A member of a Ku Klux Klan unit in Alabama, he was arrested for the murder of civil-rights worker Viola Liuzzo in Alabama in 1965. He was tried in a state court and acquitted, but was convicted in a federal court of conspiracy to violate Mrs. Liuzzo's civil rights, and sentenced to ten years in prison. He was released after seven.
