The Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee announced Wednesday morning that it had canceled a hearing scheduled later in the day in which lawmakers planned to interrogate D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser about her response to pro-Palestinian student protests at George Washington University. The cancellation came hours after police raided and cleared the student encampment, which had been occupying a lawn on the university campus since April 25.
According to The Gw Hatchet, the university’s student newspaper of record, more than 30 protesters were arrested by D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department (Mpd) around 3:30 a.

“Late this afternoon after a routine test, I tested positive for Covid-19. I’m so thankful to be both vaccinated & boosted, and at the advice of the Attending Physician I plan to isolate. If you haven’t gotten your shot yet, I encourage you to do so,” Warnock wrote on Twitter.
Warnock’s test came after he voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Another senator, Susan Collins (R-me), announced her positive result late on Thursday afternoon.
Collins was among those who attended last weekend’s Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, which has so far reported more than three dozen cases among attendees to the event. In a message sent to members on Thursday evening, the club said that they had learned of 37 positive tests among dinner guests, including two at the head table.

Tucker is holding out for a hero to stop Covid safety measures at weddings
Kevin Bacon was on Tucker Carlson’s mind Thursday evening — the Fox News host spent several minutes of his show playing clips from Bacon’s 1984 hit movie “Footloose,” comparing the story about a small town that bans dancing to new coronavirus precautions Washington, D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser has enforced that don’t allow dancing at weddings.
Previously, weddings weren’t allowed in D.C., but the district will allow them with venues at no more than 25% capacity and without standing or dancing receptions. Other states, like Illinois and Michigan, have similar precautions in place with the like-minded goal of keeping coronavirus infections to a minimum.

A decade ago, the crowds attending Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s first inauguration were so great that a flood of ticketholders got stuck throughout the ceremony in a Capitol Hill tunnel, a snafu that was dubbed the Purple Tunnel of Hell.
This time around, save for Capitol Hill police and National Guard troops, there wasn’t an attendee to be found around that tunnel.
There were, in fact, relatively few people at all at Wednesday’s inaugural swearing-in ceremony (in the low thousands), given the mandates of Covid-19 and the threats following the Capitol siege. Inside a vast security perimeter that surrounds the Capitol, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were sworn in at a ceremony that seemed designed to inspire a sense of relief more than anything.
That’s despite all of the anxieties leading up to the moment: Washington, D.

The U.S. Capitol fell under attack on Wednesday.
Hours after President Trump encouraged supporters to march to the Capitol to protest the certification of last November’s election results, thousands of them did just that. They were met with resistance from Capitol police upon reaching the building, but not long after 2 p.m., they were able to move past authorities and breach the halls of government. Congress, which was in the process of debating the presidential vote certification, abruptly went into recess and the building was locked down.

Chaos erupted at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday as a pro-Trump mob stormed the seat of the country’s legislative branch in a violent scene that was reminiscent of an attempted coup or an insurrection.
Lawmakers were evacuated as the rioters breached barricades, interrupting the certification of the results of the recent presidential election. Thousands of rioters, waving “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and shouting “stop the steal,” flooded Capitol Hill and paraded through National Statuary Hall, creating a tense standoff with law enforcement that dissolved into violence. Tear gas was reportedly deployed in the rotunda and shots were fired.
CNN reported that a woman was in critical condition after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds. Multiple outlets later reported that she had died. Several others, including a police officer, were injured.

Hundreds of Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to protest the Electoral College’s voting to certify president-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
The pro-Trump protestors, many of whom were armed and became rioters, pushed through barriers and law enforcement officers outside of the Capitol and breached the building on Wednesday afternoon. Rioters were filmed inside the building marching through Statuary Hall and other parts of the Capitol. CNN reported that flash bangs could be heard near the steps of the Capitol and in some instances officers were deploying pepper spray. Congress Meets To Count Electoral Votes; Donald Trump Again Pressures Mike Pence To Overturn Results
Speaking to very large crowds of supporters just outside the White House, President Donald Trump again pressured Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the results of the presidential election during a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.
But Pence has no authority to do so, as his role presiding over Congress’ counting of the electoral votes, which will certify Joe Biden’s win, is largely ceremonial.
“Mike Pence is going to have to come through for us, because if he doesn’t, that will be a sad day for our country, because you have sworn to uphold the Constitution,” he said.
Among the cable news networks, CNN and MSNBC did not carry the speech; Fox News did.
Appearing before the huge crowds that stretched from the Ellipse to the Washington Monument, Trump seemed to relish his close up moment, a last stand before Biden’s victory becomes final once and for all.

President Donald Trump unleashed a Category 5 tweetstorm today, tweeting and retweeting more than 80 messages in his regular Sunday communications.
The Commander-in-Tweet focused on the continuing chaos in Portland, Oregon in his early messages, chiding that city’s Mayor Ted Wheeler for refusing to allow federal intervention to quell the disturbances. Wheeler’s condo complex has since been taken over by left-wing protesters who wish to oust him, and ongoing street clashes resulted in the death of a man on Saturday night.
Trump also touted his rising poll numbers after the Republican National Convention, and threatened Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to clean up that city’s massive wave of protests or accept the National Guard to do so.
We’ll have more communications as they come in. The tweetstorm so far:
Rushing him out of basement after seeing some very disturbing numbers. Don’t worry, he’ll go back to basement soon!

Other speakers on Monday will include Bernie Sanders, but more notable are Republicans who will get a prime-time speaking slot: John Kasich, former governor of Ohio; Susan Molinari, former congresswoman from New York; Christine Whitman, former governor of New Jersey; and Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard and 2010 California gubernatorial candidate. Now, amid anti-police brutality protests in our nation’s capital and beyond, it’s become a haven for protesters looking for a break, a bathroom or some milk to dull the sting of pepper spray.
Last Saturday, the 9:30 Club opened its doors for five hours to protesters, offering them charging facilities, hand sanitizer, water, restrooms and basic first-aid.

Update, 9:02 Am Pt: President Donald Trump’s campaign unveiled the first of two 30-second Super Bowl ads, just a couple hours after his potential 2020 rival Michael Bloomberg debuted his own spot that will air during the Sunday game.
Each campaign is spending more than $10 million for the ad time, likely the priciest of the year to reach what is traditionally the largest TV audience.
The Trump ad focuses on the economy, and after a narrator says, “America demanded change,” the first voice heard is that of CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. It’s a bit ironic given Trump’s attacks on the network. The narrator talks about rising wages and job growth, particularly for African Americans and Hispanics. Trump ends by saying, “And ladies and gentlemen, the best is yet to come.”
