The BBC will be offering more series of The Traitors from around the world, starting with season two of the Australian show.
This weekend, as those who have been avidly watching the show will know, marks the conclusion of The Traitors series two here in the UK. For most of January, a growing number of people have watched a bunch of contestants in a Scottish castle metaphorically stabbing each other in the back. Claudia Winkleman, meanwhile, watches and approves.
The format has sold around the world, and the BBC has already added the first seasons of The Traitors from the USA and Australia to its iPlayer service. The USA version is very celebrity-driven, while the Australian version, which features regular folk, is great.
Now, as The Traitors wraps up for another year in the UK – and series three is already confirmed – the BBC has done a deal to bring more...

Fans of The Traitors are cancelling their January plans in their droves.
In December, the BBC game show became a breakout hit throughout its three weeks on the air.
The series, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, saw 22 strangers play “the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust” at a Scottish Highlands castle in the hope of winning up to £120,000.
After the series, which is executive produced by Studio Lambert, came to a dramatic conclusion on 22 December, viewers were left wondering if the show would return for a second outing.
While the BBC has yet to officially say whether this will happen, fans are being given the perfect gift to tide them over until that announcement is inevitably made.
On Friday (13 January), the US version of the series became available to view as a boxset on BBC iPlayer.

The BBC has pounced on the keenly anticipated HBO Max reboot of iconic drama “Gossip Girl” as a U.K. premiere.
The show will be available on BBC One and streamer BBC iPlayer later this year. In addition, all six series of the pop culture classic, which ran from 2007-2012 will be available on iPlayer.
The new “Gossip Girl” explores just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years. Developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, a writer and executive producer on the original series, the new series goes back to New York’s Upper East Side finding a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark.
The series is based on the bestselling novels by Cecily von Ziegesar and the original show, developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

The BBC’s streaming service, iPlayer, enjoyed a record start to the year after series including Netflix co-production The Serpent and Line of Duty propelled it to 1.7 billion streams in the first three months of 2021.
Viewing to iPlayer was up 22% year-on-year in Q1 as Brits flocked to the streaming service during lockdown in the UK. Furthermore, the BBC said January was a record month, with iPlayer recording 652 million streams.
The first episode of Mammoth Screen-produced The Serpent was iPlayer’s most-watched show in Q1 after it racked up 5.9M streams. It was followed by the first installment in Season 6 of police corruption drama Line of Duty, which was viewed 3.6M times.
Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and channels, said: “BBC iPlayer is getting more viewing than ever in 2021 thanks to new must-watch series like The Serpent and Bloodlands, returning big hitters like Line of Duty and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK...

The BBC’s radical overhaul of its content team is starting to shape up as it has named Syeda Irtizaali and Jo Smith as the new portfolio editors of television channels BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC Four.
Under the restructure announced last December, the BBC is scrapping TV channel controller roles for the first time in decades. Instead, portfolio editors will be appointed to curate shows commissioned largely for iPlayer by genre heads with supercharged powers.
Stepping into one of these new roles is Irtizaali, who will oversee BBC One, the corporation’s biggest and most important TV channel. She joined the BBC as an entertainment commissioner in February 2020 after a decade at Channel 4.
Since joining the BBC, Irtizaali has overseen shows including Top Gear, MasterChef, and Fulwell 73’s Peter Crouch Save Our Summer. During her time at Channel 4, she commissioned hits including The Last Leg and The Million Pound Drop.

Almost four months after the BBC reformed its television division, the corporation has appointed the two leads for its most prominent channels.
Syeda Irtizaali and Jo Smith have been tapped as the two new Portfolio Editors working across BBC One and BBC Two and Four. Irtizaali will take on BBC One, while Smith will manage BBC Two and Four. They will start their new roles on April 12.
Chief content officer Charlotte Moore introduced the new structure for BBC Television in December — a revamp that restructured the Beeb’s television division accordingly around a new iPlayer-focused strategy, coupled with plans to scrap channel controller positions and empower the broadcaster’s genre chiefs.
Both Irtizaali and Smith will report directly to Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and channels, who will bring together all of the programming and curation activity across iPlayer and the channels.

The BBC, like most major media organizations in 2020, is betting big on digital, with new plans afoot to energize the growth of the U.K. public broadcaster’s primary digital hub and catch-up service, iPlayer.
Chief content officer Charlotte Moore is restructuring the Beeb’s television division accordingly around a new iPlayer-focused strategy, which is coupled with plans to scrap channel controller positions and empower the broadcaster’s genre chiefs.
By doing so, the broadcaster will become less focused on whether a potential show is a BBC One or BBC Two series, and place more emphasis around its content and fit within the wider digital ecosystem. Prior to the restructure, shows needed sign off from both commissioning editors and channel controllers under a clunky “two-tick” system. In the new model, genre directors will be autonomous in ordering shows.

The BBC has confirmed what has been UK industry gossip for months: That it is scrapping TV channel controller roles after decades in favor of a model placing greater emphasis on streaming-first commissioning.
BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore outlined the radical overhaul to staff on Tuesday after conducting a review of the way the British broadcaster greenlights shows at a time when U.S. streamers like Netflix are hoovering up viewers.
From April next year, the BBC will no longer have controllers overseeing BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC Four. Instead, portfolio editors will be appointed to handpick shows commissioned largely for iPlayer by genre heads with supercharged powers.
These genre heads will become directors and will have complete autonomy over the shows they commission without the need for a second “tick” from a channel controller. Moore will also no longer have her name on big new shows.

The BBC has deleted from Twitter a trailer for an ESPN original documentary series on South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius after it failed to mention the name of his dead wife Reeva Steenkamp.
The BBC press office posted The Trials Of Oscar Pistorius trailer at 10Am local time on Tuesday, but following a backlash, the broadcaster removed the promotional clip and expressed regret at the matter.
In a statement, the BBC said: “We regret that the original trail did not refer to Reeva Steenkamp directly. We are aware of the upset it has caused, which was never the intention
“We have removed the trail and it will be replaced by something more representative of the series, which examines in detail a number of complex issues connected to her murder.”

British television industry event the Edinburgh TV Festival, which runs in a digital format this year from Aug. 24-27, has revealed the first sessions of its lineup, as well as revealing a pre-festival session that will look at how issues concerning race are tackled by filmmakers.
The BBC drama “Sitting in Limbo” will be the subject of a session exploring how Stephen S. Thompson, a writer new to TV, took his brother’s experience of the “Windrush controversy” – in which British people from the Caribbean were unlawfully threatened with deportation – to the TV screen. Thompson will be joined by the show’s director, Stella Corradi, and lead actor, Patrick Robinson, to discuss the impact the drama has had, and what it says about bringing Black British stories to TV.
Festival Masterclasses will include “Normal People” – the BBC’s hit drama, with stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal in conversation with...
