What if opening a suspicious email attachment didn’t just mess up your computer; it manipulated reality itself? Such is the premise of the latest Dust short film, Signal Dark.
“Signal Dark is a Dust short film from Silver Edge Studios. Lucas Anderson is an insular It technician whose life is turned upside down when he stumbles across a mysterious email and its reality bending contents.”
Audiences can’t seem to get enough of Zendaya on the big screen, and her performance in Challengers takes her star power to another level.
“[Zendaya] has been executing her own Tashi-esque world domination. So far, she’s moved from kids’ TV star to being a part of some of the biggest movies on the planet… With Challengers, though, she’s about to go supernova, firing up in more ways than one to become the hottest talent in Hollywood. In Luca Guadagnino’s erotically-charged drama,...

Aaron Sorkin is writing a new movie that could serve as a sequel to The Social Network.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter broke the news when he was asked during a live-from-d.C. edition of The Town podcast about how Facebook and social media have influenced democracy in the years since his 2010 hit.
“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” Sorkin told Matthew Belloni and Peter Hamby. “I blame Facebook for January 6.”
When asked why he blames a social media company for a pro-Donald Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol, Sorkin replied, “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”
Pressed if that means he’s writing this idea specifically as a movie, Sorkin replied, “I’m trying. Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you...

Snap announced today that it laid off 20 percent of its staff in a restructure intended to cut costs and save the Snapchat parent’s plunging stock price. Beyond the headcount reduction of about 1,280 employees, one of the key casualties here are Snap-funded originals. Snap will no longer invest in new original programming, although the ones announced in May will still air as planned starting this fall.
What are/were Snap Originals? Developed with and paid for by Snapchat but produced by third-party production companies, there are more than 150 of them, including “Addison Rae Goes Home” starring influencer Addison Rae, Meme Mom” starring influencer NicoleTV, and “Coming Out,” in which LGBTQ+ influencer Manny Mua hosts a show that reflects the coming out journey for six young people. Snap will lay off around 20 percent of its workforce on Wednesday, according to a memo from Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sent to employees. The layoffs will see more than 1,200 employees cut, with the company expecting to save about 500 million.
“The scale of these changes vary from team to team, depending upon the level of prioritization and investment needed to execute against our strategic priorities,” Spiegel wrote. “The extent of this reduction should substantially reduce the risk of ever having to do this again, while balancing our desire to invest in our long term future and reaccelerate our revenue growth.”
Employees impacted by the cuts will receive at least 4 months of severance, with the company telling shareholders it expects to take as much as 175 million in contract termination and impairment costs.

Bill Maher opened Friday’s Real Time with a round of applause for “a semi-peaceful transition of power.” Maher also applauded the arrival of a new administration and the comic possibilities it presents. In celebration, he spent the first 90 seconds of his monologue on Joe Biden before turning back to Donald Trump jokes. The show as a whole, however, was short on jokes and long on substance.
“It does feel like the whole Trump administration just sort of disappeared, like we lived through a fever dream,” said Vanity Fair contributing writer Peter Hamby during the mid-show roundtable. Maher agreed, comparing the current situation to the “Who Shot J.R.” episode of Dallas wherein the whole ordeal was a dream.
Guest Kamele Foster, co-host of the Fifth Column podcast, did not share those sentiments — nor did place the blame for the recent American carnage entirely at Trump’s feet.

Barack Obama might have been the president of the United States, but he's still not cool enough for his daughter Sasha. At least, he's not cool enough to know about some of her favorite songs. In an interview on Snapchat's Good Luck America series, Barack revealed that his 19-year-old daughter has a secret SoundCloud playlist that she refuses to share with him. "Sasha is more protective of her music," the A Promised Land author told host Peter Hamby. "There's certain things on SoundCloud. She has like a private playlist. She won't share all of them with me, because she's not sure I'm hip enough. But, nah, man, I'm keeping up for an old guy."
He then shared that he confers with both Malia, 22, and Sasha before unveiling his anticipated annual year-end playlists. "Those are the fresh cuts," he said. "There, I will confess that...

Colin Kaepernick Docuseries, Jaden Smith Activism Show Highlight Snapchat Originals Unscripted Slate
Snap Inc. announced five new and two returning docuseries and unscripted originals as part of the company’s ramping up of its Snap Originals slate.
The social platform, which says it reaches 90% of all 13-24 year-olds and 75% of all 13-34 year-olds, has now released 100 original shows and has a few hundred more in various stages of development. Two of the series (see the full list below) are docuseries The Solution Committee with Jaden Smith and a third season of Complex Media’s Vs The World focused on former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
The slate announcement was made Tuesday as the company took part in virtual panels at Advertising Week. Bill Maher brimmed with satisfaction Friday having swapped his backyard for a studio, an audience and live guests for the first time in months in an inching-back-to-normal Real Time with Bill Maher.
“There’s real people. Thank you Jesus. Thank you. People!” he exclaimed, throwing up his arms wide to welcome a miracle. The show is filmed at CBS Television City’s Studio 33.
The HBO show is the first big talk show to bring back a crowd, just 25 people for now but almost loud enough. “This is interesting, you can hear people laugh individually. Oh, I see that lady like that joke, that guy didn’t,” the host said.
These pandemic weeks have seen Maher bounce from enraged to peevish at his shelter-at-home backdrop of grass and trees, at telling jokes in a vacuum about his dog and at trying to coax compelling interviews off a video screen.

‘Real Time With Bill Maher’: HBO Talk Show Brings Back Limited Audience & In-Person Roundtable Panel
Bill Maher has spent much of the last few months hearing canned laughter after his opening monologue on Real Time with Bill Maher.
This week, however, the comedian will hear the reaction of a live audience after the HBO show became the first major talk show to bring back a crowd.
This week’s episode of the show, which airs Friday at 10 pm, will tape with a limited 25-person studio audience and will also feature a roundtable discussion in the studio.
The show is thought to be the first talk show to bring back audiences following the Covid-19 production shutdown. A handful of gameshows are believed to be working on bringing in limited audiences, but it’s a sign of production slowly moving back towards how it was pre-Coronavirus.
This panel will include Peter Hamby, host of Snapchat’s political show Good Luck America and contributing writer for Vanity Fair,...

Three of the broadcast networks — ABC, CBS and NBC — are ditching their primetime lineups tonight to offer live coverage of the midterm election.
This is kind of wall-to-wall coverage the networks usually reserve for the race for the White House. But the 2018 election cycle has attracted intense interest among voters and pundits who see the election as a referendum on Donald Trump’s presidency.
Democrats are hoping for a “blue wave” of angry voters to wash over the ballot boxes, and sweep the party into control of the House of Representatives. The Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, and Trump’s recent attacks on the Central American migrants walking to the U.S. border, appear to have activated the Gop’s base.
All of that electoral drama is bound to boost viewership, and justifies pre-empting The Connors on ABC,...

While Snapchat has previously dipped its toes into the original programming waters -- perhaps most notably with its two-year-old Peter Hamby-hosted political series Good Luck America -- the company is today diving head-first into producing its own content with the introduction of Snap Originals.
Beginning today, Snapchat will roll out a slate of a dozen scripted shows and docuseries -- all in vertical format. Three shows launched this morning: a Laguna Beach-set docuseries called Endless Summer (produced by Bunim/Murray); the crime thriller Class Of Lies (pictured above); and the college comedy Co-Ed (executive produced by The Duplass Brothers). Other shows set to premiere this month include supernatural soap The Dead Girls Detective Agency; Vivian, a docuseries about a Wilhelmina model scout; and the horror anthology series V/H/S.

Moore and Rye repeatedly tussled when they kept trying to talk over each other over which candidate’s economic plan made more sense.
