Local cable news upstart Spectrum News 1 has taken the crown for the first time ever in Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards nominations. The outlet, which just launched in 2018, pulled 23 nominations this year, up from 19 last year. That puts it head of public broadcaster Kcet, which was in second with 15 nominations (down from 23 last year).
The Television Academy announced this year’s L.A. area Emmy noms on Tuesday. Among commercial broadcasters, Disney-owned Kabc-tv was tops with 14 noms (up from 12 nods), then Fox-owned Kttv with 11.
There was a sharp decline in Spanish-language nominees for some reason this year. TelevisaUnivision’s Kmex and Telemundo’s Keva tied at 8 each — way down from last year’s 21 for Kvea and 16 for Kmex.
As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), daily daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and daily evening newscast (7 p.

Ktla reporter Gene Kang was doing a live standup on a prior hit-and-run collision at 84th and Hoover Street in Los Angeles when another incident was captured for the home audience as it happened.
Kang was on camera Thursday talking about how dangerous the intersection was when two cars collided directly behind him. The crew filming Kang immediately focused on one of the drivers, who pulled to the left and then sped away.
“Our security guard Walter Mann yelled ‘get back’ and we moved as the car came racing towards us. It veered away at the last second and T-boned the car,” Kang said on Ktla.
A license plate from the car that sped away was recovered by police.
“Crazy crash! I was covering a fatal hit & run story yesterday,” Kang said in a tweet on Friday.
“I was pointing out one of the most dangerous streets in #LosAngeles (Hoover & 84th Street) – then this happened!

Wes Anderson is officially returning to the big screen in 2020. Fox Searchlight Pictures has announced it has picked up worldwide distribution rights to Anderson’s next feature film, “The French Dispatch.” The journalism-centric drama is Anderson’s 10th directorial effort. The Fox Searchlight acquisition is hardly a surprise and was expected by many in the industry considering the studio was behind Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and “Isle of Dogs.” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” was distributed by Searchlight’s parent company 20th Century Fox. Now that Disney owns Fox, “The French Dispatch” will be Anderson’s first Disney film since “The Life Aquatic” release.
“We are excited to dive back into the unmistakable and entirely original world of Wes Anderson,” Fox Searchlight Pictures chairmen Steve Gilula and Nancy Utley in a statement. “Our collaborations with Wes in the past have been exceptional, and we’re thrilled to...
