Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Welcome back to the world of “Bridgerton,” the Netflix superhit that gets everyone invested in Regency-era romance by making it clear that the only way empire-waist gowns work is when they’re torn off by hereditary nobility. As it’s been a while since our last opportunity to mingle with the Lords and Ladies of the ton, here’s a refresher on who’s who (and who’s doing who) in London town this season.
I. The Bridgertons
The Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and her children stand at the center of London society, partially because their unlimited funds make them a financially desirable family to marry into, but also because they’re all the kind of hot that makes one stop and go “No,...

Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) has the piping hot tea, and she’s spilling it all over London. Her poison pen — quill? — is aimed at high society this season, with the most acid reserved for the “tasteless, tactless” Lady Featherington (Polly Walker) and her three daughters, Philipa (Harriet Cains), Prudence (Bessie Carter) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). The Bridgerton family gets much better reviews from Lady Whistledown, particularly their oldest daughter Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), who also manages to elicit the only positive reaction of the season from Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel). Daphne and her widowed mom (Ruth Gemmell) are thrilled, but Daphne’s sister, Eloise (Claudia Jessie), points out that Daphne now has a target on her back.
It looks like Daphne’s set to own the social season and nab herself a highly eligible husband, but enter a new rival: Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), a “distant cousin...

Baghead, the supernatural horror-thriller from the producers of It and Barbarian, stars Freya Allan (The Witcher) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), and is the feature debut of director Alberto Corredor.
Following the death of her father, a young woman inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shapeshifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.
Adapted from Corredor’s award-winning short film of the same name, Baghead also stars Ruby Barker (Bridgerton), Peter Mullan (Top of the Lake), Saffron Burrows (You) and Julika Jenkins (Dark). Released in UK cinemas earlier this year, Baghead features a superb lead performance from Allan, in her feature film starring debut, and is a must-see for fans of horror smash hits Smile and Talk to Me.

Baghead is the latest offering of rules-based horror. As in, the characters follow specific rules and maybe they can survive their uncanny predicament. Alberto Corredor’s first long feature, an adaptation of his own short film of the same name, wastes no time establishing the system in which his characters must struggle. Admittedly, the high concept here is convoluted and also not executed to its fullest, but the film still manages to brew up some creepy moments as well as deliver an intriguing, not to mention fearsome antagonist.
Freya Allan (The Witcher) plays Iris, the struggling protagonist of Baghead. After losing her apartment, Iris inherits her estranged father’s (Peter Mullan) pub following his sudden passing. Soon enough, the young heir is offered a fat wad of cash by Jeremy Irvine’s desperate and frazzled character, Neil, in exchange for access to the pub’s basement and the “woman” living down there.

"Talk to the dead. Pay the price." Leave the dead alone! Studiocanal has revealed the first official trailer for a creepy new supernatural horror film called Baghead, created by Spanish filmmaker Alberto Corredor. (Not to be confused with the Duplass Brothers' indie classic Baghead from 2008.) From the producer of It and Barbarian, meet Baghead in this new horror thriller. Following the death of her father, a young woman inherits a run-down pub & discovers a dark secret hidden down in its basement: Baghead – a shapeshifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence. Danger! Yeah this sounds super frightening. Freya Allan stars as Iris, with a cast including Ruby Barker, Ned Dennehy, Peter Mullan, Jeremy Irvine, Saffron Burrows, and Svenja Jung. This looks like it gets crazy once they let this woman out of the basement, even though that's exactly what her dad told her not to do.

Something evil lurks in the basement in the first trailer for Alberto Corredor’s unsettling new horror film, Baghead.
We’ve had some stellar horror films in 2023, but it’s time to cast our eyes to the future. We’re already looking forward to Imaginary and Night Swim, but Alberto Corredor’s Baghead looks very intriguing indeed.
Take a look at the first Baghead trailer below.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Following the death of her father, a young woman (Allen) inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shapeshifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.”
Baghead comes from the producers of It and Barbarian and there is definitely a bit of Barbarian’s DNA present in the Baghead trailer. Something rather evil was lurking in the bowels of a house in Zach Cregger’s hit horror as well.

Bridgerton actress Ruby Barker is opening up about two psychotic breaks she had as a result of the show.
In an appearance on Oxford University’s The Loaf Podcast, Barker revealed that the hit Netflix series — based on the Julia Quinn novel series — caused her to have psychotic breaks, which were kept quiet so as not to damage the show before it premiered on the streamer in December 2020.
Barker portrayed Marina Thompson, a character who was a main player in season one. “I was deteriorating,” she explained. “It was a really tormenting place for me to be because my character was very alienated, very ostracized, on her own, under these horrible circumstances.”
She shared that her first break came a week after the cast finished filming the first season, and she was checked in to the hospital. She was there for about a year, and when she came out, the show was about to premiere.

While Colin has always appreciated Penelope’s friendship, especially because she’s often the only one who can be bothered to write to him consistently when traveling, he’s never seen her as anything more than a friend.
For her part, Penelope had been in love with Colin forever. However, her feelings shifted at the end of season 2. During a ball, the duo danced, and Colin told Penelope she was special. However, she later overheard him telling his friends that he would never court her or consider her in a romantic light.

There are slews of characters in Bridgerton. Though the series primarily focuses on the Bridgerton siblings trying their hand at love in the marriage market, other characters have become just as important. In season 1, fans were introduced to Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), a distance cousin of the Featheringtons. She arrives in London in the summer of 1813 with several suitors. However, she’s hiding a secret pregnancy.
Marina isn’t a central character in Julia Quinn’s book series, but her presence in the TV show foreshadows her fate.

While Bridgerton book fans may have put this together, TV Bridgerton fans might not know that Eloise’s (Claudia Jessie) eventual husband, Sir Phillip Crane is currently married to Marina Thompson.

Netflix's "Bridgerton" found a huge audience when it premiered over Christmas 2020, thanks in part to its deep exploration of romance and love. But in season two, a nonromantic relationship takes up more of the spotlight and ends in heartbreak: the friendship between Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).

It was Penelope, the overlooked wallflower, using her unique social standing to collect and spread rumors about everyone she knows - and to pocket some money of her own. In season two, it becomes much harder for Penelope to keep the secret as Eloise starts attending all the same balls and events where Penelope gets her best material.
Meanwhile, Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) is still obsessed with unmasking Lady Whistledown, and she's ordered her footmen to follow all...
