Shawn studied at SUNY College at Old Westbury and Minzu University of China. He has a M.A. in linguistics where he focused on industrial scale massive audiovisual translation and a B.A. in English Literature where he studied the translation comparisons among five Chinese versions of Genesis.
Prior to becoming a film producer, Shawn Hewitt was involved in producing, translating and distributing over six hundred hours of TV and movie content for global companies such as Fremantle Media Enterprises, Asian Union Culture and Media Investment, Ciwen Pictures and ChinaVision Media Group. Through Shawn's help, Fremantle Media was able to establish a co-partnership company - Vision Ventures Ltd. in Hong Kong which specializes in creating local content for the Chinese market. Shawn also served as a consultant in areas such as global channel and digital strategies, content localization, production collaboration, corporate acquisitions, program supply and co-production deals.
Next Shawn was hired to be Wanda Media's head of International Business Affairs, Shawn oversaw the development, production and distribution of numerous films.
After leaving Wanda Shawn produced and co-financed a number of critically acclaimed and box office hits such as Jackie Chan's Police Story (1985) (1985), Keanu Reeves' Man of Tai Chi (2013) (2013), as well as Go Away Mr. Tumor (2015) (2015) and My Old Classmate (2014) (2014). Go Away Mr. Tumor was selected as the Chinese entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.
Throughout his career, Shawn had worked with countless directors, writers, producers and actors both within Hollywood and China. Not only Shawn is a true international producer, but more importantly, a bridge between US and China's entertainment industries.
Detective Chinatown 2 (2018) (2018) broke the record in China's cinema history with a whopping 3.3 billion Yen at the box office. Detective Chinatown 2 (2018) is the first ever Chinese film successfully collaborated with Hollywood's unique association and guilds. It is a true China-US co-production. Shawn has then become the first and only PGA (The Producers Guild of America) certified producer in China.
In 2019 he produced Detective Chinatown 3 (2021) which has 250 m USD in pre-sales and is set to break all box office records in China. Warner Brothers is planning a significant release of over 150 screens in North America as well as IMAX sites.
Shawn runs his own film company - Gosh Film (found in 2014) in Beijing which develops, produces and finances TV and Film. Detective Chinatown 2&3 were partially funded by Shawn's Gosh Films.
