In an unprecedented move, Warner Bros. announced Thursday that all 17 films on its 2021 slate will launch on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters — a model that was previously announced for the release of “Wonder Woman 1984.” In a statement, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar doubled down on the fact that this was a necessary response to the Covid-19 pandemic, saying, “We see an opportunity to do something firmly focused on the fans, which is to provide choice. Whether that choice is to enjoy a great new movie out at the cinema, to open up HBO Max, or to do both.”
Naturally, the news was met with a flurry of reactions ranging from shock to anger. Some, like Vulture critic Jen Chaney, worried about the impact the news could have on theaters. She tweeted, “I have been extremely reluctant to make any nail in the coffin pronouncements about the future of movie theaters.

Stranger Things Star Millie Bobby Brown Joins a New Netflix Drama With Her Sister Called A Time Lost
Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is set to star in a new Netflix drama with her sister Paige Brown called A Time Lost. This is an original story that was created by the Brown sisters, and Anna Klassen (Dark Hours: Roxana) is attached to write the screenplay.
The story follows “a long-standing feud between two Long Island families which comes to a head when one of their teenage daughters is diagnosed with cancer.”
That sounds like it’ll be a heavy movie. The Brown sisters said in a statement, “We are so grateful to Netflix for their confidence in us and this beautiful story, which we have spent years writing and developing. It’s about friendship, family and overcoming obstacles when it feels like the world is pushing you down. It’s been a labor of love, literally.”
Lisa Nishimura, VP Independent Film and Documentary Features, added, “Millie is an extraordinary creative talent.

Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz are both public domain properties, and Netflix is bringing together the two main characters from those separate worlds to create a new and unique story.
The film project is called Dorothy & Alice, and the crossover will see the two characters team up for a “fantasy adventure epic.” The story follows Dorothy who is sent to a home for girls after experiencing terrible nightmares, and it’s at this home where she meets Alice.
According to Collider, Netflix has hired Anna Klassen to write the script, which was previously worked on by Justin Merz (Disney’s Rose Red). She confirmed that news on Twitter saying, “The Cheshire Cat is out of the bag. I’m writing Dorothy & Alice for @Netflix, a fantasy adventure epic. Hold on to your plumey helmets: Disney held the first public screenings for “Captain Marvel” Tuesday night, and just minutes after it ended, the joyous online reactions began.
Much praise was given to star Brie Larson and the film’s portrayal of Carol Danvers, the first female hero to lead a Marvel Studios film. But co-star Ben Mendelsohn was celebrated as the film’s “surprise Mvp.” Also, pretty everyone agreed that a cat named Goose is wonderful.
“#CaptainMarvel doesn’t owe us anything, but holy wow does it deliver,” said Et Now’s Meredith B. Kile.
“Carol’s hero moment was very cathartic/true to the female experience,” said Den of Geek’s Kayti Burt.

Marvel Studios had their first screening for Captain Marvel last night, and the first reactions from the critics who got to see it have flooded social media!
As you’ll see from all the positive buzz, they loved the movie! Several of them talked about the film being filled with surprises that they didn’t see coming, and they praise the actors and the style of the movie. Then there’s Goose the cat who gets a lot of love as well.
I was already excited for the movie, but after reading these reactions from many of my peers, I’m even more excited to see it! I know a lot of people are on the fence about this film; some aren’t really even interested in seeing it. But maybe some of these these reactions will change your mind.
In the end, go see the movie for yourself and form your own opinion.

Yes, the embargo on social reactions to Captain Marvel has been lifted, and here come the highs and lows that go with that, building a rollercoaster of anticipatory emotions we weren't ready to feel.
Brie Larson stars as pilot-turned-Kree-warrior Carol Danvers in next month's McU gamble, which will set up a whole new road to Avengers: Endgame in April. Writers will understand this – your best ideas can come to you anywhere and at anytime so you’d better take a notebook or something to record them on everywhere you go. Sometimes, though, even the best of us have to improvise, like J.K. Rowling did when originally coming up with the Harry Potter books.
The Wizarding World author took to Twitter recently to reveal that her ideas for the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry hit her when she was travelling on a plane. With nothing else to hand, Rowling had to settle for writing these ideas, which would later become so iconic, on a sick bag.
“The best thing I ever wrote on was an aeroplane sick bag,” she revealed. “Came up with the Hogwarts houses on it.”
The Tweet was in response to a conversation from various authors about the times they had to use...

There’s a brand new Harry Potter story currently ricocheting off the walls of the Internet, and you’ll never guess who – or rather what – wrote it.
As reported by Nerdist, the whip-smart Muggles over at Botnik Studios have produced a new and frankly hilarious chapter in the Potter saga using only predictive keyboards – one for narration, the other for dialogue. And so, after feeding all seven novels through its custom-built keyboard, it churned out a semi-coherent narrative called Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash. No, really.
The text itself includes such zingers as “he began to eat Hermione’s family” and tangential thoughts in the vein of “to Harry, Ron was a loud, slow, and soft bird. Harry did not like to think about birds.” Suffice it to say, it’s absolutely worth reading.
Here’s another sample:

You’ve heard of the Boy Who Lived, but what about When Lightning Strikes?
That’s the buzzworthy pitch from Anna Klassen, who has officially made the cut for 2017’s Black List – an annual rundown of the best unproduced screenplays bouncing around Hollywood. Placing a laser focus on J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter), When Lightning Strikes has been described as the “true story of 25-year-old Joanne Rowling as she weathers first loves, unexpected pregnancies, lost jobs, and depression on her journey to create Harry Potter.” For the record, Klassen’s spec script also landed on the 2017 Hit List.
All of this has led to a groundswell of support for When Lightning Strikes, which will seemingly be more of an intimate, character-driven drama than the fantastical saga of witches and wizards that cemented J.K. Rowling’s name in the history books.

Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Last year’s chart-topper, the Madonna film Blonde Ambition by Elyse Hollander, was picked up by Universal Pictures and also in the top five was Liz Hannah’s The Post, which Steven Spielberg turned out quite fast. Today we have this year’s edition.
Topping the 2017 edition we have the post-wwii drama Ruin by Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo, which Gal Gadot is set to star in with direction by Macbeth and Snowtown‘s Justin Kurzel. Ask any fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe what his or her favorite film is and chances are good you won’t be hearing “Thor” or “Thor: The Dark World.” Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian god of thunder has worked much better as a wisecracking supporting player in the “Avengers” films than he has as the central hero in his standalone films. In fact, “Thor: The Dark World” is often cited as the worse Marvel film to date. Luckily, New Zealand director Taika Waititi is here to course correct the relationship between “Thor” and the big screen.
The first reactions for “Thor: Ragnarok” are in on social media, and they are universally glowing. Nearly every critic agrees “Ragnarok” is easily the best “Thor” movie out of the three standalone films, and Waititi is...

Two weeks out from release, the first reactions to Dunkirk are beginning to trickle onto the interwebs, and they all heap praise on Christopher Nolan’s “intense, heart-pounding” WWII epic.
Warner Bros. officially lifted the social embargo this afternoon, thereby opening the floodgates to a string of glowing, spoiler-free Tweets from some of the industry’s leading critics, who managed to catch an early screening of Nolan’s latest (and potentially greatest?) creative venture.
If you’ve somehow not seen any marketing material hitherto, here’s a refresher: Dunkirk centers on the historic evacuation of 1940, when 400,000 Allied troops were left stranded on the beaches of northern France. Surrounded by enemy forces, Nolan’s wartime epic unfolds on three fronts: land, air, and sea, and the filmmaker has spoken in the past about how Dunkirk‘s triptych storytelling template informs the experience. Visually speaking, the movie heralds a creative reunion with Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema,...
