This list contains series that will brighten up even the most difficult everyday life. At the same time, each of them is not an empty trinket, suitable only for wasting time and forgetting, but an individual and stylish project, made with real wit and screenwriting skill.
1. Veep, 2012-2019
Few mock politics as blatantly as Armando Iannucci's satirical sitcom. The show mocks not only the main character, Selina Meyer, but also her hapless team trying to keep Selina in power. As the show progresses, Meyer becomes President of the US, but does not stay in that position for long.
Veep is, of course, a show for those who love when jokes are delivered at machine-gun speed, the morals of political managers are mocked in the most merciless way, and political reality appears as a series of paradoxes.
2. BoJack Horseman, 2014-2020

Sffilm has announced the winners of the juried Golden Gate Awards competition and the Audience Awards at the 67th San Francisco International Film Festival (Sffilm Festival). The awards serve as a launching pad for internationally renowned filmmakers who are early in their careers, and they qualify films under 40 minutes for the Oscars. Past Golden Gate Award winners include Panah Panahi, Reid Davenport, Nadav Lapid, Marlon Riggs, Céline Sciamma, Jia Zhang-ke, Stanley Nelson, and Tasha Van Zandt.
This year, the 2024 Sffilm Festival ran five days from April 24 – 28 rather than its usual sprawling two weeks. The Sffilm board opted to pull back conservatively where others would have gone bigger to keep a more expansive footprint. Altogether they brought in 130 filmmakers this year, an excellent global selection of films despite the calendar disadvantage of being caught between Sundance and Cannes.

J.J. Abrams' 2013 film "Star Trek Into Darkness" was a parallel universe retread of Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." In Abrams' movie, the central villain, Khan Noonien Singh, was played by Benedict Cumberbatch, while in Meyer's film, Khan was played by Ricardo Montalbán. Both films feature the death of Kirk and/or Spock, and both films feature the survivor yelling "Khaaaaan!" The plots of the films differ, however, as Khan remains the central villain of the 1982 film, while he was supplanted by a vengeful Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) in "Into Darkness."
Both films also feature Dr. Carol Marcus, a paramour of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine in "Into Darkness" and William Shatner in "Wrath of Khan"). In "Star Trek Into Darkness," Dr. Marcus was played by Alice Eve, taking over for Bibi Besch in "Wrath of Khan." Because the characters in "Into Darkness" are...

You know your movie’s a failure when it’s been bested by Morbius, but that’s where Madame Web has found itself. The critically panned movie is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a franchise which doesn’t seem to include the web-slinger, but some recently released Madame Web concept art does feature Tom Holland’s Spider-Man battling Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahims).
Concept artist Sebastian Meyer, who has worked on movies such as Doctor Strange, Star Trek Beyond, Aquaman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and more, revealed a series of Madame Web illustrations, some of which include Spider-Man.
You can check out the rest of Meyer’s wonderful Madame Web concept art on his site. Of course, Spider-Man didn’t appear in Madame Web, but it was once rumoured that Sony wanted to include the character.

In 1977, aspiring cartoonist Matt Groening moved from his hometown of Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer. Like most people who move to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer, he took on some of the most menial jobs imaginable. Groening worked in a sewage treatment plant, as a dishwasher, and as a waiter. All the while, Groening worked on what would become his signature creation, the "Life in Hell" comic strip.
Groening would leave "Life in Hell" comics in a small corner of Licorice Pizza, the celebrated Los Angeles record store where he occasionally worked. It was an embittered strip about modern life, a harsh critique of life, love, school, and work. Groening attacked everything the establishment celebrated as normal and good, finding nothing but misery in the real world.
"Life in Hell" was picked up by Wet Magazine and, later the Los Angeles Reader.

After weeks of twists and turns, Jeopardy! has finally crowned the winner of the 2024 Tournament of Champions.
Yogesh Raut towered above the competition throughout the finals, and his third victory allowed him to take the overall win.
Tuesday’s shocking episode featured the power going back and forth between him and Troy Meyer.
Ben Chan, who turned in another strong showing throughout the Tournament of Champions, struggled to keep up the pace.
Ultimately, Raut’s win came after he pulled ahead of Meyer when his opponent got the answer wrong at the start of Final Jeopardy!
Raut’s win secured him a healthy $250,000 prize and an entry in the upcoming Jeopardy! Masters tournament.
Changes are on the horizon for Jeopardy!

The show must go on… for at least one more night, that is. Jeopardy!‘s Tournament of Champions continued on Monday, March 18, and ended in a runaway that notched another much-needed victory for one of the finalists. Coming into night five of the tournament, Ben Chan had an edge over fellow contestants Yogesh Raut and Troy Meyer with two wins to their single victories (making him one away from taking the whole shebang and notching a spot in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2). However, the other players were far from out of the running, and after this episode, he’s got some real competition to speak of as it’s a match point for not one but two contestants. Right from the start, things seemed to be going Raut’s way, as he earned $8,800 to Chan’s $4,800 and Meyer’s $3,600 in the first round. It was the second round, however, that really...

After a long wait, the U.S.S. Enterprise has received a response from the planet Eminiar VII. They had hoped to contact the planet and establish diplomatic relations with the inhabitants in the star cluster. But the message they receive in return is simple: stay away.
When Kirk gets that reply, he intends to respects their wishes. But no sooner does he order the Enterprise to change course than a man arrives on the bridge and overrides Kirk. This moment must have shocked the first viewers of “A Taste of Armageddon” from the first season of The Original Series of Star Trek. After all, who could override the Captain on his own ship?
The answer is the United Federation of Planets, for whom the man, Ambassador Robert Fox (Gene Lyons), works. Although “A Taste of Armageddon” aired in 1967, the distinction between Starfleet and the Federation still confuses viewers today.

Believe it or not, those who have read the Twilight Saga find that the books are not as steamy as the movies portray. The movies took a step ahead to show that aspect of Edward and Bella’s relationship, and although many fans didn’t complain, there was something that didn’t sit right with Kristen Stewart, who was very particular and consistent with the guidelines that maintain a PG-13 rating.

It’s not over ’til it’s over, and Friday night’s Jeopardy! contestants found that out the hard way. The episode, which aired on March 15, featured three finalists as part of its 31st Tournament of Champions series: Yogesh Raut, Troy Meyer, and Ben Chan. Coming into day four of the tournament, each of these players had already tallied one victory, but now one contestant has notched a second win, which makes him one more win away from clinching a total victory (and a spot on Jeopardy! Masters Season 2). Throughout the night, Chan trailed his fellow contestants by a wide margin. After the Jeopardy! round, he had under $2,000 and half as many correct answers as Raut and Meyer. His fortune improved a bit in Double Jeopardy!, but he still trailed the others going into Final Jeopardy! with $12,800 to Meyer’s $33,200 and Raut’s $20,400. Still, it wasn’t a runaway, so...

Jeopardy! is usually very careful and thorough when it comes to the wording of its clues, but one particular question about The Simpsons on Thursday’s (March 14) game contained a mistake. In the third game of the Tournament of Champions finals, which saw pro-quizzer Troy Meyer battling it out wit Ben Chan and Yogesh Raut, the contestants were faced with a category titled “Real Names of Unreal People.” Chan selected the $600 under the category, which read, “Robert Underdunk Terwilliger is the real name of this vengeful The Simpsons character.” Meyer, who won Wednesday’s (March 13) game in dominant fashion, quickly buzzed in and correctly guessed Sideshow Bob. However, it turned out the Jeopardy! clue writers had misspelled the name of the infamous Simpsons villain. Jeopardy, Inc! After a fan on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out the name is actually “Onderdonk,” former Simpsons writer Bill Oakley jumped in to confirm that,...

It’s hard to put into words the kind of the disappointment that comes with realising that one of your favourite filmmakers has made a truly terrible movie. That realisation hit me approximately 10 minutes into Drive-Away Dolls, the new film by one half of acclaimed filmmaking duo The Coen Brothers.
Alongside his brother Joel, Ethan Coen has given us more than 4 decades of brilliant films ranging from quirky black comedies – A Serious Man, Hail, Caesar!, Inside Llewyn Davis – to beautifully devised crime capers – Blood Simple, No Country for Old Men and True Grit being just a few – but recently the prolific brothers took a break from working together. This resulted in Joel Coen’s multi-awarded nominated The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021, and the soon to be released chaotic lesbian sexploitation comedy Drive-Away Dolls from his brother Ethan.

Jeopardy! super-champ Troy Meyer first revealed his mother, Cheryl, had passed away on his original appearance on the show in January 2023, and he paid tribute to her again on Wednesday’s (March 13) episode of Tournament of Champions. The music executive from Tampa, Florida, rocked up to Wednesday’s game wearing a very special cardigan, one that held deep sentimental value to the professional quizzer. “Tell us about the sweater; that is a choice,” host Ken Jennings said of the black and white patterned cardigan. “Thanks for the compliment,” Meyer replied with a laugh. “So, my late mother worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in Cleveland for a long time. And, they probably wouldn’t want me to talk about this on TV, [but] one thing the salespeople would do is hide stuff in their drawers until it went on sale.” An emotional Meyer continued, “And so my mom hid this for six months for me.

Only $1 separated first and second place on Tuesday night’s (March 12) episode of Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions, after Yogesh Raut made a critical error in Final Jeopardy. The first game of the Toc finals kicked off with Raut, a psychologist from Vancouver, Washington, taking on the formidable Troy Meyer, a music executive from Tampa, Florida, and fan favorite Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Raut started on the back foot after being completely shut out on the buzzer in the first half of the opening round. But he found his timing in the second half, answering nine clues correctly, only one behind Chan, who answered ten correctly and led with $6,000. It was Meyer’s time to shine in Double Jeopardy, as he found both Daily Doubles, answering the first one correctly and giving him a substantial lead. Jeopardy!‘s chaotic Tournament of Champions has its semifinalists after Wednesday’s (March 6) last quarterfinal game, which saw Troy Meyer cement himself as the potential new frontrunner. Meyer, a music executive and professional quizzer from Tampa, Florida, who won six games during Season 39, returned to the Alex Trebek Stage with a point to prove. He was up against Sean McShane, a tour guide from South Boston, Massachusetts, and Deb Bilodeau, a restaurant server from San Francisco, California. While other favorites like Cris Pannullo, Hannah Wilson, and Juveria Zaheer were knocked out of the competition early, Meyer lived up to expectations with a dominant performance. Meyer took an early lead in the first round, answering 14 clues correctly and amassing $7,000. He then leveled up in Double Jeopardy, finding and successfully answering both Daily Doubles, which put him in a runaway position with more than a third of the round still to play.

Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster Twilight franchise is heading to the small screen, and here are the details.
There was a time in the early 2010s when Twilight was just about the biggest film franchise around.
It comprises five films – 2008’s Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, 2009’s New Moon, directed by Chris Weitz, 2010’s Eclipse, directed by David Slade, and the two part finale Breaking Dawn, directed by Bill Condon and released in 2011 and 2012. Their success was such that two parody films were also released in quick succession, the much maligned Vampire’s Suck and Breaking Wind.
The films followed Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan as she becomes romantically involved with vampire Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson, and werewolf Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner. Which all leads to a battle with vampire coven The Volturi.
Adapted by future Jessica Jones creator Melissa Rosenberg, the large ensemble cast also included Billy Burke,...

Your scent. It's like a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin. Or perhaps it's just that Lionsgate simply refuses to let sleeping dogs (shape-shifters?) lie, even now that we're more than a decade removed from the peak of "Twilight" fever. The studio has already revealed its intention to reboot Stephenie Meyer's YA fantasy romance phenomenon for the small screen as a TV series, which begs the question: how exactly does it plan to go about trying to rebottle the "stupid lightning in a stupid bottle" that was the original movie adaptations of Meyer's books, to quote /Film's Bj Colangelo? We now have part of the answer and, incredibly enough, it's not at all a bad idea.

In 2023, it was announced that a Twilight reboot TV series was in the works at Lionsgate, and now the company is offering more background on the latest adaptation of Stephenie Meyer‘s best-selling book series. Instead of envisioning a live-action remake, Lionsgate is opting to take the animated route for this television venture. The show is being shopped around with a John Wick offshoot which Lionsgate’s Vice Chairman Michael Burns revealed during a Q&a at the Morgan Stanley media conference, according to Deadline. “We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that,” Burns said. More than a decade has gone by since the Twilight Saga ran its course on the big screen, with five movies telling the story of the four books in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. So, of course, Lionsgate is working to figure out ways to revive the franchise. While there are some side stories and reimaginings that could still be brought to the screen, it doesn’t seem like they’re interested in greenlighting any of those projects. Last year, it was announced that a Twilight TV series was in development – and now Variety has confirmed that Lionsgate Television is shopping around a small screen version of the story – not as a live-action show, but an animated series!

Based on Stephenie Meyer’s book series, the popular Twilight film franchise is soon headed to the small screen with an animated television series project, Variety reports this week.

It was first announced back in 2023 that Lionsgate was looking to bring Twilight to the small screen, but at the time we assumed the project would be a live action TV series.

Even if you don’t know an El-Aurian from an Illyrian, even if you can’t tell the original Enterprise from the Enterprise-D, you’re probably familiar with one of the fundamental rules of Star Trek: redshirts always die.
Unlike many of the popular misconceptions about the series, the redshirt stereotype does have grounding in the show. Over the course of three seasons in The Original Series, 26 characters wearing red tunics died, as opposed to 15 wearing gold and blue combined. But that trend stopped with the Star Trek movies, and continued to fall away with The Next Generation and the spinoffs that followed.
Why, you ask? Because the costume colors signify a crewman’s role on their particular ship, and the color scheme changed between Tos and Tng.
Although some Trekkies hate to admit it, Star Trek didn’t really have much in the way of canon in its first few episodes.

Although some Trekkies hate to admit it, Star Trek didn’t really have much in the way of canon in its first few episodes.

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a drama series based on the comic book “El Gato Negro” by Richard Dominguez, Variety has learned.
The series, currently titled “El Gato,” will be shot in both English and Spanish. Diego Boneta is attached to star, with Eric Carrasco adapting the comic book for the screen.
“Sharing ‘El Gato’ with audiences around the world is a dream come true,” says Boneta. “This has been a passion of mine since I started Three Amigos. Eric Carrasco and the entire team have built a character and universe that honors the super hero genre and still feels completely epic and original. It is an absolute honor to play Frank and produce this with my amazing partners at Amazon, MGM, and all other producers on this epic story. Get ready for a wild ride.”

A long-developing comic book series starring Diego Boneta has found a home at Amazon’s Prime Video.
The tech giant’s streaming service has ordered El Gato, based on the comic El Gato Negro by Richard Dominguez. Boneta (Luis Miguel: The Series, the 2022 Father of the Bride) will play the title character in the thriller, a man who finds himself at the center of a vast conspiracy when he discovers his father was a 1970s vigilante, “El Gato.”
The project was initially set up at Apple TV+ more than four years ago, with Boneta attached. At the time, Robert Rodriguez was in line to direct and executive produce, but he’s no longer involved. El Gato Negro comes from Amazon MGM Studios — MGM was behind the show before Amazon acquired it — and creator Eric Carrasco (Foundation, Supergirl, Netflix’s upcoming Twilight of the Gods), who will executive produce and...

Kristen Stewart is revealing just how little the studio behind “Twilight” knew about the lustful YA novel it was adapted from.
The “Love Lies Bleeding” star and “Spencer” Oscar nominee shared during a Rolling Stone cover story that the 2008 film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, had studio pressure to be a “movie for kids” despite the saucy subject matter. While Stewart did not name the studio executives, the rights to the “Twilight” novel were acquired by Summit Entertainment, who distributed the feature film.
Robert Pattinson starred in the “Twilight” films as undead vampire Edward Cullen who becomes obsessed with high schooler Bella Swan (Stewart), who in turn wishes to be killed and transformed into a vampire to forever be with Edward.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
A love triangle ensues between the tumultuously toxic couple and Bella’s family friend Jacob, a werewolf played by Taylor Lautner.

E.L. James' original "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy is undoubtedly the most successful piece of fanfiction ever published. James turned the teen-friendly romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular "Twilight" franchise into an erotic reverie explored by the mysterious (and quite wealthy) entrepreneur Christian Grey and college journalist Kate Kavanaugh. It was a Bdsm gateway drug that opened up a healthy portal for kink-curious young adults. You didn't have to feel like a freak for wanting to do what conservative society deemed freaky.
Was it good literature? Does it matter? James' novels have sold hundreds of millions of copies and been translated into 52 different languages. They are adored by people who never knew they wanted to see Bella and Edward engage in consensual sadomasochism. I am happy they have these stories in their lives. What matters, at least when it comes to my bailiwick,...

Nicholas Meyer's well-regarded 1982 sci-fi film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is all about failure. It begins with Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) looking down the barrel of middle age, having to acknowledge that he's likely past his prime. His eyesight is failing, and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) prescribes old-fashioned glasses. As the film progresses, we learn that Kirk has an adult son named David (Merritt Butrick) that he wasn't present to raise, and an old enemy, Khan (Ricardo Montalbán), whom he had left on Ceti Alpha V decades ago and had completely forgotten about.
Kirk tells a story of taking a test in Starfleet Academy called the Kobayashi Maru, a test that is designed to make the subject fail; it's meant to gauge a student's command acumen in a no-win scenario. Kirk so wanted to win that he changed the test, effectively cheating. He had, audiences learn, never...

One of the themes this year at the Film by the Sea festival in Vlissingen was "films based on literature". And one of the International Premieres being shown as part of this theme is Thomas Stuber's Dark Satellites, based on Clemens Meyer's German-language novel 'Die Stillen Trabanten'. The book is a bundle of short stories which follow several people in the city of Leipzig, all solitary, all suddenly confronted with their loneliness by meeting unlikely soulmates. Stuber, with Meyer's help on the script, adapted three of those stories for his film version. The end result is a well acted, but very leaden and melancholy look at humanity and relationships. We see security guard Erik, who during his nightly rounds keeps meeting the young Ukrainian refugee...

ProtestActors joined demonstrations by writers who had been marching for over two months. Meanwhile, a German actors association representative expressed solidarity as the Berlin premiere of "Barbie" was set to go on actorless.TwitterFor the first time in 63 years, Hollywood actors joined screenwriters on picket lines on Friday, July 14, in what has become Tinseltown's biggest labor fight in decades. Actors and writers had been negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for higher streaming-era pay and curbs on the use of artificial intelligence. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis, Rosario Dawson, starring in the upcoming Star Wars: Ahsoka and Allison Janney of The West Wing fame, were among the more famous members of SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, to demonstrate. The striking actors joined thousands of members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), who walked off sets at the beginning of May. The last time Hollywood saw...

Gas up the Learjets and break out the Moncler vests, it’s time for corporate chieftains to let their hair down, as only the one percent of the one percent knows how.
Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg, Warner Bros. Discovery honcho David Zaslav, Paramount Global chair Shari Redstone, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Apple head Tim Cook, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates are heading to Idaho in July to attend the annual “summer camp for moguls,” known more formally as Sun Valley. And Bob Iger, back on the throne at the Walt Disney Company, will also be touching down in the resort town after a brief, unhappy (for shareholders) interregnum. They’ll be mixing and mingling with other media barons, Silicon Valley heavyweights and political players at the media finance retreat hosted by Allen & Co.
