She studied history at Newnham College, Cambridge, before training as an archaeologist in France after WWI. She enrolled at Oxford University in 1921, where she earned a degree in anthropology. She became famous for her excavations in Gibraltar, where she discovered a rare skull of a Neanderthal child, and in the Middle East.
