New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) The 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic edged closer to Carlos Alcaraz’s No. 1 position following his Cincinnati Masters triumph as per the latest Atp Rankings released on Monday.
Djokovic saved one championship point en route to a 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) victory against Alcaraz for the Cincinnati title which saw him reduce the gap between the two players to just 20 points.
Alcaraz narrowly held onto the No.1 place in the rankings with 9,815 points while Djokovic sits on 9,795.
Although Alcaraz leaves Cincinnati as the No.1 player in the Atp Rankings, Djokovic will enter the US Open just 20 points behind with an excellent chance to reclaim the top spot because the Spaniard is defending 2,000 points at US Open.
The 36-year-old is the overwhelming favourite to leave Flushing Meadows in the top spot. All the Serbian needs to do in New York to guarantee his return to World No.

Paris, June 12 (Ians) After capturing the historic achievement of winning a record 23rd Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, Novak Djokovic said he doesn’t want to call himself the greatest as it will be “disrespectful towards all the great champions of different eras”.
The Serbian defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud in straight sets on Sunday to become the first player to win all four majors at least three times.
Djokovic’s title run in Paris, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, means he will return to No. 1 in the Atp Rankings on Monday for a record-extending 388th week.
In the post-match presser, when asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest male player in history?” Djokovic said: “I don’t want to say that I am the greatest, because I feel, I’ve said it before, it’s disrespectful towards all the great champions in different...

Paris, June 10 (Ians) Novak Djokovic, who moved within one win of a record 23rd major trophy by defeating World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz to reach the final at French Open, said that history is always something that’s hovering over him and he is just thinking about winning the next match.
Djokovic on Friday pulled away from the physically ailing Spaniard after a pulsating opening two sets to clinch a four-set triumph and move to the brink of history.
The Serbian will face Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final in order to move ahead of Rafael Nadal in the Grand Slam titles race.

Paris, June 10 (Ians) Emulating past successes is never easy, but Casper Ruud made it appear so on Friday at Roland Garros.
The Norwegian charged to his third championship match in the space of five Grand Slam events with a seemingly nerveless 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 semi-final victory against Alexander Zverev at the clay-court major, reports atptour.com.
Ruud, who was a finalist in Paris a year ago and at the 2022 US Open, delivered a performance full of his trademark clean baseline hitting to overwhelm Zverev and wrap a two-hour, nine-minute triumph on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
“Honestly I just went out there and tried to play without too many feelings, without thinking too much,” said Ruud in his on-court interview. “If it’s towards the end of the tournament, everyone here playing today has done well anyway. So I tried to play without pressure, without thinking too much, and not to play with too much emotion,...

Paris, June 9 (Ians) Novak Djokovic moved to within one win of capturing a record 23rd major crown on Friday at French Open, where he moved past an ailing Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the semi-finals, here.
The 36-year-old Serbian came out firing in the generational battle on Court Philippe-Chatrier, pulling the 20-year-old Spaniard around with destructive and consistent groundstrokes to win the first set. Alcaraz and Djokovic went blow to blow, with both demonstrating exceptional agility and movement in a high-quality and engrossing opening first two sets.
After Alcaraz levelled the match, he started to cramp in the right calf at the start of the third set, and forfeited his service game at 1-1 so he could fast-forward to a changeover and be treated by an Atp physio.

Paris, June 8 (Ians) After experiencing a quarterfinal defeat against Casper Ruud for the second consecutive year at the French Open, Holger Rune anticipates that the Norwegian is the favourite for the semifinal and will make it to consecutive Roland Garros finals.
In a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal showdown, the fourth-seeded Ruud earned a 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory against Rune to continue his bid for a second consecutive final at the clay-court major. He will meet Alexander Zverev in Friday’s semifinal.
Rune, who has had his two best major showings by reaching back-to-back quarters at Roland Garros, is the second Danish man after Kurt Neilsen to reach that stage in multiple majors.
While clearly disappointed with the loss, the 20-year-old Dane was quick to tip his hat to the locked-in Norwegian.

Paris, June 3 (Ians) Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud continued to make smooth progress at the French Open as he dispatched Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 in the third round, here on Saturday.
The fourth seed Ruud, who is the highest seed remaining in the bottom half of the draw, emphatically pounced on short balls throughout the two-hour, 38-minute third-round clash.
He stepped forward effectively to dictate with his heavy forehand, using a mixture of spins in the lively conditions on Court Suzanne-Lenglen to earn his 14th clay-court win of the season.

Manacor (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Rafael Nadal on Thursday pulled out of the French Open 2023 after failing to recover from a hip injury, that he suffered in January.
The 14-time champion will not play in the season’s second major for the first time since his tournament debut in 2005.
The French Open starts in Paris on May 28 and runs until June 11.
The 36-year-old Nadal has not competed since January at the Australian Open, where he suffered an injury to the iliopsoas muscle in his left leg.
Nadal and his team were expecting a recovery period of six to eight weeks, but the lefty has not returned to action.
In addition to his record 14 trophies at the Roland Garros, Nadal owns a 112-3 record across 18 career appearances at the major. His 112 match wins and his 97.4 per cent win-rate both stand alone as records, as does his perfect 14-0 mark in finals.

Rome, May 16 (Ians) Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit from the Italian Open with loss against Fabian Marozsan has repercussions beyond the Rome Atp Masters 1000 event and it also could have a big effect on the battle for No. 1 in the Atp Rankings.
The Spaniard will return to World No. 1 next Monday, but instead of departing the Foro Italico with a sizable advantage, Alcaraz may be left with only a narrow lead if Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev push on to have deep runs in the Italian capital.
If Djokovic and Medvedev both lose in the fourth round on Tuesday, Alcaraz will lead Djokovic by 950 points and Medvedev by 1,395 points.
But both stars can claim plenty of points on the Italian clay. Djokovic, a six-time Rome champion, can reach 6,775 points by the end of the tournament, which would bring him within 40 of Alcaraz’s 6,815.

New Delhi, April 10 (Ians) German tennis star Alexander Zverev believes he could have defeated Rafael Nadal in last year’s French Open semifinals if he had not injured his ankle.

Then, the Spaniard went on to win the tournament, his record 14th Roland Garros title, after beating Casper Ruud in the final 6-3, 6-3, 6-0.
During an interview with Eurosport, Zverev was asked whether he thought he would have won the semifinal if he didn’t get injured, the German said: “For some reason I did. I don’t want to sound arrogant.”
“Rafa is obviously the best player to ever play on that surface so you never know what happens. You never know...
