1962 to 1972 Attended a 10th grade polytechnic high school in Berlin. 1972 to 1974 apprenticeship as a skilled worker for data processing. 1974 to 1976 one and a half years of basic military service in the National People's Army.
1976 to 1979 programmer at the Institute for Medical and Biophysics at the Berlin Charité. From 1985 correspondence course in information processing, graduated in 1995; from 1988 active in church peace circles.
Member of the advisory board of the Paul-Gerhardt-Werk, member of the board of the Förderverein Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen.
October 1989 founding member and first spokesman for the SDP, February to July 1990 executive director of the SPD in the GDR, member of the SPD subdistrict executive of Elbe-Elster. Member of the People's Chamber from March 18 to October 2, 1990.
Member of the Bundestag since October 3, 1990; November 28, 2000 to October 22, 2002 Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Housing; since November 2005 Deputy Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.
