The Crown may be a retelling of real events – but it’s also a work of fiction.
Netflix’s hit royal drama stirred up a wave of controversy when it released its fourth season in November 2020, attracting criticism from figures including former UK culture secretary Oliver Dowden.
Its depictions of a number of events in the life of the royal family have been scrutinised by viewers, with particular scepticism directed at scenes concerning Prince Charles’s (Josh O’Connor) relationships with Diana (Emma Corrin) and Camilla Parker-Bowles (Emerald Fennell).
However, the series has also spent time exploring the now King Charles III’s relationship with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

When I met the cast and creators of Cursed last summer, it was clear everyone was proud of the show they were producing. It made sense. As I walked through realistic stone castles, explored a lush, overgrown forest, and poked my head into Merlin's sleeping quarters, it was impossible not to get excited. There we were, in a huge warehouse in Slough - a town an hour west of London - with mythical creatures lounging on plastic chairs as they waited to be called to set, and cast members (like Devon Terrell and Billy Jenkins) casually joking with media between takes, all while smattered with blood, sweat, and dirt. Just an average day on the set of Netflix's latest fantasy series.
I expected to see the incredible costumes, hear about epic fight scenes, and get a glimpse into the world of the talented people who create the special-effect makeup.

Netflix's latest series will delve deep into Arthurian legends.
The streamer on Tuesday unveiled the full-length trailer for Cursed, and there's a lot to like.
Based on the New York Times bestselling book, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.
After her mother's death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword.
Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.
Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

With the home-schooling battles and triumphs (hopefully) several weeks in the past, perhaps it’s time that the “wee ones” were rewarded with a (virtual) trip to the movies, jumping from their computer (and laptop and iPad) screens to the big living room flat-screen. The Trolls and the Scooby Gang arrived and mostly departed by the last big holiday. So what’s up for this holiday, the Fourth of July (aside from the neighbors blasting their fireworks all through dark night skies)? The “Mouse House’ is going to “ride out” the pandemic into the Fall, when we may get to view this year’s second Pixar feature (Onward squeezed in right before the shut-down), Soul. Perhaps the small set would enjoy a flick based off of a recent classic, but featuring a mostly flesh and blood human cast. If that’s the case then they should get ready for a...

"There's always consequences." Lionsgate has released the official Us trailer for a UK comedy titled Four Kids and It, a fun-for-the-whole-family creature feature adapted from the book by Jacqueline Wilson. This already opened in the UK in April, and debuts in the Us in June. A group of kids on holiday in Cornwall meet a magical creature on the beach with the power to grant wishes. Can they learn to control the magic before something dreadful happens? Starring Paula Patton, Matthew Goode, Ashley Aufderheide, Billy Jenkins, Ellie-Mae Siame, Caroline Sheen, with Russell Brand and (yes believe it) Michael Caine as "It". Crazy. This looks like a Disney Channel remake of E.T. in the UK, which might still be fun to watch. Everything about this looks so kooky and delightfully strange. Plus, who doesn't want magic powers? Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Andy De Emmony's Four Kids and It,...

As the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc on film release schedules around the globe, displacing many titles from their natural theatrical environment, a few have instead found their spiritual home on the small screen. “Four Kids and It,” a lightweight British kids’ fantasy, falls firmly in the latter column. Always intended as a multiplatform release in the U.K. through the Sky Cinema network, it has instead taken the VOD-only route on the eve of what would have been the Easter school vacation — making it a welcome diversion for families going stir-crazy under national lockdown. But it also flatters the limitations of Andy De Emmony’s blandly chipper film, which feels, both tonally and aesthetically, more suited to afternoon children’s TV schedules than any venue larger than a living room.
That’s a somewhat disappointing outcome for a family film with a sparky literary pedigree. “Four Kids and It” is...
