Exclusive: In the wake of the $216M-plus global grossing success of Anyone But You, Sony is going to keep this romcom train going. We hear that TriStar Pictures has preemptively acquired Brenda Hsueh’s high concept romantic comedy Man’s Best Friend.
Temple Hill is also set to produce.
Plot is under wraps, and in early development, but we hear it’s in the spirit of the Danny DeVito directed, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner 1989 black comedy, The War of the Roses.
Hsueh will write and executive produce through her Shoe’s Off Productions banner alongside her partner Yvonne Cheng.
Hsueh co-wrote the Disney/Pixar animated sleeper, Elemental, which made close to a half billion dollars at the global box office and was nominated for an Oscar in the Animated Feature category. She also consulted for Domee Shi, the director of Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.
Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.
The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.
The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

In 2022, then-Vox writer Emily St. James coined a catchy phrase to describe an emerging cinematic trend: the “millennial parental apology fantasy.” Daniels’s Everything Everywhere All at Once and Domee Shi’s Turning Red represented the tip of the spear for a cohort of films, usually with explicitly or understood queer themes, that sought to reverse the tide of intergenerational trauma by demanding expiation from its source. Just a year later, however, All of Us Strangers proves that St. James’s term has already outlived its usefulness, what with 1970s-born writer-director Andrew Haigh and star Andrew Scott demonstrating that the dream isn’t exclusively the provenance of a single generation.
Haigh transposes and queers Yamada Taichi’s 1987 novel Strangers to contemporary London, where Scott’s reserved screenwriter, Adam, dwells in a new and largely unoccupied tower block. From outside the building one evening, he peers curiously into the only other tenanted unit.

After one of the most impressive winning streaks in Hollywood history, Pixar has seen its fortunes reversed in recent years, with last year’s flop Lightyear and a pandemic-era policy of sending its features straight to streaming at Disney+. Now, Pixar faces a major test of brand strength as it prepares to unveil Elemental, its first original theatrical feature since Covid-19 hit.
Directed by Peter Sohn, the film is based on an original story set in a world where fire, water, earth and air residents live together. Among early reviews, the title has an underwhelming 64 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a low number for Pixar. Additionally, the movie is tracking to soft numbers, just $37 million to $38 million over the June 16-18 opening weekend, which it shares with Warner Bros.’ The Flash. Only a handful of Disney’s releases have debuted to less than $50 million. (There were plenty of negative...

John Hughes once explained why he loved stories about young people caught between childhood and adulthood. “One of the great wonders of that age is your emotions are so open and raw,” he said. “At that age it feels as good to feel bad as it does to feel good.”
The poet laureate of the coming-of-age film wasn’t wrong. These movies are built on some of the biggest feelings there are – first love! True friendship! Desperately trying to find a decent party and some booze! – and put you right back in the time when you felt everything so much, you thought you might actually burst. The arc is simple: a young person (or little gang of them) goes through some kind of quest or experience which opens their eyes to the world and shows them how innocent they were, and now never can be again. As Asian Pacific American Heritage Month kicks off, Gold House has unveiled this year’s A100, the Api leadership coalition’s sixth annual list of the Asian Pacific leaders who have most significantly impacted American culture and society in the last year.
Among the five categories included in the list — activism and journalism; business and technology; entertainment and media; lifestyle and fashion; and sports and gaming — one person tops each category as an overall A1 (maximum impact).
“Gold House’s A100 List is a vital representation of the diverse opportunities and achievements of and for Asian Pacific leaders,” said Michelle Yeoh, a Gold House A100 Hall of Famer and inaugural Gold Gala Honoree last year. “Becoming begins with seeing — and it shows how we’re just getting started. For many years, it was customary that every new theatrical release from Pixar would include a short film as an opener for the film, usually sharing a similar tone or thematic idea with the feature film. The last one was 2018's "Bao," which eventually won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and led to director Domee Shi helming her first feature, the breakout hit "Turning Red." Sadly, the tradition came to an end with the release of "Toy Story 4" in 2019, and if we're being honest, we've been missing it. Sure, Disney+ has been a fantastic outlet for fantastic short films out of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation studios, but there was always something magical about seeing a Pixar short before a feature — a cinematic appetizer to help the real world drift away and allow audiences to fully immerse themselves into a new, animated world.

Ready to cry your eyes out again? Because there’s a new “Up” short film from Pixar that should do the trick.
“Carl’s Date,” a short film produced after the series of “Up”-based shorts called “Dug Days” that premiered on Disney+ in 2021, will get the big screen treatment this June. The short is set to appear before “Elemental,” the new Pixar feature from Peter Sohn (who partially inspired the character of Russell in “Up”), and features Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) get ready for his first date since Ellie passed away. It is deeply touching and hilarious and appropriate as a preamble for “Elemental,” which focuses on the love story between two very opposite characters – one made of fire and the other made of water.
“Carl’s Date” was written and directed by Pixar stalwart Bob Peterson, who co-wrote and co-directed “Up” and who wrote and directed the rest of the “Dug Days” shorts,...

The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.
“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

The Oscars don't always (or often) get it right, but the first award of the 95th Academy Awards was well-deserved. Guillermo Del Toro's "Pinocchio" is not only a gorgeous adaptation of the classic children's novel and a feat of stop-motion animation, but it takes the source material to the next level by flipping the story into a dark fable about fascism. A stout (yet menacing) Mussolini even makes an appearance, just in time to sit through a hilarious musical number in his honor, with profound lyrics such as, "He's just doo-doo to me." For that song alone, this movie deserves its gilded trophy -- which I assume will live on a shelf of honor, alongside the adorable Pinocchio and Gepetto puppets that brought this story to life.
This win marks Del Toro's third Oscar win (out of seven nominations), after taking home Best Picture and Best Director for "The Shape of Water...

It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.
Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

One of the aspects of Pixar’s “Turning Red” that the filmmakers are most proud of is the movie’s depiction of Toronto’s Chinatown. Not a Chinatown full of offensive cliches or dangerous stereotypes, but the type of Chinatown that feels real and lived in and true to its real-world counterpart. Director Domee Shi recently spoke about how much this aspect of the film meant to her. And it’s easy to understand why Shi is so proud, especially given the painful representations of Chinatown in the past. Due to a family blessing/curse, 13-year-old Chinese Canadian Meilin (Rosalie Chang) transforms into a red panda whenever she experiences strong emotions, which is less than ideal for a teenager. Using Mei as a surrogate character, Shi replicates her childhood experience of struggling to please her mother as she entered adolescence. The film’s portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship sparked dialogues between teens and parents going through the same experience and gave Shi a chance to become closer with her own mother.

While this year’s Oscars are finally back on a regular schedule, and the 2023 Nominees Luncheon was back at the Beverly Hilton after a hiatus that even predated the pandemic, certain changes still abound.
In her welcome speech, newly-elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Janet Yang congratulated the 182 of this year’s nominees in attendance, and said, “I feel it’s important to take this rare opportunity while we’re gathered here together to address some of the Academy’s recent challenges. Last year, as I’m sure you all remember, we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars. What happened on stage was unacceptable, and the response from the organization was inadequate.”
Yang continued, “We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly insist on acting quickly, compassionately, and decisively, for ourselves and for our industry,...

For Domee Shi, it was incredibly important that the central character of “Turning Red” was a teenager because it was a character that she hadn’t seen in a Disney or Pixar movie. “I was really excited about the opportunity to really showcase and explore the weirdness and specificity of being a teen girl and how everything felt like life or death,” the director tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
In addition to having a secret sketchbook, Shi took another crazy part of her teenage years and incorporated it into the movie. “My mom did follow me on my first day of middle school and hid behind a tree with sunglasses on hoping I wouldn’t recognize her. She did not get into a fight with a security guard, thank goodness.”

This marks the sixth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Animated Feature predictions.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

Alot has changed in Domee Shi’s life since she won an Oscar for her 2018 Pixar short Bao, which follows a Chinese Canadian mother with empty-nest syndrome and a sentient steamed bun. Shi, who began as a story intern at Pixar in 2011 before being hired as a story artist on mentor Pete Docter’s Inside Out, is herself Chinese Canadian with immigrant parents and has learned to embrace her real-life background as inspiration for stories. That included her debut animated feature, Turning Red, for which she just earned her second Oscar nom.
“Four or five years ago, I couldn’t have imagined being here — directing a feature, nominated against Guillermo del Toro and other amazing animation directors and peers,” says Shi. “I learned so much from this experience. I’ve definitely grown in terms of my confidence as a storyteller, as a filmmaker.”

The 2023 Oscar nominations were a mixed bag in terms of diversity — with no Black actors nominated in the lead acting categories and women shut out for best director — but there was one particular milestone worth applauding. With nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu (all for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Hong Chau (“The Whale”), the number of Asian acting nominees reached the most recognized in a single year ever at four nominations.
This figure surpasses the lineup from 2004, which included Indian and Iranian actors Ben Kingsley and Shohreh Aghdashloo (both for “House of Sand and Fog”) and Japanese star Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”).
“Everything Everywhere All At Once,” written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, was the top film with 11 nominations, many of which held historical significance. The Daniels are the fifth duo nominated for directing, with Kwan’s nominations for directing and...

Female directors were once again shut out in the director category at the Academy Awards after two years of seeing progress in the space, with women winning the prestigious award in back-to-back years.
The nominees this year are Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Todd Field (Tar) and Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness).
That means there were no women nominated despite a buzzy awards year for female filmmakers, like The Woman King‘s Gina Prince-Bythewood and Women Talking‘s Sarah Polley, or Till‘s Chinonye Chukwu, She Said‘s Maria Schrader and Aftersun‘s Charlotte Wells.
Last year, Jane Campion became the first woman to receive multiple Oscar nominations for best director, having previously been recognized for 1993’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Piano. She became the third woman in history to win the best...

As Steve Pond, TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, noted in his final predictions, with the Academy bigger and more international than ever before, it was likely they would throw several surprises.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

The diversity of animated features — both content and assembly — continues to evolve in lockstep with filmmaking technology’s almost daily leaps and bounds. This ever-changing landscape creates new challenges and opportunities for directors to tell stories that encapsulate everything from epic blockbuster spectacles to personal, relationship-driven dramas.
“Animation is such a powerful medium in exploring complicated themes in an easily accessible way,” says Pixar director Domee Shi, whose “Turning Red” tells the coming-of-age story of Mei, a 13-year-old girl in 2000s-era Toronto, who turns into a giant red panda at the onset of puberty. “I think animation also almost tricks the audience into believing magical logic a little bit more, because it’s already an abstracted version of reality.”
