Larry David’s beloved comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is gearing up for a grand showing at the Primetime Emmys. The 12th and final season of the HBO/Max series has submitted for 35 nominations, including the top prize for outstanding comedy series.
Playing a fictionalized version of himself, David is again vying for the lead comedy actor category. He hopes to unseat last year’s winner and current frontrunner, Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear.” Though David is a two-time Emmy winner for writing and creating “Seinfeld,” he has yet to win as an actor despite six nominations, the last of which came in 2008.
Supporting actors J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, two-time former nominee Cheryl Hines and Tracey Ullman will also compete in the main acting categories, as well as a posthumous submission for Richard Lewis, who died in February.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Season 12 premiere.
It’s rare for “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to revisit a side character once their main season has ended. But in the HBO staple’s final season, the series makes room for one final nod to Keyla Monterroso Mejia’s delightfully bizarre Maria Sofia Estrada.
Mejia told TheWrap it was “crazy” to be back after the end of last season. “The overwhelming response that I received, I felt really grateful,” she said.
Maria Sofia was a thorn in Larry’s (Larry David) side all throughout Season 11 of the comedy. After a man drowned in his unfenced pool, Larry found himself blackmailed by Marcos (Marques Ray). As long as Larry agreed to cast Marcos’ daughter in his new show, the restaurant owner promised to not press charges for his brother’s death. The only problem was that Maria Sofia...

Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is coming to an end after almost a quarter of a century.
“It’s time,” the famously curmudgeon funny man told me Tuesday at the Season 12 premiere at the DGA in Los Angeles. “Twelve seasons – that’s a lot for a television show – over 24 years. It was time.”

It’s a running gag in the 12th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm that people keep mentioning that Larry David didn’t work on the last two seasons of Seinfeld, but then returned for the finale. Every time, Larry greets the observation with stony silence, because he knows the audience hated that finale, and assumes he is being given another thinly-veiled complaint about it.

It can feel discordant to see someone mourning amid the pastel-hued bungalows of a beach-bound town, beneath a blue sky. Not that single mom Kristine is grieving exactly in bittersweet, comedic Sundance drama “Suncoast” — a fact Laura Linney’s character makes decidedly clear to a counselor at the hospice center of the title. After all, her son Max (a very still Cree Kawa), who’s dying of brain cancer, isn’t gone yet; he’s just no longer there.
Daughter Doris (Nico Parker), however, is still very present, and she’s bristling under years of Kristine’s not-grieving and Max’s unresolved state. If that sounds harsh, it really isn’t. In her semi-autobiographical directorial debut, Laura Chinn places her sympathies with the child who isn’t ill, at least at the outset. Doris has been conscripted into the kind of caretaking that can tax even the most trained of adults,...

Netflix has decided not to renew Latina-led teen dramedy Freeridge, a spinoff to On My Block, for a second season, Rolling Stone has learned. The news arrives just two months after the show first premiered on the streaming service in early February, according to a source.

Keyla Monterroso Mejia is learning not to judge her characters — even if, at first, they seem a little annoying.
After memorable guest spots on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Abbott Elementary, the Baldwin Park native is leading Freeridge, a spinoff of the Netflix dramedy series On My Block. The show follows four high school students — Gloria (Mejia), her sister Ines (Bryana Salaz) and their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cameron (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) — as they try to ward off a curse while dealing with family health woes, sibling rivalry and will-they-won’t-they relationship drama. Mejia’s character, Gloria, is a little intense, though generally well-intentioned. The type-a teen, sophomore class president and queen of devastatingly brutal clapbacks has taken on a maternal role in her family after the loss of her mother — but the audience first meets her amid a no-holds-barred schoolyard fight with her sister.

(Spoiler alert: This article contains Season 1 spoilers for “Freeridge”).
“Freeridge,” the spinoff to Netflix’s coming-of-age dramedy “On My Block,” is not trying to recreate the mystical realism of its predecessor, according to leads Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz, who anchor the series with their brutally honest portrayal of two sisters often at odds with one another.
“We were all huge fans,” Mejia — best-known for her scene-stealing turns in “Abbott Elementary” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — told TheWrap of “On My Block.” “Funny enough, we knew — we were casted in it — and we all watched the fourth season together. Oh, my God, justice for Spooky! But that’s neither here nor there.”
Despite following a new core four in the title neighborhood as they uncover the mythical happenings around them, co-creator Lauren Iungerich was steadfast in her belief that “Freeridge” would neither replicate nor rehash the four seasons of the show that established its universe.

The cast of the "On My Block" spinoff, "Freeridge," promised the new show would bring all the high jinks, mystery, romance, and life lessons that fans of the original loved, and the series - which hit Netflix on Feb. 2 - certainly delivers.
"Freeridge" season one follows a new core four of high-school friends - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Inez) - as they navigate friendship, love, class conflict, grief, and - believe it or not - a curse wreaking havoc on their lives.
With appearances from familiar "On My Block" characters sprinkled throughout the fast-paced season - like Ruby's parents, Geny (Paula Garces) and Ruben (Eric Neil Gutierrez), as Gina and Inez's neighbors; Jamal (Brett Gray) calling in with some Roller World intel; and an Abuelita look-alike - "Freeridge" packs a punch for old and new fans alike.

Fans of Netflix's "On My Block" were passionate about the slice-of-life show that followed the lives of four friends in Freeridge, CA, as they navigated high school, romance, and socioeconomic hardships. The show ended in the fall of 2021 after four critically acclaimed seasons, and it's safe to say the young cast taking on the mantle of a brand-new core four in its spinoff, "Freeridge," - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Ines) - have quite the legacy to live up to. However, they're the perfect group of up-and-comers to take on the challenge, because they love "On My Block" just as much as its fans.

Freeridge is a comedy series created by Lauren Iungerich, Jamie Dooner and Jamie Uyeshiro. It stars Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Shiv Pai and Bryana Salaz. Freeridge is a different kind of comedy, with very different kinds of characters.
Forget about perfect families living in perfect mansions with blonde bangs in the wind. These four teen friends fight with each other, have real problems and they buy things in supermarkets that offer bargains, and, they have a problem: an ancient box that ruins their lives and makes them be victims of a curse, so they will try to do everything possible and impossible to get rid of it.
Freeridge is amusing although a little conventional and it tries to break away from pre-established rules, but always remains within conventional patterns for teen comedy.

To read the logline of Freeridge, you might assume it’d fit neatly into Netflix’s extensive catalog of supernatural teen shows, alongside Wednesday or Stranger Things. Its central premise involves a curse, one that our 15ish-year-old heroes fear has befallen them thanks to a mysterious old box and their increasingly desperate efforts to undo its effects.
But the “ooky-spooky” stuff turns out to be less the main event than the clothesline on which the On My Block spinoff hangs its real, relatable concerns: the uncertainty of the future, the confusion of young love, the comfort and the burden of family. And while Freeridge emerges as a lighter show than its predecessor, it shares the same empathetic heart, playful sense of humor and, above all, deeply endearing affection for its young leads.
The unofficial leader of Freeridge‘s central quartet is Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), the type of problem-solving go-getter...
