.
The remaining top five slots should go to box office holdovers, with three other R-rated films opening in the $1 million to $3 million range.
“House” stars Cate Blanchett and Jack Black as an eccentric witch and warlock who live next door to each other and who play host to 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his Uncle Jonathan (Black) in Michigan after his parents die. Eli Roth directed the fantasy pic from a script by Eric Kripke, adapted from the children’s book of the same name by John Bellairs. The Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment film is coming in above earlier estimates, which had placed it in the $18 million to $20 million range. It took in an estimated $7.8 million on Friday.

Fear not, ye sensitive viewers who have stumbled into writer-director Sam Levinson’s story of four young women who go from shamed, blamed, framed victims to avenging angels: You’ll get a brief roll-call montage of “trigger warning” alerts before the insanity kicks in. Part PSA and part sneering at the P.C. brigade, this introductory bit of ballyhoo proudly ticks off the potentially traumatizing elements you’re about to witness, including (but not limited to): bullying, classism, toxic masculinity, transphobia, guns, nationalism, racism, murder, the Male Gaze, rape (attempted), swearing,...

Jack Black’s “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” is ticking to a U.S. opening of $20 million-plus, early estimates showed on Friday.
Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s fantasy film is expected to debut at the higher end of estimates, which were projected to be between $18 million and $20 million at 3,500 North American locations. According to some estimates, the film could earn as much as $25 million in its debut.
The adaptation of John Bellairs’ children’s book is set to earn about $7 million on Friday, including the $840,000 it reeled in from Thursday night previews. The preview gross was comparable to another one of Black’s book-to-movie adaptations, “Goosebumps,” which earned $600,000 in late-night shows in October 2015 on its way to a $23.6 million launch.

Its story couldn’t be more contemporary — what happens to a small community when people’s online secrets start getting exposed — but “Assassination Nation” is clearly the product of artists with a deep background in old movies. The plotline recalls “Le Corbeau” (that 1943 Nazi-occupation classic about a French village torn apart by poison-pen letters) by way of “Jawbreaker,” and the red, white and blue split-screens will tickle both fans of Godard’s “Made in U.S.A.” and Abel Gance’s “Napoleon.”
And even if the somewhat scattershot “Assassination Nation” might not wind up being as well remembered in cinema history, audiences may nonetheless forgive the film’s shortcomings because of its sheer verve and chutzpah. Whatever faults lie in the script by writer-director Sam Levinson (“Another Happy Day”) get swallowed up by the flash and dazzle of his direction and the editing by Ron Patane (“A Most Violent Year”).

There’s timely, and then there’s Sam Levinson’s Sundance hit “Assassination Nation,” which explores a question that continues to confound contemporary society: what happens when someone’s online existence crashes into their offline world?
The film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year and is hitting theaters this week, explores what happens when that question must suddenly apply to an entire town. It starts with the adults — the high school principal, the mayor, public figures who should safeguard their more nefarious online dealings with care — who are all exposed to their fellow citizens via their supposedly secret online affairs.
Then, it’s everyone, including some of the town’s coolest teens, like high school senior Lily (Odessa Young) and her friends, who have their own secrets to spare. The film also stars Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra as the rest of the foursome at the center of everything,...

We've got another red-band trailer for you to watch for the upcoming wickedly insane film Assassination Nation. This was one of my favorite films at Sundance because it didn't pull any punches. This was a brutal film and it offers some dark and disturbing commentary on our society in the most insane ways.
The film is set in the small town of Salem, reminiscent of where 20 witches were hung because of nothing more than rumors about them being witches. In fact, imagine how much crazier things might have been if the Salem Witch mob had access to social media. That is the road that this movie goes down.

"Who knows? Maybe I'll get pissed off and fight back." Neon has debuted another new red band trailer for the film Assassination Nation, one of the big breakouts from the Midnight category at Sundance earlier this year. From writer/director Sam Levinson, the film is about the town of Salem, Massachusetts and how everyone loses their minds when a hacker releases the entire internet history of everyone in the town. It's much smarter than you think and features some incredible filmmaking and gnarly performances. The cast of rowdy youngsters includes Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, Anika Noni Rose, Colman Domingo, Maude Apatow, Kelvin Harrison Jr., with Bill Skarsgard, Joel McHale, and Bella Thorne. The film is also playing at Tiff this week, which is why they're releasing another new trailer to give it a final push. Hopefully this little indie hits it big with audiences when it opens this month.

A young actress by the name of Kyliegh Curran has been cast in the role of Abra Stone in director Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's Shining sequel Doctor Sleep.
Abra is a major character in the story. She is the granddaughter of Jack Torrance and the niece of Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor). She becomes the main target of Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and the True Knot because of the powerful psychic abilities that she has. Here are some additional details on the character:
Abra was born with a very powerful psychic abilities, like her uncle Dan. Her abilities are even greater than Dan's were at his peak, to the point where she was able to generate a small earthquake with her mind. She physically meets Dan in her teenage years, though she begins psychically communicating with him almost from the moment she was born.

That means you get Robert Redford’s final performance, Matthew McConaughey aiming for Oscar-sanctified sleaziness and the makers of TV’s This Is Us letting a host of famous names mount a full-frontal assault on your tear ducts. Plus you can choose from name-driven documentaries (will it be M.I.A. or Michael Moore?) and outrageously violent fever dreams (demon-killer Nic Cage or gun-toting teenyboppers). Updated: With Wednesday, Thursday and Friday events. Captain Marvel, The Guardians of the Galaxy and whoever is alive from The Avengers won’t be showing up in San Diego, but there will be plenty of other big screen rivals to keep the temperature at a scorching level in Hall H.
At this point in time, many film screenings are oddly missing from the lineup, except for kiddie pic Teen Titans Go! To the Movies! on Friday. Perhaps there will be more as they’re often announced at the last minute or suddenly during the confab (Read Lionsgate’s Blair Witch). Comic-Con has traditionally been a successful launch pad for such fan faves as Sausage Party, Star Trek Beyond, The Visit, Annabelle: Creation and Don’t Breathe. Don’t worry, on the TV side there’s the AMC premiere of Better Call Saul season 4.

Easily the most polarizing of the Midnighters that played as part of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, writer/director Sam Levinson’s Assassination Nation perfectly encapsulates the crossroads we’re currently at as a society. It’s a cinematic experience that you’re either going to be on board with or you’re not, because that’s just the type of film that Levinson delivers, and frankly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. Levinson’s horror/action/coming-of-age hybrid clearly recognizes that it’s time to stop dancing around many of the troublesome issues at the forefront of his story, and by the time the finale of Assassination Nation rolls around, it’s evident that he’s crafted something of a rallying cry that feels so vital right now. Does he always find the answers here? No, but at least we have someone out there asking some of the tough questions,...

Stephen King greenlit a sequel to The Shining, both his novel and the Stanley Kubrick film. Here's what you need to know about Doctor Sleep.
Warner Brothers' adaptation of Stephen King's sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, is happening. The sequel is directed by horror auteur Mike Flanagan, who helmed Oculus and Gerald's Game, and who recently directed one of Netflix's very best films, Gerald's Game, which itself was a King adaptation.
Doctor Sleep first arrived in 2013 as a novel by King, 36 years after the publication of The Shining, and stars Danny Torrance, who is still coping with the aftermath of what happened so many years ago at the Overlook Hotel. Like his father, Dan struggles with alcoholism and anger management, but eventually gives up drinking and settles down in New Hampshire.
