We’ve all heard it before: the book was better. For the most part, it’s true. The best literary adaptations mine something newly cinematic from their source material; at worst, they’re so doggedly faithful to the text that the end result feels nervously redundant or like an overly gutsy cash grab.
We’ve seen it on screens big and small. Take Joe Wright’s notorious 2020 Netflix thriller “The Woman in the Window”: a film that loop-de-looped through so many ups and downs — from uneasy test screenings and rewrites and re-shoots to a big-money handoff from now-defunct Fox 2000 to the streamer — it never stood a chance of coming out the other end as anything less than mangled. The story of a boozy agoraphobic voyeur played by Amy Adams, the film was adapted from an already controversial page-turner by A.J. Finn, an author whose rocky backstory could easily fill...

Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl” was published in 2012 with huge success, and two years later it was adapted into an equally successful movie. The Oscar-nominated film saw great performances from lead actors Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
“Gone Girl,” a postmodern mystery film directed by David Fincher, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, and Carrie Coon in major roles. The movie follows the events that unfold in Nick Dunne’s (Affleck) life when his wife, Amy (Pike), mysteriously vanishes. Things turn for the worse when Nick becomes the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance.
“Gone Girl” is much-loved by fans for several reasons. Firstly, the story plot is intense and unforgettable due to its unanticipated climax. Secondly, both the book and movie offer a female protagonist who is complex and resourceful beyond measure. If you’re yet to watch it, we recommend that you do so. And finally, for...

Diana the Musical, the much-mocked telling of the life story of Diana, Princess of Wales, has swept the board at this year’s Razzie Awards.
Complete winners list below.
The stage show, of which a filmed version was shown on Netflix, won five awards at this year’s Golden Raspberries, including worst picture, worst actress for Jeanna de Waal in the title role, worst director, worst supporting actress and worst screenplay. It had been nominated in nine categories altogether.
Netlix streamed a filmed version of the stage show before it debuted on Broadway, without a live audience due to theaters being closed at a time of coronavirus restrictions. When the theatrical show eventually opened, it lasted for only 33 performances on Broadway before the curtain fell for the final time.
The Razzies also saw basketball star LeBron James winning worst actor for Space Jam: A New Legacy as well as sharing...

James “won” the worst lead actor trophy for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the half-cartoon flick that was also named worst sequel and worst screen combo. Scroll down for the complete list of Razzie Awards 2022 winners, which are noted in gold.

Joe Wright’s “brutal” vision for the psychological thriller “The Woman in the Window” was shattered thanks to a drawn-out production, dismaying test screenings, multiple reshoots and re-edits, and an overall “long, protracted, frustrating experience.”
Wright opened up to Vulture about the adaptation of A.J. Finn’s novel of the same name, which premiered on Netflix in May 2021. Amy Adams stars as Dr. Anna Fox, an alcoholic, pill-guzzling recluse who witnesses the supposed murder of her neighbor, Jane Russell (Julianne Moore), only for Jane’s husband (Gary Oldman) to introduce Anna to another Jane Russell (Jennifer Jason Leigh).
What should’ve been awards-season fodder with Oscar nominee Wright at the helm was deemed a dud by most, and arguably marked the end of that version of the Hollywood studio system with the film rights changing hands over the course of production. The film eventually landed on Netflix, which bought the...

In a year where the Kristen Stewart-led Spencer earned its share of awards buzz comes word that another project about the late Princess Diana is the leading candidate for the anti-Oscars. Diana, the Musical, the filmed version of the ill-fated Broadway show, took a final bow with nine nominations for the 42nd annual Razzie Awards revealed today.
The show “scored” nine noms for the 2022 Golden Raspberries spanning nearly all of the categories, including Worst Picture, Actress, Actor, Director and Screenplay. The Woman in the Window and Karen are a distant second with five apiece, followed by Space Jam: A New Legacy with four and Infinite and The Misfits with three each.
The “winners” will be “honored” on March 26, the day before the Academy Awards. Watch the nominations video above.

As is tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced their contenders on the eve of the Oscar nominations. The Razzies, now in their 42nd year, are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the worst films of the year. Scroll down for the full list of nominees in all 10 Razzie Awards categories ranging from Worst Picture to Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel. Unique to this year is a category dedicated to Bruce Willis and his eight performances in pictures last year.
Leading the 2022 Razzie Awards nominations roster is the Netflix version of the Broadway flop “Diana: The Musical” with nine bids. Tied with five apiece are “Karen” and “The Woman in the Window.” Each of these ill-conceived movies counts a Worst Picture nomination among its haul. Joining them in that race are the sequel “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and the sci-fi flick “Infinite.”
As usual, “winners” will be decided by Razzie members.

The Razzie Awards nominations recognizing the worst “crap streaming, beaming and steaming from our various screens and devices” of 2021 — as the group put it — have been announced, with LeBron James, “Diana: The Musical,” Amy Adams and Bruce Willis topping the heap.
“Here’s a look at what we saw,” the organization said in a press release. “The excruciating musicals, thrill-free thriller rip-offs, a nearly 2 hour product placement flick, and more Bruce Willis than any starving viewer could stomach. In other words, 2021 did not fail the Razzies!”
With Oscar nominations coming out on Tuesday morning, the Academy Award’s snarky counterpart, the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies) followed suit as they do every year at this time acknowledging the superior work – or, actually, the inferior work – coming out of the entertainment industry.

Once you get past the ridiculously long title, there's an underlying sincerity to Netflix's new dark-comedy thriller, "The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window." Inspired by A.J. Finn's 2018 novel, "The Woman in the Window," the dark-comedy series stars Kristen Bell as Anna Fox, a heartbroken mother and wife whose unhealthy coping mechanisms - namely, guzzling bottles of red wine and handfuls of prescription pills - ultimately put her at the center of a bizarre murder mystery.
Minutes into the first episode, we see Anna rush out of the house in her robe and slippers to drive her daughter, Elizabeth, to elementary school. Seconds later, the camera cuts to Anna, rumpled and dazed, staring at the school in disbelief as fellow parents look on at her with sympathy and sadness. Are all the judgmental stares a product of her rushed fashion decisions...

“The Woman in the Window” is many things. But this star-studded, twisty Hitchcockian thriller was never intended to debut on May 14 on Netflix with a 40 Metascore. That was hardly the original plan for this handsome, well-appointed New York whodunit, cast with Oscar perennials like Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Julianne Moore, which was targeted for primetime October 4, 2019 release.
In many ways, “The Woman in the Window” is a revealing glimpse of studio filmmaking for smart adults that is vanishing into the rearview. Here’s what we know about what was then — and what is now.
Then: Fox 2000 picked up book rights.
Elizabeth Gabler, who ran the prestige label Fox 2000 from 2000-2019, is known for chasing top commercial literary properties such as Oscar-winning global hits “The Devil Wears Prada” ($326 million) and “The Life of Pi” ($609 million). She closed a deal with publisher William Morrow in September 2016 for screen rights to “The Woman in the Window,...

Dial V for Voyeur: Wright Waxes Hitchcockian in Enjoyable Neo Noir
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” said Oscar Wilde, “that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” An fitting example is the latest film from Joe Wright, the much delayed, assumedly highly compromised The Woman in the Window, a Hitchcockian thriller based on the 2018 novel by A.J. Finn.

The source material is a bestseller. The cast is A-list. The director is British and celebrated, the cinematographer is French and aces, and the screenwriter is a Pulitzer-winning playwright. There is, on the surface, no reason to think that The Woman in the Window, the long-anticipated and even-longer-delayed adaptation of A.J. Finn’s 2018 prestige beach read, would not be the sort of movie designed to spike pulses whether you see it in theaters or at home on Netflix, on a plane or on a train, on a boat or with a goat.

Production designer Kevin Thompson knew Joe Wright’s film adaptation of “The Woman in the Window” would be a darkly lit movie and noirish. In bringing the A.J. Finn novel to life, he would have to find a color palette that was specific to Amy Adams’ Anna Fox, who suffers from severe agoraphobia and watches the world from inside her home.
Thompson added pops of color in the house, such as a red couch and sheer orange curtains. “We did that to inform the audience that there was life at the windows and that she once had vibrancy in her life.”
The character’s 19th-century townhouse was built on a stage and broken down into five sets. At the start of the film, which debuts May 14 on Netflix, the camera moves through the home and its spaces. The largest parts of the set were the stoop, the first floor and...

Real-estate porn can work for a thriller — or against it. Sometimes, it’s part of a movie’s mystery and allure: the luxe nooks and crannies where bad vibes can hide. (See “Rosemary’s Baby” or “What Lies Beneath.”) But in “The Woman in the Window,” a movie that takes place entirely in one old dark house, the stately Harlem brownstone in which Anna Fox (Amy Adams) resides is a movie set of such gloomy palatial grandeur that the place threatens to overwhelm everything that happens inside it.
Anna is a nervous wreck of an agoraphobe who hasn’t left the house in 10 months. It’s her cocoon, her prison, her stately dream chamber. The high-ceilinged rooms are bathed in a shadowy glow, the muted colors left over from an aging renovation, with a winding wooden staircase that extends so far up it never seems to end. It’s a dwelling fit for the Magnificent Ambersons,...

When A.J. Finn — the pen name of one Dan Mallory, whose own story would make for a hell of a book — published his debut novel “The Woman in the Window” in early 2018, the “Rear Window” ripoff became an instant bestseller. It was easy to see why, thanks to its blend of (quite literal) Hitchcockian thrills with the kind of snappy chills found in books from other hot authors like Paula Hawkins, Ruth Ware, and Gillian Flynn. Finn may have cribbed plenty, but he also created an indelible character in the agoraphobic Dr. Anna Fox. She hasn’t left her house in nearly a year, instead opting to wile her time away drinking wine, watching old movies, learning French, and chatting with a close-knit coterie of other mentally ill people online. Then: a murder (maybe) just across the street, one only Anna saw, one only Anna can solve.

A B-movie effort from an A-list production team, Joe Wright’s “The Woman in the Window” buckles beneath its aspirations almost immediately.
Wright and screenwriter Tracy Letts have adapted Dan Mallory’s bestselling novel, which at one point was notorious for plagiarism accusations. (Mallory writes under the pseudonym A.J. Finn.) And the movie itself has been laboring under a shadow of a doubt since it was shot in 2018, which now feels like a lifetime ago.
After some retooling and shelf-sitting, it was acquired by Netflix and arrives with a single overarching ambition: to be considered Hitchcock-ian. Wright telegraphs this goal as clearly as he possibly can right from the start, his camera panning past an actual shot of Jimmy Stewart in “Rear Window” before sweeping up and down vertigo-inducing stairwells.
We’ve also got a Stewart-like protagonist in Dr. Anna Fox (Amy Adams). Anna is a psychologist and amateur photographer...

The Secret Talker by Geling Yan (out May 4) is a deliciously dark and twisty novel all about uncovering new things about each character - and it's not until the end that it all completely clicks. Qiao Hongmei, the protagonist, has left everything for her husband: her military intelligence job in China, her ex, the childhood village she's eager to forget. Glen, a well-off American professor, sweeps her off to a life of leisure and study in the San Francisco Bay Area. "If this were the ending," Hongmei says, "it really would be a very sweet fairy tale."
But that is only the beginning of the novel, originally published in 2005 and newly translated from Chinese by Jeremy Tiang. The plot picks up years after Hongmei leaves China, and her relationship with Glen is disintegrating. Her skin crawls when he touches her, and they communicate via notes left on the kitchen counter.

It seems like we've been waiting for the movie version of The Woman in the Window forever, but after several delays, the thriller is finally premiering on May 14 on Netflix. Curious to know more about what took so long to adapt A.J. Finn's 2018 bestseller? It's a long road of business acquisitions, scandals, and constant pushbacks.
The first reports of delays came in 2019. Originally, the movie was filmed under the 21st Century Fox banner, in its Fox 2000 division. When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, that meant acquiring all of its titles in production as well. In July 2019, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the movie was being delayed for reshoots, in large part due to a poor reception at test screenings, where audiences reportedly were confused.
"We're dealing with a complex novel," said Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler at the time. "We tested the movie really early for that very reason.

The long-delayed “The Woman in the Window” will finally see the light of day this year, thanks to Netflix, which scooped the thriller from Disney-owned 20th Century Studios last year. Adapted from the novel by A.J. Finn, whose identity has sparked its own fascination courtesy of The New Yorker’s lurid 2019 profile, “The Woman in the Window” is directed by filmmaker Joe Wright, and it stars Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The screenplay is written by playwright and actor Tracy Letts.
There has been much ado about the exhausting process of reshoots and test screenings endured by the movie, which Wright addressed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“There were some plot points that people found a bit confusing — I would say possibly too opaque maybe,” he said, adding that reshoots were necessary following test screenings that left audiences perplexed. “So we had to go back and clarify certain points,...

In February 2019, news broke that the author of The Woman in the Window––the best-selling suspense novel that is the basis for the forthcoming Fox-turned-Netflix film starring Amy Adams––was entrenched in a bit of a mystery of his own. Dan Mallory, who wrote the book under the pseudonym A.J. Finn, was exposed by Ian Parker in a New Yorker article entitled “A Suspense Novelist’s Trail of Deceptions” that explored how he fabricated many details of his life, including having a brain tumor, earning a doctorate from Oxford University, his mother’s own cancer diagnosis, and his brother’s suicide. The story itself read like a real-life version of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, and now the article will be receiving its own adaptation in a new series.
Janicza Bravo and Jake Gyllenhaal are teaming up to bring Parker’s article to television with backing from Annapurna.

Exclusive: Netflix is finalizing an acquisition deal that will move The Woman in the Window out of Disney-owned 20th Century Studios and into a new window, as a global Netflix event film. The thriller, which stars Amy Adams and is directed by Joe Wright, is the last of the splashy book-based movie projects left behind by Elizabeth Gabler when Disney acquired Fox and abruptly shuttered her Fox 2000 division. Scott Rudin and Eli Bush produced.
They are finalizing the deal so it is unclear when Netflix will release the film, which is finished.

That's why we've compiled over 95 titles that are soon to be films, such as Frank Herbert's Dune - which will star Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and more in the film adaptation - and Mark Greaney's The Gray Man - which will star Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. And, of course, we're including the highly anticipated film versions of A.J. Finn's The Woman in the Window and Anna Todd's After We Collided. Keep reading to see every book you need to add to your shelf before its movie transformation!

A.J. Finn's 2018 hit murder mystery The Woman in the Window is getting the big-screen treatment with an Oscar-pedigreed cast - Amy Adams is set to star as the protagonist, Anna Fox, with Gary Oldman as a neighbor who arouses Anna's suspicions. The addictive 2018 page-turner pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and a host of other noirish films - and fittingly so, since Anna is a fan of the old movies and also finds herself tangled in a dark tale worthy of Hitchcock himself.

You might get some serious Alfred Hitchcock vibes from watching Amy Adams in the first trailer for “The Woman in the Window,” a suspense thriller that echoes Hitchcock’s classic “Rear Window,” with a psychological twist.
Adams plays an agoraphobic child psychologist who befriends a neighbor (Julianne Moore) across the street from her New York City brownstone. She then witnesses her new friend brutally attacked by her husband (Gary Oldman) and go missing. But when she reports her friend’s disappearance to the police, it’s revealed that the woman she thinks she knows and saw disappear is a different woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) entirely. It ends up leading to a big conspiracy that makes her question her own sanity.
“She’s not Jane. I know what I saw,” Adams says to the cops. “Why are you protecting them?”

The career of Joe Wright has been one of ups and downs, with the thrilling Hanna, gorgeous period pieces such as Atonement, Anna Karenina, and Pride & Prejudice, as well as the rather forgettable projects, such as The Soloist and Pan. His last film, Darkest Hour, might have picked up an Oscar but it already seems rather forgotten. He’s now getting into the business of best-selling thriller adaptations with The Woman in the Window.
Based on A.J. Finn’s novel and adapted by Tracy Letts, the film stars Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Brian Tyree Henry, Wyatt Russell, and Anthony Mackie in the Rear Window-esque story of agoraphobic developmental psychologist who witnesses a crime scene. Ahead of a release this summer, delayed from this past fall, Fox has now dropped the first trailer, which previews the crime drama an can be seen below.

Tracy Letts is a Tony-Award winning actor and a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. He’s starred in Oscar-nominated films and earned WGA Award nominations, but it appears he’s finally encountered the deflating experience of Hollywood studio meddling. Thank the Disney/20th Century Fox merger, sadly.
