Peaky Blinders’ Helen McCrory, Poirot’s David Suchet and U.S. comedian Cristela Alonzo are lending their voices to HBO and BBC drama His Dark Materials.
The trio are among those to sign up as voice actors for the the Philip Pullman adaptation, written by Jack Thorne and produced by Bad Wolf.
The first season of His Dark Materials follows Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, searching for a kidnapped friend. She uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets a determined and courageous boy called Will (Amir Wilson). Together they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands. Peter Capaldi is to star in a Mark Gatiss-penned ghost story for the BBC. The Doctor Who star is to feature in Martin’s Close, an adaptation of the M.R. James story, for BBC Four alongside Wilf Scolding, Simon Williams, Sara Crowe, Fisayo Akinade and Elliot Levey.
Written by Doctor Who and Sherlock writer Gatiss, who also starred in Game of Thrones, the story follows the murder trial of John Martin. It is presented as a report of the trial in 1684, where Martin has been accused of murdering a young girl named Ann Clark, with whom he had a one-sided romance. The prosecution presents the case that Martin murdered Ann Clark, because she ruined a good marriage proposal for him. Gentleman Jack, the period drama fronted by Doctor Foster’s Suranne Jones, will debut on HBO on Monday April 22 – marking one of the first scripted series to play in the new premium broadcaster’s new slot.
The series, which is a co-production with the BBC, is created, written and co-directed by Happy Valley’s Sally Wainwright. It will join series including mini-series Chernobyl, Catherine The Great , His Dark Materials and the final season of The Deuce in the newly opened 10pm Monday slot.
