Chennai, May 14 (Ians) Chennai Super Kings captain M.S. Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first against Kolkata Knight Riders in Match No.61 of Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
A win for Chennai will boost their chance of a top-two finish in the points table and become the first team to qualify for the playoffs. It will also seal their return to Chepauk, who will be hosting Qualifier 1 and Eliminator on May 23 and 24.
For Kolkata, who have 10 points from 12 matches, it is a must-win game to keep their Playoffs hopes alive.
After winning the toss, Dhoni said Chennai are fielding an unchanged playing eleven. “We’ve been slightly uncertain about the wicket, and as the tournament has progressed the pitch gets slow.”

Chennai, May 14 (Ians) Former India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan feels that the Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) management needs to think over the future of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell in the franchise, especially with the duo not performing at their best consistently.
In Ipl 2023, off-spinner Narine has picked only seven wickets in 12 matches, at an economy rate of 8.50, which is the worst for him in an Ipl season, apart from falling returns with the bat, resulting in him not being a pinch-hitting opening option anymore.
Russell, meanwhile, has scored only 218 runs in 12 innings at a strike-rate of 150.34. He has taken only seven wickets in 12 matches, at an economy rate of 11.29, the worst for him in participating in the tournament, apart from carrying constant concerns over his bowling fitness.
“We should see how Narine and Russell have performed in the last three years, or how many match-winning performances they have put in with bat or ball.

Kolkata, May 12 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals’ English star Jos Buttler has been fined 10 percent of his match fee by the Indian Premier League (Ipl) Governing Council for breaching the Ipl Code of Conduct during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Thursday night.
Buttler had to sacrifice his wicket for his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal who went on to slam a 13-ball half-century on his way to an unbeaten 98 as Rajasthan Royals thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders by 9 wickets.
Jaiswal’s 98 not out and 48 not out by skipper Sanju Samson helped Rajasthan Royals reach 151/1 in 13.1 overs after their bowlers, led by Yuzvendra Chahal’s 4-25, did brilliantly well to restrict the Kkr to 149/8 after the hosts were asked to bat first at the Eden Gardens.

Kolkata, May 9 (Ians) Kolkata Knight Riders’ all-rounder Andre Russell expressed that the fearless batting displayed by Rinku Singh has helped alleviate the pressure as the duo sealed a thrilling victory against Punjab Kings (Pbks) at Eden Gardens.
Chasing 180, Kolkata needed 26 needed in two overs, Russell delivered big time smashing Sam Curran for 3 sixes in the 19th over to bring down the equation to just 7 of the last 6 balls.
Pbks pacer Arshdeep Singh held his nerves and created immense pressure as Russell was run out in the penultimate ball trying to sneak in a cheeky signal. With 2 needed off the final ball, Rinku found the fine-leg boundary and pulled off the nail-biter with a five-wicket victory.
“I wanted to finish the game off, but we have a finisher this year in Rinku. He had told me what if the ball beats you, should we go for the run? I said for sure,...

Kolkata, April 23 (Ians) Maheesh Theekshana and Tushar Deshpande took two wickets each Chennai Super Kings restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 186/8 in defence of a mammoth 235 and win by 49 runs at Eden Gardens to move to the top of the points table.
After Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube struck half-centuries and carted Kolkata’s bowlers all over the park in posting the highest Ipl total at this venue, where they were greeted by a sea of yellow in the stands, Jason Roy and Rinku Singh struck valiant half-centuries for Kkr.
But they were not enough to chase down a massive total as Kolkata slumped to their fourth straight defeat in the competition. With Roy not coming out to bat after seemingly injuring his ankle while trying to save a boundary, Sunil Narine was sent to open. But Akash Singh took him out on the fourth ball by uprooting his off-stump.

New Delhi, April 21 (Ians) Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) skipper Nitish Rana admitted he should have stayed longer at the crease during their batting collapse against Delhi Capitals in Ipl 2023 while taking responsibility for the sides four-wicket loss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday.
In the match which began after a rain delay, Ishant Sharma, Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each as Delhi bowled out Kolkata for just 127. For Kolkata, Rana, along with Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, and Mandeep Singh fell without any notable contribution, with Jason R’y’s 43 and Andre Russell’s 38 not out taking the side to 127.
“We were 15-20 runs short, and we knew the wicket wasn’t easy. I should have batted longer, and at that time, my wicket was crucial. I take the responsibility for this; I should have stood there,” said Rana after the game ended.

New Delhi, April 21 (Ians) An impressive show by bowlers followed by skipper David Warner’s vital fifty (57 off 41) guided Delhi Capitals their first win of the season, beating Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) by four wickets in a rain delayed Ipl 2023 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, here on Thursday.
On the back of Axar Patel (2/13), Kuldeep Yadav (2/15) Ishant Sharma (2/19) and Anrich Nortje’ (2/20) superb show, DC bowled out Kkr for paltry 127 in 20 overs. Jason Roy’s gritty innings of 43 off 39 and Andre Russell’s 38 not out off 31 were the saving grace for Kkr, who lost wickets at regular intervals.
In reply, Warner gave DC a brilliant start, then Kkr spinners turned the tables in the middle overs but eventually the hosts sealed the win with three balls to spare to open their account.
Chasing 128, Delhi were off to a strong start with skipper David Warner hitting 10 boundaries out of 12 in the powerplay.

New Delhi, April 20 (Ians) A disciplined bowling performance by Axar Patel (2/13), Kuldeep Yadav (2/15) Ishant Sharma (2/19) and Anrich Nortje (2/20) helped Delhi Capitals (DC) bowl out Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) for paltry 127 in a rain delayed Ipl 2023 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, here on Thursday.
Kkr had a dismal show with the bat as only three batters managed to touch the double-digit mark in front of DC’s impressive bowling display. Roy’s gritty innings of 43 off 39 and Russell’s 38 not out off 31 were the saving grace for Kkr, who lost wickets at regular intervals.
Put into bat first, Kkr lost three wickets within the powerplay. Ishant Sharma began the attack well, giving away just five runs off the opening over.

Melbourne, Nov 25 (Ians) Just two days after he was released from his New Zealand central contract, veteran opener Martin Guptill has joined Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming season of the Big Bash League (Bbl).
Guptill becomes the third player from New Zealand to land a Bbl contract after left-arm pacer Trent Boult was drafted by Melbourne Stars through the inaugural overseas player draft in August and pace all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme retired from international cricket to play for Adelaide Strikers.
“I’m excited to be joining the Renegades and am looking forward to being part of the Big Bash this season. This is a new challenge for me and it will be nice to call Melbourne home for the summer. I’ll be trying to make as many runs as I can to help drive the Renegades back up the ladder and push for team success,” said Guptill on his association with the club.

Melbourne, Nov 22 (Ians) England all-rounder and T20 specialist Liam Livingstone has pulled out of the upcoming edition of Australia’s Big Bash League (Bbl) for Melbourne Renegades because of increased international workload.
The Renegades were expecting the 29-year-old to be available for the first eight matches of the tournament, beginning on December 13, but have been left “disappointed” by the decision.
A statement issued by the Renegades said on Tuesday, “The Melbourne Renegades can confirm Liam Livingstone has withdrawn from Bbl-12. Melbourne, Sep 2 (Ians) Power-hitter Tim David’s selection in the Australian squad for the Icc T20 World Cup in their backyard hasn’t come as a surprise for those who had been following his progress ever since he was donning Singapore colours in international cricket.
On Thursday, Cricket Australia (CA) made the decision to include the 26-year-old player in their 15-member squad for their T20 World Cup title defence, a move which caught the cricket fraternity unawares, given that the Kangaroos are not known to include newcomers so early.
Following the cricketer not figuring in Singapore’s squads for T20 World Cup Qualifier B and the Challenge League earlier this year, David made the switch to the country he has called home. His starring role with the Singapore national team brought him into prominence. His strike rate of 158.52 and an average of 46.50 was something that caught the eye, and his...

Manchester, Aug 22 (Ians) England white-ball captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of The Hundred due to a calf injury he picked up last Thursday (August 18) against Southern Brave.
Buttler, who is captain of Manchester Originals in the competition, will take no further part in The Hundred, according to local media reports.
Laurie Evans will now captain the side for the remainder of the competition from the match against Birmingham Phoenix on Sunday, said a report in the Sky Sports website.

Meanwhile, West Indies pacer Andre Russell too will take no further part in The Hundred. Russell has returned home to take part in the Caribbean Premier League.

St John's (Antigua), May 29 (Ians) West Indies cricket stars who are part of Indian Premier League (Ipl) as well as South Africans Faf du Plessis, Chris Morris and Imran Tahir may have a hard time choosing between Caribbean Premier League (Cpl) and Ipl after they were included in Cpl squads late on Friday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) on Saturday announced that the suspended Ipl will be completed in the mid-September-mid-October window in the UAE. The Cpl, on the other hand, will be held between August 28 and September 19 in the West Indies. The Ipl-contracted players will finish Cpl assignment in the Caribbean and take a long journey to the UAE for the Ipl.
Though a likely bubble-to-bubble transfer will ensure that players arriving in the UAE don't have to quarantine, the long journey is likely to tire out the Cpl players and give some of the players,...

St John's (Antigua), May 29 (Ians) West Indies cricket stars who make up a chunk of superstars in Indian Premier League (Ipl) as well as South Africans Faf du Plessis and Chris Morris may have a hard time choosing between Caribbean Premier League (Cpl) and Ipl after they were included in Cpl squads late on Friday.
The suspended Ipl is likely to resume and get completed during mid-September to mid-October window while the Cpl will be held between August 28 and September 19 in the West Indies. The players will finish Cpl assignment and take a long journey to UAE to get to Ipl.
Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) is negotiating bubble-to-bubble transfer with UAE authorities so that the arriving players don't have to quarantine, the long journey is likely to tire them out and give some of the players, who will represent national teams no rest prior to T20 World Cup assignment.

New Delhi, Jan 6 (Ians) West Indies' ranking in T20 Internationals does not reflect how good the team actually is, according to wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran. Pooran said that West Indies are often lacking their biggest stars during bilateral series, which in turn hurts their results.
West Indies are the reigning champions in the T20 World Cup and the only team to have won the tournament more than once. However, they are ranked a lowly 10th on the International Cricket Council's rankings for the shortest format of the game.
"Personally, I am looking forward to the T20 World Cup [to be held in 2021 in India]. As a team, our strength is T20s. For the last couple of times, we've been doing good in World Cups, but as a team where we are ranked [10th], it doesn't show how good our team actually is," Pooran said in a virtual press conference hosted by the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Mumbai, Nov 23 (Ians) Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) should release the likes of Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik while letting 21-year-old batsman Shubman Gill take over as the captain, former India batsman Aakash Chopra said on Monday.
"In my opinion, Kolkata Knight Riders should not retain too many players. I will take only three names -- Shubman Gill, Andre Russell and Varun Chakravarthy. They should retain the three of them and make Shubman Gill the captain. I am thinking ahead, just like the Delhi Capitals did with Shreyas Iyer. So Kkr should groom Gill for a better future," he said.
"If Kkr is seeing any captaincy material in Shubman Gill, then they will not get the chance again. If they let him go to another team, then Shubman Gill might do for that team what Rohit Sharma has done for Mumbai," he added.
