Before we knew Justin Vernon as the force behind Bon Iver, he fronted DeYarmond Edison, a band formed along with his childhood friends Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, and Phil Cook. Those early recordings by the future indie rock heroes are now getting a proper release with Epoch, a comprehensive box set out August 18th on Jagjaguwar. You can hear a preview now with the single “As Long As I Can Go” b/w “Feel the Light,” along with a remastered version of their 2005 track “Bones.”
Epoch comprises 83 recordings — many of which are being heard outside the band for the very first time — across five LPs and four CDs, dating all the way back to 1998. Along with the music comes a 60,000-word biography from journalist/executive producer/self-described biggest fan Grayson Haver Currin, the collection captures DeYarmond Edison’s evolution from high school rockers who performed as Mount Vernon to their...

At the height of the pandemic, Jess Williamson found herself taking long walks with her neighbor Natalie Mering, who performs as Weyes Blood. “I had met her in passing over the years, but we didn’t know each other,” says Williamson. “We were podded up, and we got to be really good friends.” Venturing around Los Feliz with Mering’s Pomeranian, Luigi, the songwriters discussed their upcoming music and dating, even starting a group text titled Ho Support. “We’d talk about boys and sorcery,” Mering says. “Mostly boys.”

Suki Waterhouse is a little disappointed. The waiter is sorry to inform us that we’ve missed breakfast by six minutes. That means no blueberry pancakes or scrambled eggs. Waterhouse does, however, manage to wrangle us an off-the-menu delight: some toast with a little jam and butter. “It’s not quite lunchtime yet!”
The first hurdle in interviewing Suki Waterhouse is, well, what do you call her. The 30-year-old is best known as a model. Those bangs – chic-ly unkempt in the style of Sixties French icons Juliet Berto and Françoise Hardy – were made famous on the covers of Vogue and Tatler. These days, you’re more likely to see them swishing their way across a big screen opposite Lily Collins in a romcom or in Sam Levinson’s stylistic precursor to Euphoria (Assassination Nation). And she is a musician – one who has just come off tour with Father John Misty and released a debut album.

Just a year after his full-length debut was re-released by John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, singer-songwriter Tré Burt will be releasing his second full-length album this August. You, Yeah, You was recorded in Durham, North Carolina with producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, War on Drugs) and features contributions from Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Heath, Phil Cook, and Kelsey Waldon.
The album’s lead single is “Sweet Misery,” a gentle acoustic ballad that Burt wrote by first coming up with the song’s plaintive chord progression.

So, How Was Your 2020? is a series in which our favorite entertainers answer our questionnaire about the music, culture and memorable moments that shaped their year. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.
Brent Cobb spent the year making what he calls “country music for grown folks,” which is to say, country songs that are more about full hearts and open minds than empty beer cans and truck beds. In October, he released the album Keep ‘Em on They Toes, recorded with producer Brad Cook in Durham, North Carolina,...

Ani Difranco has dropped her new single “Revolutionary Love,” the title track from the singer-songwriter’s upcoming album.
“It’s about carrying the energy of love and compassion into the center of our social movements and making it the driving force,” Difranco said in a statement on the track, which was inspired by the political schism affecting the nation. “It’s about finding it within ourselves to stay curious about our opponents instead of shutting down.”

Ani Difranco encourages voting in the 2020 election in the new single “Do or Die.”
Directed by Zoë Boekbinder, the accompanying video opens with Difranco getting out of bed. “Do you ever just want to give up?” she sings. “Well, me too.” She shaves her head in her bathroom and embarks on a bike ride in New Orleans — where she encounters the local organizations Dancing Grounds and the New Orleans Dance Collective. They make a sign that says “Vote them out,” as Difranco sings in jazzy splendor: “We can do this...

Katie Crutchfield has always had a knack for noting subtle shifts in the weather. “I watch you anxiously/You paint it celestial, you paint it serene,” she sang over thrashing guitars on “Poison,” from 2015’s Ivy Tripp, making serenity sound like a death knell. On her latest album Saint Cloud, the 31-year-old songwriter trades in the indie-rock neurosis of her previous work for a mellower, twangy sound that nods towards her roots in Birmingham, Alabama. But her piercing observations have only grown sharper with time: “I have a gift, I’ve been told,...

Hiss Golden Messenger, the musical project from singer-songwriter Mc Taylor, will release a new album, Terms of Surrender, September 20th via Merge. The group has shared the first track off the release, a politically-inspired folk song called “I Need a Teacher.” The track is accompanied by a music video from director D.L. Anderson, which showcases the real-life teachers who demonstrated in North Carolina against cuts to public education last year. Taylor wrote on Twitter, “I wanted to create a portrait of the people that put their lives on the line for our kids every day.

Bon Iver released the two new songs, “Hey Ma” and “U (Man Like),” which they played over the Pa system following their headlining set at All Points East in London this weekend.
The studio version of “Hey Ma” arrives one year after the band premiered the track during their set at Bonnaroo 2018. The track boasts a characteristically serene mix of synths that drift along until they’re eventually buoyed by marching drums, which eventually fall away as the song floats towards the end. “Full time, you talk your money up,...

Bruce Hornsby invited Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to join him in the studio for a serene new song, “Cast-Off,” that will appear on his upcoming album, Absolute Zero. The record, which also features contributions from yMusic, Blake Mills and Jack DeJohnette, among others, is due out April 12th.
