On December 25, 2023, Warner Bros. Pictures released “The Color Purple,” a musical coming-of-age drama directed by Blitz Bazawule. Critics have responded well to the film, which holds fresh at Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% rating. Golden Globe nominee Fantasia Barrino makes a powerful screen debut as Celie, the role that made Whoopi Goldberg a star in 1985. This musical remake combines elements from the original movie, Alice Walker‘s novel and the Broadway musical. It is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
The large ensemble includes Danielle Brooks, who has earned Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards nominations for her turn as Sofia, Emmy nominee Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery and Emmy winner Colman Domingo as Mister. Through Celie’s real life hardships and colorful imagination, her journey is chronicled from childhood to adulthood as she discovers her inner strength and how the bonds of sisterhood can overcome any obstacle.

Although “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” is earning middling reviews from critics (it launched on Rotten Tomatoes with a 59 from 39 reviews), nearly every critic agrees Mads Mikkelsen is a vast improvement over Johnny Depp as the villainous wizard Grindelwald. Depp played the character in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” but he was removed from the new film just one week into production. Warner Bros. asked Depp to exit the movie following his libel case against The Sun. Mikkelsen was brought in to replace Depp.
By taking over the role of Grindelwald, Mikkelsen becomes the primary antagonist of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. The actor told Entertainment Weekly that taking over from Depp was “tricky” because “there has to be a bridge between what Johnny did and what I’m going to do. And at the same time, I also have to make it my own.” Critics appear to favor...

“Let’s see what those European weirdos nominated this year.” That might have been the nicest thing that hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler said about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association during their opening monologue at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, a show that started off awkwardly and never found its footing. Check out the complete list of Globe winners here.
Given the pandemic, there was no scenario in which there would be a normal Golden Globes ceremony. Gone was the sight of celebrities enjoying their umpteenth bottle of free champagne, a catalyst for some of the more memorable Globes moments we usually get. So Poehler and Fey had a harder task than usual, especially performing on separate coasts to a small, masked group of first responders and essential workers.

He got the rest correct, including the hard-to-predict Best Picture winner of “Parasite” and the four acting victories of Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern and Brad Pitt.

Renee Zellweger has won Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards for playing Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy,” so it’s no surprise that she’s the BAFTAs front-runner too with 31/10 odds. But is she a lock? Not according to a couple of our Experts.
As of this writing 14 out of the 16 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from top media outlets thus far say Zellweger will continue her awards season sweep: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Brian Truitt (USA Today) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

“Joker” received 11 Oscar nominations this year, more than any other film. But how many of those near-dozen bids will it actually win on Sunday, February 9? According to our Experts from major media outlets, the anti-superhero blockbuster is predicted to take home two trophies: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Score for Hildur Guonadottir. Don’t tell the Joker, but that means, conversely, his movie is poised to lose nine Oscars. The higher you climb, the harder you fall?
SEEWhy does it seem like the Oscars only considered a few films?

Renee Zellweger (“Judy”) is the overwhelming front-runner to win the Oscar for her leading role as iconic Hollywood star Judy Garland. However, two of Gold Derby’s gutsy Experts — Eric Deggans (NPR) and Brian Truitt (USA Today) — predict “Judy” will win both of the Oscars for which it’s nominated: Best Actress and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Based on our Experts’ racetrack odds, that would give “Judy” one of the biggest Oscar hauls of the year, with more trophies than Best Picture nominees “Parasite,” “The Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Marriage Story.”

The Oscars don’t usually care for horror movies, and they don’t usually remember movies that opened way back in February, but Jordan Peele overcame both of those factors with his 2017 sleeper hit “Get Out.” So are we underestimating his 2019 sleeper hit “Us,” which also received critical acclaim and was a box office success (more than a quarter of a billion dollars grossed worldwide)? Specifically, I think Lupita Nyong’o could ambush the Best Actress race — with or without her scissors.
Nyong’o was an awards darling for her breakthrough role as the enslaved Patsey in “12 Years a Slave” (2013), which ended up winning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She has worked steadily since there, both in front of the camera and in voice-over roles, but “Us” is arguably her juiciest acting showcase since that victory.

Will Martin Scorsese join the two-timers club and claim a second Oscar for directing his crowning achievement of a crime epic “The Irishman”? According to Gold Derby’s savvy team of prediction Experts, the 76-year-old legend, who already has one statuette for helming 2006’s “The Departed,” has jumped ahead this week in the odds. Previously, as October came to a close, Hollywood’s mob-movie kingpin was slightly ahead of Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) — 18/5 vs. 19/5 odds.
But that has all changed this week as Scorsese is rising at 71/20 while Tarantino slipping with 4/1 odds. However, Marty fans might want to keep an eye on South Korean director Bong Joon Ho, who is currently in third place with 9/2 odds. His darkly comical home-invasion thriller “Parasite” won the Palme d’Or — the first Korean film to do so — at this year’s Cannes film festival. The basics: Members of a...

Eddie Murphy hasn’t had a truly impactful entertainment vehicle since his Oscar-nominated supporting role as an R&b singer in decline in the 2006 musical “Dreamgirls.” But, at age 58, the one-time surefire box-office bait and “Saturday Night Live” superstar is back — and Netflix has him. And judging by the adoring crowd at the Toronto International Film Festival that greeted the comedian and his ode to ’70s blaxploitation icon and profane underground filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore in “My Name Is Dolemite,” Murphy is more than welcome.
Recounting the rousing response by the fest crowd to Murphy and his film directed by Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow”), The Wrap’s Steve Pond writes, ” ‘Dolemite’ is the Eddie Murphy show, with the comic delivering his most substantial and spirited performance in many years.” The supporting cast also stands out with such ace performers as Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Wesley Snipes and...

Critics have been less than welcoming to the return of “The Lion King” 25 years after the original’s release.
As of writing, the film holds a rotten score of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, far below the 93% of the original. Common complaints are the photorealism of the Jon Favreau’s “live-action” adaptation: Where critics adored the anthropomorphic singing cartoons of the original, they felt the nature documentary look drove a wedge between viewers and the beloved characters.
Some critics praised the fidelity to the original, while others bemoaned the lack of originality.
Here is what the critics are saying:
Variety’s Peter Debruge:
By focusing his attention on upgrading the look of the earlier film while sticking largely to its directorial choices and script, Favreau reinforces the strength of the 1994 classic. If you were never a fan of “The Lion King,” then nothing here will win you over. On the other hand,...

Smoove, Zendaya Coleman, Marisa Tomei, Numan Acar, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Remi Hii and Jacob Batalon. We're going to go over some of the statements from a few of the critics in this article. Alonso Duralde from The Wrap gave it an 85 grade. They're all pretty positive. Who woulda thunk it?
The first reactions to the very last McU instalment of 2019 are in and, shocking no one, they're mostly gushing.
While we'll have to wait to see Spider-Man: Far From Home for ourselves when July finally shows up with whatever tiresome weather it has in store trailing behind it like a mischievous shadow creature, press screenings have very much been underway, showcasing Peter Parker's second solo movie spawned from the ongoing partnership between Sony and Marvel.
What does a post-Endgame world look like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We're about to find out.
Homecoming's Jon Watts returns to direct Tom Holland as a less neighborhood-based Spidey on a school trip to Europe, where Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury collars him and asks him to "step up" and help save the world from a mysterious gang of villains called the Elementals.

Hey, Marvel Movie fans. The huge, new Marvel "Avengers: Endgame" movie officially hit theaters nationwide today, April 26, 2019, and a lot of the reviews are in from the top movie critics in the country. After skimming over a few of them, I can already see that most of them are quite positive. It got an overall 77 out of a possible 100 score over on the Metacritic.com site. In this article, we're going to reveal what a few of the top critics had to say. To get things started, Michael O'Sullivan from the Washington Post gave it a perfect 100 score, and he said Endgame is about acceptance and moving on. He stated, "If “Infinity War” was about failure, “Endgame” is, ironically, all about acceptance and moving on. After 11 long years, the Infinity Saga is finally, fulfillingly over. There is no post-credit scene. But oh, what a going-away party these old friends have thrown for themselves.

There’s a chance that all eight Best Picture nominees end up with at least one Oscar on Sunday. Based on our combined odds, it really depends on if “Black Panther,” which is not leading in any of its seven categories, can sniff out a win. And if it manages to win the biggest prize of them all, Best Picture, it’ll be the first film to do so in 86 years without directing, acting or writing nominations.
The last film to accomplish this rare feat was “Grand Hotel” (1931/32) at the 5th Academy Awards in November 1932. The film, of course, is the only one to claim Best Picture without any other nominations. The only other Best Picture champ without above-the-line nominations was the very first one, “Wings” (1927/28), but it had another bid, Best Engineering Effects, which it also won.

With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

“Vice” is the most nominated film at the Golden Globes this year with six bids including Best Film Comedy/Musical, but according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, that race is really a match-up between “Green Book” and “The Favourite.” So which period film will win: the civil right era buddy movie, or the comedy of (bad) manners set in Queen Anne’s court?

Since then she has appeared in Oscar nominees like “About a Boy” (2002), “The Hours” (2002) and “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006), but she herself has not returned to the academy’s lineup. Well, she’s on the verge of another awards windfall, and it’s thanks to another horror film, “Hereditary.”
“The Sixth Sense” earned Collette a Best Supporting Actress nom for playing Lynn Sear, the mother of a troubled boy who sees dead people. That bid came as a surprise; even though “The Sixth Sense” was a major contender throughout the awards season, Collette hadn’t been nominated by the BAFTAs, SAG Awards, Golden Globes or any critics awards before the academy came calling.

Heading into Thanksgiving, “A Star is Born” maintains its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race according to the predictions of the 30 Oscar Experts at Gold Derby by a vote of 18 to 5. But watch out for “Green Book,” which now has the backing of five pundits (that’s up from just one at the beginning of the month). “The Favourite” and “Vice” have one Oscarologist apiece in their corner. [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
While “A Star is Born” still has a clear edge for first-place votes from the experts, it is only just ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart. It leads with odds of 13/2 to take home the top Academy Award while the other two are just behind at 15/2. This discrepancy is down to the relative rankings of these three films by all of the experts, including those that don’t have them in first place. [See the latest racetrack odds.]

Way back on Nov. 26 — back before the National Board of Review or any other award was doled out this Oscar season — I told you that “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” would win Best Picture on March 4. It wasn’t just casual speculation. Ferociously, in this blog post, I planted my flag with loud bluster and bravado “because I want to own this thing (before) everybody’s on my ‘Billboards’ bandwagon.”
Back then the only other Expert predicting “Three Billboards” was Brian Truitt (USA Today), who later dropped it for “Shape of Water,” but, granted, picked it up again. I’m the only true believer who kept the faith all along and felt so strongly about my choice because “this year I’m hearing consistent adoration across Hollywood for one film, ‘Billboards,'” I wrote. “It’s everybody’s private discovery, one they feel personally vested in, even if they tell...

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). For his work on “Dunkirk” he’s nominated alongside first-time Oscar-contender Alex Gibson,...

Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.

For most of the awards season “Jane,” which profiles primatologist Jane Goodall, was the Oscar front-runner for Best Documentary Feature — until of course the Oscar nominations were announced. “Jane” didn’t even end up with a bid, so now the race is wide open. But based on our latest predictions leading up to Oscar weekend the race will have an unusual outcome: “Faces Places” gets leading odds of 8/15 to win, which would give director Agnes Varda a competitive Oscar the same year she won an honorary Oscar.
It’s not uncommon for an artist to win both competitive and honorary Oscars in their career, and it’s not unprecedented to win a competitive Oscar after you’ve won your honorary award: for instance, actor Paul Newman and composer Ennio Morricone have pulled off that feat. But it’s unusual to receive both awards in the same Oscar season. The 89-year-old...

As final Oscar voting ended on Feb. 27, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” leapt ahead of “The Shape of Water” in the race for Best Picture. Martin McDonagh‘s character study now has the votes of 11 our 27 Oscar experts from major media outlets to win while Guillermo del Toro‘s fantasy has fallen back to nine. Those respective levels of support translate into odds of 17/10 versus 9/4.
But watch out for “Get Out,” which has six experts in its corner and competitive odds of 7/2. “Lady Bird” continues to have a single backer and odds of 20/1 to pull off an upset. (See the individual rankings by experts and the resulting odds.)
This late surge by “Three Billboards” coincides with the end of the second and final round of voting for the Oscars. The Best Picture winner, as well as those in the other 23 competitive categories, will be revealed live on the 90th Academy...
