Everyone knows masked avenger Zorro, aka Diego de la Vega, righting the wrongs while trying to keep his identity secret.
Then again, maybe they don’t.
“I don’t think people were expecting this version of “Zorro.” It’s a completely new take, full of adventure, action, love and diversity,” Renata Notni tells Variety ahead of its Jan. 19 premiere in the Americas on Amazon Prime Video which bow the series in Spain on Jan. 25.
“Elite” alumni Miguel Bernardeau, now cast in the titular role, adds: “It has been a long time since his last incarnation. Before, Zorro used to be played by people who were older than Diego was supposed to be. Now, we really see his coming-of-age. He is figuring out who he wants to be as an adult. That’s something many people can relate to.”

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

“It is undoubtedly the best debut in Spanish cinema for years,” Pedro Almodóvar announced of Alauda Ruíz de Azua’s movie “Lullaby,” as it began to prove one of Spain’s liveliest sleepers of 2022, going on to score a Spanish Academy Goya Award for new director.
Having made such an illustrious first feature, what kind of TV debut could Ruíz de Azua make directing her first series? Some large inkling was given on Wednesday as Movistar Plus+ opened up the set of miniseries “Querer” to a select delegation of Spanish press.
In short, if on-set interviews are anything to go by, in her TV debut Ruíz de Azua returns to an eye-opening intimate family drama set in her lush native Basque Country, a story which delivers once more some uncomfortable truths about women’s role in traditional family structures.

Zee-Sony Merger Back On Track
The merger of Zee Entertain Enterprises and Sony’s Indian arm looks to be back on track after an order banning Punit Goenka from managing the new entity was lifted yesterday. The merger of Zee and Culver Max Entertainment was given the go-ahead in August, but the merger has run into several problems. The India Securities and Exchange Board had barred Goenka and his father, Zee founder Subhash Chandra, from the boardrooms of listed companies for a year over allegations of insider trading. However, the Securities Appellate Tribunal has overturned that decision, paving the way for the $10B merger to go ahead and for Goenka to resume his role as MD and CEO of Zee. Sony and Zee have been planning the union for over two years now.

At one point, it seemed like Elite was unstoppable.
The Spanish teen drama kicked off on Netflix in 2018 and became one of the streaming service's most popular series.
As the years have passed, the cast has been refreshed consistently to keep the drama fresh and exciting.
The latest seasons have failed to live up to the hype of the initial three seasons, and now, it's all ending.
On Wednesday morning, Netflix announced via social media that Elite Season 8 would bring the series to a close.
The news broke two days before the premiere of Elite Season 7, so those still hooked on the series still have plenty to look forward to.
The original cast included María Pedraza, Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, and Miguel Herrán.
Also on the original cast are Jaime Lorente, Álvaro Rico, Arón Piper, Mina El Hammani, Ester Expósito, Omar Ayuso, and Danna Paola.

Spanish star Miguel Bernardeau can relate to “Zorro.”

Following the success of “Elite,” Bernardeau has become a household name. But he doesn’t think about it when choosing his roles.

Mipcom opener “Zorro” is produced by L.A. and Madrid-based Secuoya Studios and directed by Javier Quintas. As reported by Variety, Prime Video has acquired rights for the U.

Questions (and concerns) about AI will come to the foreground at this year’s Mipcom international co-production and content market, which runs Oct. 16–19 in Cannes. Alongside the thousands of buyers and preeminent audiovisual execs expected to hit the mart, immersive producers, media regulators and legal experts will take the stage for an Oct. 17 “Unlocking AI” summit meant to address ethical concerns and better contextualize those two anxiety-inducing vowels on everyone’s mind.
“We are staging this summit because AI has universal importance in each of the 100 different countries that attend Mipcom,” says event director Lucy Smith. “And we hope our contributors can both demonstrate and demystify [the new technology].”
Hewing along more traditional lines, October’s edition will kick off with an event screening of the Secuoya Studios’ “Zorro,” a small screen comeback for the swashbuckling Don Diego de la Vega — here played by “Elite” and “1899” star Miguel Bernardeau — in a production...

Mystery-thriller “Dark” handed Netflix one of its first big international hits, while announcing German creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese as potential masters of the atmospheric puzzle-show.
The pair’s latest, “1899,” presents an even more elaborate conundrum, expanding outwards from its escape-room opening: a blanched heroine (Emily Beecham) awaking in a cabin of the Kerberos, a steamer carrying immigrants to the New World. Armchair detectives will already be noting the woman’s bruised wrists, the postcard on her dresser, the newspaper reporting a vanished ship with an equally suggestive name. Critics were left scrambling for the middling-to-long list of spoilers Netflix’s PR team were keen for us to avoid.
If “Dark” was “Twin Peaks” without the goofiness, then “1899” risks synopsis – and simplification – as “Lost” on the high seas. In fact, this is several shows at once, and part of the puzzle lies in figuring out which one it wants to be.

You can tell if somebody’s watched German Netflix series Dark by the furrow in their brow and the delirium in their eyes. The 2017 – 2020 time-travel mystery required a flip-chart of graphs and diagrams to explain, but proved a cult hit for Netflix and led to its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar signing a deal with the streamer. 1899 (read our spoiler-free review here) is the result.
“Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that [1899] is going to be something weird and wild and crazy,” Friese promised Deadline about her and Odar’s new Netflix series. The writer-directors vowed not to repeat themselves with the new eight-episode period drama, but still to give their audience a fun puzzle that returns to the pair’s mystery roots.

The long-awaited 1899 premieres Thursday, November 17, on Netflix.
After watching the episodes provided to critics for review, it's clear the series is another winner from Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese.
1899 takes viewers to the high seas for a story focused on a group of migrants traveling from London on a steamship to start a new life in New York City.
However, things turn mysterious when they encounter another migrant ship adrift in the ocean.
The mysteries crafted by the creatives leave you with more questions than answers, but the beauty of the writing is that we get a lot of payoff throughout the first six episodes.
There's an immediate sense of dread in the series premiere that doesn't subside as crazy happenings occur, leaving us with the feeling that things will get worse before they get better.

Hailing from Dark creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, 1899 is a suitably creepy and mysterious period thriller about a missing (possibly haunted) ship. The eight-episode Netflix series is a combination of the first season of The Terror and Ghost Ship with a splash of Downton Abbey.
The series opens with a nightmare as Maura Franklin (Emily Beechum), an English doctor, awakens from a dream where she’s threatened by a mysterious man shrouded in shadows. Immediately upon exiting her room it’s clear that she’s already onboard a ship, crossing the ocean to New York like her brother Henry. He and more than a thousand other people have been missing for four months since something happened to the Prometheus, a sister ship to the one Maura is on. Her only hint of what happened is a letter addressed to Henry asking him to come to New York as quickly as possible.

If you were a fan of Netflix’s Dark, then the next mind-bending series from creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar looks to be right up your alley. Netflix has released another trailer for 1899, a mystery series which follows the passengers of an immigrant ship encountering the biggest mystery of their lives on their journey across the cast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean.
Set against Jimi Hendrix’s cover of All Along the Watchtower, the 1899 trailer looks like a wild ride, full of disturbing imagery and mysteries just begging to be solved. Baran bo Odar has previously teased that 1899 will be unlike Dark in a lot of ways. “Dark was not about action at all, but this is really an action show, with a lot of violence, beating, running, screaming,” Odar said. “I think it’s going to be exciting to watch with the audience [to see] if they love this new puzzle too,...

On their journey across the vast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean, the passengers of the Kerberos encounter the biggest mystery of their lives. Welcome to 1899, an immersive new series from the creators of Dark. This seems like a story about the Bermuda Triangle, but they wouldn't pass through that region going to New York from Europe. Are you ready to take a terrifying trip on the high seas? Hot off the heels of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the latest series from "Dark" creators Jante Friese and Baran bo Odar is about to set sail onto Netflix. "1899" has a seemingly straightforward premise, centering around a group of migrants sailing to New York City in the titular year. However, their voyage won't be smooth, as an abandoned migrant ship called the Prometheus crossing their path houses more secrets than anyone could expect. As the trailer showcases, this encounter has many grave consequences that go far beyond anyone's comprehension.
Of course, there is undoubtedly a lot about the show that this new trailer is hiding. Nevertheless, it already looks to be a chilling look at immigration, prejudice, and the innate fear of the unknown. If it is just as effective as "Dark" was with its heavy themes,...

Netflix has dropped the new trailer for 1899, the hotly anticipated new mystery horror series from the makers of Dark.
And it is really weird.

The second trailer expands on the universe Dark masterminds Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have created for 1899, without ever explaining what is really going on. But there are plenty of bread crumbs to follow — including the repeated image of a black triangle — that should prove...

Netflix is doubling down on Elite, which is set to become one of the streamer's longest-running series.
On Thursday, the service ordered Elite Season 6, well ahead of the still unscheduled Elite Season 5 premiere.
What's more, we're getting three holiday-themed episodes of the Spanish teen drama with new episodes of Elite: Short Stories set to air in December.
The specials are as follows:
- Phillipe, Caye, & Felipe (December 15)
- Samuel & Omar (December 20)
- Patrick (December 23)
The renewal was a no-brainer. Elite has solidified itself as one of the streamer's most popular dramas.
Also helping matters is that the cast rotates in and out, meaning that unlike many other shows, the budget will not be soaring with every season.
Elite follows the students of a private secondary school in Spain that always seems to attract scandal.

Juan (Roberto Álamo), a prison security officer, is a man of few words: In fact, in the first near four minutes of “Josephine,” he doesn’t say anything at all as the film fills us in on his daily routine.
It’s a sad, solitary existence of bathetic detail: The film begins with a frontal shot of a spin-dryer turning: Few things seem more banal. And when he finally wants to talk, following a woman, Berta (Emma Suárez), whom he spies one day on the bus to the jail, he opens his mouth but is stumped for words.
Berta’s son is serving time in the jail. The spectator never finds out why. When Juan finally does get to talk to Berta,
flummoxed, afraid he will put her off if she’s knows he’s a guard, he claims he has a daughter Josephine, who’s also an inmate.

Exclusive: Netflix’s first German original series Dark was always going to be a tough act to follow for its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. The mind-bending, time-weaving show debuted on the platform in December 2017 and attracted a global fanbase across a run of three taut, satisfying seasons until it concluded in June 2020. Alongside critical acclaim, the series is also understood to have been a viewing hit for Netflix, which doesn’t disclose specific numbers but did reveal back in October that it was the streamer’s third most watched international series in America.
In 2018, Friese and Odar inked a significant overall deal with Netflix that sees them exclusively create projects for the streamer across an initial five-year period. Post-Dark, their next show will be 1899, an ambitious period mystery set on a migrant boat sailing from Europe to the United States. As Deadline revealed today, the project will star Aneurin Barnard,...

Netflix has set June 18 for the worldwide release of Season 4 of its popular Spanish YA drama series Elite.
The series received an early fourth season renewal two months before Season 3 premiered, and it was renewed for Season 5 in February, ahead of the Season 4 launch. Created and written by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, Elite is one of the streamer’s best performing Spanish originals, with Netflix noting in 2019 that it had been seen by more than 20 million households.
Season 4 picks up with a new school year at Las Encinas, as well as a new director (Diego Martin): one of the most powerful businessmen in Europe, ready to bring the Las Encinas institution, which, according to him, has been running amok in the past few years, back on track. He brings his three children with him: three teenagers too used to always get their own way,...

Netflix has (finally!) announced when Elite fans can check back into Las Encinas.
The long-delayed fourth season of the private-school drama will land on the streaming service Friday, June 18.
An episode order has not been revealed, but it is expected to be in line with the previous three seasons, which spanned eight episodes apiece.
The premiere date means fans will have been waiting 15 months between seasons, but the long delay is due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Elite Season 4 production was forced to shut down, but it resumed a few months ago, and with work on the season has now been completed, production on Elite Season 5 has already commenced.
Yes, fans have a lot of Elite to look forward to, but this won't be the same Elite we know and love.

Netflix Spain’s popular YA series “Elite” season four will premiere on June 18 worldwide. Among the service’s most popular programs in any language, “Elite” stands among the few series, international or American, to surpass the three-season mark at the platform.
The U.S streaming giant first announced season four just about two months after season three launched on the streamer and was seen by more 20 million households. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. In late February of this year, Season Five was commissioned by Netflix, and two new key castings announced in Valentina Zenere and André Lamoglia.
The two newcomers will join the now superstar cast including series regulars Miguel Bernardeau, Claudia Salas, Georgina Amoros, Itzan Escamilla and Omar Ayuso, who joined the show in season three.

The trials and tribulations of the students at Las Encinas will continue to be charted at Netflix.
The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.
Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.
Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.
Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.
Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.
