One might say Poor Things is an epic culmination for Ed Guiney: It’s a film ten years in the making that lurked in the shadows of the producer’s three other collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos (the duo also has a fifth project on the horizon: Kinds of Kindness).
Based on a novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things is Lanthimos’ biggest movie yet. Vivid screenwriting from Tony McNamara is brought to life by vibrant sets, costumes and music with acclaimed performances from Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef and Willem Dafoe. The film took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and garnered 11 Oscar nominations last month, the second most of any film behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
For Guiney, Poor Things has been a decade-long thrill ride on Lanthimos’ fantastical roller coaster. “His worlds are so extraordinary, his imagination is so compelling,...

“Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,” formats “Upside Down” and “Shaolin Heroes” and premium doc feature “Front Row,” offering a novel take on the Ukraine War, are potential highlights on Banijay’s powerhouse lineup at what promises to be one of the biggest presentations at next week’s London TV Screenings.
Mixing third-party pick-ups and Banijay productions, further scripted titles take in second seasons of two Banijay hits, the sumptuous and revisionist “Marie Antoinette,” and “Rogue Heroes,” a big WWII special ops adventure story which hit high ratings on BBC.
Unspooling over Wednesday Feb. 28 at BAFTA in three sessions, dedicated to factual, scripted and then formats, the Banijay@BAFTA lineup, as last year, the spread will give audiences a chance to catch up with high-concept adventure reality “The Summit” and “Deal or No Deal Island,” described as an “epic” recast of the format.

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.
However, they won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay, over “Cold War” (Janusz Głowacki and Paweł Pawlikowski), “Green Book,” “Roma” (Alfonso Cuarón), and “Vice” (Adam McKay). The film won six other BAFTAs in total,...

“Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” all received Best Adapted Screenplay bids from the Critics Choice Awards thus giving their Oscar hopes in this category a timely boost. Some of them were lauded even further at the Golden Globes, which nominated “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” alongside “Barbie,” “Past Lives,” and “Anatomy of Fall” in a combined Best Screenplay category.
So, those are the preferences of those two awards groups. But what about the tastes of the academy? Well, below is a chart detailing the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Adapted Screenplay. We’re going to break this down to see what the academy likes and try to apply the findings to this year’s race.

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Favourite” scored 10 Oscar nominations in 2019, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director for Lanthimos and a Best Actress win for Olivia Colman. Stone and Lanthimos reunite this year for “Poor Things,” which could be set to have an even better year at the Oscars than their previous film did.
“Poor Things,” from Searchlight Pictures, follows Emma Stone as Bella, who is brought back to life by Willem Dafoe‘s doctor. Bella then goes on a journey of self-discovery, aided and hindered alike by the likes of Mark Ruffalo‘s caddish lawyer and Ramy Youssef‘s hopeful suitor. The movie, which releases in US theaters on December 8, has received exquisite reviews and a near-perfect score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, we are predicting “Poor Things” to have a rich year at the upcoming Academy Awards. Here’s a full list of the categories we think...

Emma Stone delivers a powerhouse performance in Yorgos Lanthimos‘ latest hit, “Poor Things.” The Searchlight Pictures production, which releases in US theaters on December 8, showcases Stone as Bella Baxter, a re-animated woman on a quest to discover life and herself. Willem Dafoe‘s scientist brings her back to life while Ramy Youssef and Mark Ruffalo feature as helpers and hinderers in her exploration of life.
But the movie belongs to Stone, who reunites with Lanthimos after they worked together on “The Favourite.” She is once more saying the words of Tony McNamara, who co-wrote “The Favourite” with Deborah Davis and Stone’s “Cruella” with Dana Fox. Stone’s performance has been touted as one of the very best of her career by many critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) declared that Stone will “blow your mind” in the movie, writing: “Nothing overshadows Stone’s odd, amusing and affecting performance as Bella,...

It’s been five years since idiosyncratic filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos had his big Oscars breakthrough with “The Favourite,” which earned 10 nominations, and pulled off an upset in a Best Actress with Olivia Colman prevailing over Glenn Close. Success hasn’t tempered his adventurous spirit, though, as evidenced by his follow-up, “Poor Things,” which premiered to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival on September 1. “Poor Things” could well reap double digit Oscar bids too (more on that below).

Paramount+ and Tving‘s Korean series “Bargain” has won the critics’ choice award at the Seriencamp Festival in Cologne. In April, “Bargain” became the first-ever Korean series to win best screenplay at the Canneseries Festival in France.
The series stars actors Jun Jong-seo (“Money Heist: Korea”) and Jin Seon-kyu (“Extreme Job”) and is an adaptation of director Lee Chung-hyun’s 2015 short film of the same name. Director Jun Woo-sung, who was part of the production team of the short, picked up the story and developed it into a six-part series. “Bargain” revolves around a group of strangers who gather at a remote motel with ulterior motives – seeking to bargain. Unlike the original film, the series follows the characters after an unexpected earthquake traps them inside the building. With no one to trust, they must find a way to survive.

Forget “will they or won’t they?” In the PBS import Marie Antoinette, a tongue-in-rouged-cheek take on a period biography, the question is when will the diffident young Dauphin, later King Louis XVI, take his teenage Austrian bride, Marie Antoinette, to bed? Their relationship is shown to be shrug at first sight, but the gossipy 18th-century French court hangs on these political pawns’ every move. After all, as Marie’s mother the Empress Maria Theresa (Marthe Keller) impresses upon her before sending her away, “Your job is to deliver the heir.” Yeah, but first things first. For much of the stylized first season, written by The Favourite’s Deborah Davis and ending well before the fateful Reign of Terror, Louis (gawky Louis Cunningham) flees at the very sight of Marie (a splendidly saucy Emilia Schüle) in a sexual panic. She’s frustrated by his rejection, but he’s just sad and pitiful,...

French pay TV group Canal+ has ordered a second season of its dazzling historical drama “Marie Antoinette.” BAFTA-nominated Ed Bazalgette will direct the first four episodes.
While Deborah Davis (“The Favourite”) still on board as creator, season 2’s writing team is led by Louise Ironside, joined by Charlotte Wolf, Francesca Forristal and Andrew Bambfield.
The series, which is being backed by Banijay and Newen, is expected to start filming in the fall. The new season will continue telling the epic story of the avant-garde young queen, played by Emilia Schüle (“Ku’damm 56/ 63”), with Louis Cunningham (“Bridgerton”) as the king of France, Louis XVI.
Commissioned by Canal+’s Creation Originale unit, the upcoming season will portray how the royal couple at their height of their power faced an unprecedented financial crisis. The incessant attacks of Provence and Chartres against the royal couple stirred up the hatred of the nobles while disastrous consequences.

Created and written by Deborah Davis (“The Favourite”), “Marie Antoinette” tells the story of the avant-garde young queen, played by Emilia Schüle.
An Austrian noble, Marie Antoinette was married off to Louis-Auguste, the future king of France, while she was still a girl. She was sent there with one goal: Deliver an heir. But nothing went as planned. Her husband refused to touch her for seven years and Marie-Antoinette’s rebellious ways wreaked havoc on the royal family.

On the outskirts of Paris, in a vast, industrial-looking studio in Bry-sur-Marne, the clocks have turned back to the 1770s. Opulent decor — gilded furniture, flower-adorned curtains and marble everywhere — fills the soundstage.
The atmosphere is studious on the set of “Marie-Antoinette,” a lavish French-produced costume drama created, co-written and executive produced by Deborah Davis. She’s delivering a feminist take on an infamous historical figure, best-known for apocryphally advising the starving masses to eat cake. We all know how that ended.
On screen, Marie-Antoinette hasn’t been treated better than she was at the guillotine, where she’s often depicted as a villain or a frivolous airhead.
“I found the fighter, and I loved being with her all the way through her battles,” says Davis, the Oscar-nominated writer of “The Favourite,” which focused on another queen, England’s Anne.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re speaking to Romain Bessi, CEO of French group Newen Studios. The company, which is producing Liaison, the first English and French language original for Apple TV+, is ramping up its global ambitions and Bessi takes us through the overall strategy.
When French media giant TF1 Group was eyeing a complete takeover of Versailles producer Newen Studios in 2017 after buying a 70 stake a few years prior, the company knew it had to line up an exec that would transform the French-centric company into an international operation capable of meeting the demands of the ever-changing content market. As production days notch upward across Paris, crews both local and international can sometimes find themselves competing not only for personnel and materials but also with a separate industry that predates the invention of the camera by several hundred years – the tourist trade.
In 2019, France was the world’s leading travel destination, hosting 90 million international visitors. Though obviously such numbers took a substantial hit when global travel tapered off in early 2020, much of the infrastructure and protocols meant to serve that older industry have very much remained in place.
To see one such challenge this creates, one need only look to the Château de Versailles, which keeps traditional museum hours, remaining open to the public six days a week. As the producers behind the upcoming Canal Plus series “Marie Antoinette” quickly learned – and those prepping the Johnny Depp-led, Maïwenn-directed Louis Xv project set to shoot there later this...

Since The Favourite’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival less than two years ago, writer Tony McNamara has quickly established a niche for crass, iconoclastic period pieces. The aforementioned Yorgos Lanthimos film, which McNamara co-wrote with Deborah Davis, went on to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, he’s kept that train rolling. Hulu’s The Great has been earning praise since it hit the service last week, and now THR reports that the writer is reteaming with Lanthimos for an adaptation of Richard Brautigan’s 1974 novel, The Hawkline Monster.
Brautigan published as many poetry collections as he did novels before his suicide in 1984. The Hawkline Monster, though, remains one of his lighter works, a parody of both Western and Gothic tales. It tells the story of a teenage girl who hires a pair of gunslingers to slay a monster rumored to live in the nearby caves.

Yorgos Lanthimos is reuniting with his “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara for an adaptation of Richard Brautigan’s 1974 Gothic Western novel “Hawkline Monster” (via The Wrap). The project is backed by New Regency and Element Pictures. McNamara’s script will follow two gunslingers who are hired by a 15-year-old girl to kill a monster that lives underneath the basement in the home of the title character Miss Hawkline. Lanthimos is set to direct the project, which has floated around Hollywood for years and has courted the likes of Hal Ashby and Tim Burton. Ashby’s attempt to adapt the book was to star Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman.
The news of “Hawkline Monster” comes at a major moment for Tony McNamara, the writer who is currently earning praise for creating the new Hulu period comedy “The Great,” starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. McNamara co-wrote “The Favourite” with Deborah Davis.

Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers called a forensic psychologist on Friday to testify about the fallibility of memory, on the second day of the defense presentation.
Elizabeth Loftus, a professor at Uc Irvine, has testified for the defense hundreds of times and worked in numerous high-profile cases, including O.J. Simpson, Ted Bundy and the McMartin preschool case.
“Memory does not work like a video recorder,” she told the jury. “When people experience an event and later are exposed to some kind of new information about the event … that new information can become incorporated into memory and can cause a contamination of memory.”
In previous testimony, the defense challenged the memory of Tarale Wulff, a model and former waitress at Cipriani Upstairs, who alleges that Weinstein raped her and masturbated in front of her in 2005. Defense attorney Donna Rotunno suggested that Wulff only recalled certain details after seeing a therapist.

Defence case expected to last three days.
The first defence witness in Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial said on Thursday (6) he thought the former Hollywood mogul was a sex addict, but did not believe he was capable of committing the crimes of which he has been accused.
Writer Paul Feldsher also acknowledged sending messages to the former producer in which he disparaged the “dog pile of actresses” who had accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct.
Feldsher testified for the defence that actress Annabella Sciorra told him in the early 1990s that she had a sexual encounter with Weinstein but did not say she had been raped.

The ninth annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) International Awards was held at Skybar at Mondrian La in West Hollywood on Friday, Jan. 3rd, 2020. Bong Joon-ho‘s “Parasite” won Best Picture while Quentin Tarantino won Best Director for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which also picked up the supporting actor prize for Brad Pitt. Among the other winners — Aussie Margot Robbie (for “Bombshell”) and New Zealander Taika Waititi for his “Jojo Rabbit” screenplay. While Martin Scorsese‘s “The Irishman” went into the evening with the most nominations (six), it left empty-handed.
Winners were decided by approximately 150 Australians who work in the film industry, either at home or in Hollywood. About half of these are voters for the Academy Awards and BAFTAs, with some also holding membership in the various guilds that bestow precursor prizes.

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who’d just won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Forty-seven women other than actresses were nominated for those 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home statuettes. Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men).
At last year’s Academy Awards, 53 women other than actresses were nominated as were 159 men. Women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories compared to 23.73% in 2018. Thirteen...

The Golden Globes have shut out female directors in four major categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and both Best Motion Picture categories. It’s par for the course for the annual event, which has only ever nominated five women for Best Director in its 77-year history, with only Barbra Streisand (a two-time nominee) going home with a win for her “Yentl.”
The most recent female-directed film to earn a win in the heavy-hitting categories was Greta Gerwig’s lauded “Lady Bird,” which won the Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy statuette in 2018. The first-time filmmaker was not nominated for her directing and her film was the only one directed by a woman to earn a nod in those three major categories.
This year, two female directors did earn nods in the Best Foreign-Language Film category, including Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” and Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

The European Film Academy has unveiled its nominations for the 32nd European Film Awards with the ceremony to be held December 7 in Berlin. Among the titles to figure in the races, three are tied with four mentions each including Roman Polanski’s An Officer And A Spy, Pedro Almodovar’s Pain And Glory and Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor. The latter two are also the Oscar representatives from their respective Spain and Italy and give Sony Pictures Classics a combined eight nods at the EFAs.
While Polanski remains a controversial figure, there has been a divide between U.S. and Euro perspectives in the #MeToo era. His Dreyfus Affair drama, An Officer And A Spy, which also has Efa nominations for Director, Actor and Screenwriter, was one of the most contested titles at the Venice Film Festival where it debuted earlier this year. It went on to win the Grand Jury Prize there.
