From Disney darling to pop star, Dove Cameron's career has undergone quite the evolution since she began acting in her early teens. The versatile actor's earliest fans grew up alongside her as she played identical twins "Liv and Maddie" for four seasons on the hit Disney Channel show. But Cameron's professional acting career began even earlier, when she memorably guest-starred in two episodes of "Shameless" as Holly Herkimer, a young woman who was interested in Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White).
Cameron's early work in "Shameless" and "Liv and Maddie" showed off the actor's range. Right from the start of her career, it was clear she could pull off comedic and dramatic roles, just as she could pivot between family-friendly fare and more daring projects. In recent years, she's continued to challenge herself as an actor with roles in B.J. Novak's directorial debut, "Vengeance" and Hulu's comedic...

The stage musical adaptation of NBC’s Smash is “alive and kicking,” says producer Neil Meron, and he and composer Marc Shaiman have the photos to prove it.
Both Meron and Shaiman posted photos – and, in Shaiman’s case, some Broadway-belting-style audio clips – of an all-star reading of the work in progress, with Meron writing, “Last week, Robert Greenblatt, myself and an unnamed producing partner, who has many incredible movie credits on his resume, proudly assembled this creative team that is breathing new life into our TV series—amazing book by writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, the iconic score and then some by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and musical director extraordinaire Stephen Oremus.”
See the photos below.
Shaiman wasn’t quite as shy about that big movie production – no secret it’s Steven Spielberg – and provided a few more hints about the project.

From the outset of Amazon Studios’ new “Cinderella” movie, writer-director Kay Cannon welcomes audiences into a fantasy unlike any before it, putting a glimmering girl-boss gloss on the oft-adapted fairy tale. In this heightened unreality, characters can break into song with a Janet Jackson chart-topper as easily as they belt out a new Broadway-style power ballad. This latest retelling of the Charles Perrault classic offers a feminist-friendly update as its titular heroine dreams of a career, not a man, to whisk her away. While Cannon’s inspired creative approach and jukebox musical style all point to an elegant and empowering redesign of this most familiar of garments, her execution puts quite a few tears in the fabric.

Billy Porter is following in Whitney Houston’s footsteps.
The “Pose” star plays the Fairy Godmother in Amazon’s “Cinderella,” writer-director Kay Cannon’s new take on the classic fairy tale. It’s the same role Houston played in the 1997 TV-movie with Brandy in the title role.
“My 14-year-old sissy self is doing backflips, spinning around like the Tasmanian devil,” Porter told me at the “Cinderella” premiere Monday night at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. “My goal as a young teenage boy was to be the male Whitney Houston so I get this call and I just screamed, ‘I got the Whitney Houston part. I got the Whitney Houston part.’”
Porter describes his version of the character, called Fab G, as genderless. “Magic is love and neither have any gender,” he explained.
The film also includes the first Latina Cinderella, played by Camila Cabello, who makes her acting debut in the movie.

With help from mouse-turned-footman James Corden and a genderqueer fairy godparent, Camila Cabello’s Ella gets to go to the ball in an outfit of her own creation
This musical Cinderella’s stodgy online trailer fluffed the snark glands of social media, with its warbly American Idol-style cover versions and the presence of producer-actor James Corden in a comedy mouse-turned-footman supporting role. There may even have been some unkind overexcitement at the thought of a new Cats-level debacle. But no. Actually, writer-director Kay Cannon’s new Cinderella isn’t bad, and Camila Cabello makes a rather personable lead, carrying off some of the movie’s generous helping of funny lines. Doesn’t she want to go to the ball, testily inquires genderqueer fairy godparent Fab G, played by Billy Porter. “Yes, I was just crying and singing about it,” says Cinderella thoughtfully.

Good morning Baltimore! And Los Angeles! And Chicago! Slowly but surely, the country is reopening city by city, state by state, after more than a year of Covid restrictions. To celebrate, James Corden crafted a whole Broadway number — with the help of Ariana Grande — to say farewell to lockdowns.
Sung to the tune of “Good Morning Baltimore” from “Hairspray” — though in a much lower key, so both of their voices can make it work — Corden and Grande frolic around the streets of California, celebrating all the things they can do now. It requires a bit of an outfit change for Corden, who naturally starts the video wearing a bathrobe (the unofficial dress code of quarantine times).
“Oh, oh, oh, woke up today feeling okay. Wow, this is new!” Corden sings. “Oh, oh, oh, got the vaccine and it’s been two weeks, there’s life in the streets!”

Emmy, Grammy and Tony award-winning actor Billy Porter is continuing to change and challenge perspectives when it comes to gender norms, this time in Kay Cannon’s forthcoming live-action iteration of Cinderella at Sony. The Pose star is set to play the fairy godmother in the feature, and in a recent interview with CBS he said that he plays the character as genderless.
“It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother — they call it the Fab G,” Porter said in his CBS News interview. “Magic has no gender.”
He added that playing the role as genderless is “powerful” and that it is going to be “a classic fairytale for a new generation.”
“This is a classic, this is a classic fairytale for a new generation,” he said. “I think that the new generation is really ready.

“I’m not the Dalai Lama, but I’ll try to offer up a few words of advice,” Dolly Parton chirped in her 2008 single “Better Get to Livin’,” before doling out exactly the brand of wholesome, no-nonsense wisdom you’d expect from the indefatigable country queen: If you keep your head up, keep moving forward and say the odd little prayer, life will more or less work out fine.
It’s no surprise that “Better Get to Livin'” features prominently in “Dumplin’,” a film as big on homespun heart as it is short on the letter ‘G,’ and one that certainly places Dolly and Dalai on more or less the same spiritual plane. The singer may not star in Anne Fletcher’s lovable self-help comedy — about a plus-size, Parton-worshipping teen who shakes up her small Texan community by entering a local beauty pageant — but from her integral narrative presence to...

Australian actress Danielle Macdonald first caught the attention of Hollywood with a star-making turn in Geremy Jasper’s 2017 Sundance hit “Patti Cake$,” which cast her as an unlikely heroine saddled with a baked good-based nickname yearning to break free from expectation and convention by using her unexpected skills in rap to shine. She’s trying something similar in Anne Fletcher’s “Dumplin,'” in which she is set as an unlikely heroine saddled with a baked good-based nickname yearning to break free from expectation and convention by using her unexpected skills in beauty pageants to shine. If your guilty pleasures expand to include Hallmark-style sentimentality this time of year, you might consider adding “Dumplin'” to your viewing lineup. It has nothing to do with the holiday season, but it’s wrapped as neatly as any gift you might find under a Christmas tree.
Though directed by rom-com vet Anne Fletcher and written by producer Kristin Hahn (“The Departed”), this modest dramedy — which is being released simultaneously in theaters and on Netflix — is a far better fit for the small screen. But a big heart and strong cast go a long way towards elevating its prosaic approach.
Most of the credit goes to the two leads, Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald, who play a markedly mismatched mother and daughter. Aniston’s strenuously meticulous Rosie was, as she’ll happily remind anyone who asks, 1991’s Miss Teen Blue Bonnet. This might not seem like much to us,...

Retro vibes underscore the remarkable production design work on “The Crown,” “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and “Hairspray Live!,” which all share the same goal: to humanize their worlds with imagination and relatability.
In “The Crown,” Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) endures a rite of passage inside and outside the palace that offers personal and political challenges; In “Stranger Things,” ’80s suburbia contains a mirror-image dark side. In “Westworld,” the allure of a western adult theme park cracks open violence and hate. In “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” three orphan children persevere despite being passed around from one bizarre home to another. And in “Hairspray Live!,” idealistic Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio) upends segregated Baltimore by winning a dance contest.
“The Crown”
Oscar-winning production designer Martin Childs (“Shakespeare in Love”) utilized showrunner Peter Morgan’s sense of dramatic movement and sharp dialogue to make the private world of Queen Elizabeth II more intimate.
