The UK home secretary has apologized for making a joke about spiking his wife’s drink with a date rape drug.
James Cleverly’s remarks were made at a reception at the Prime Minister’s home-office 10 Downing Street, and made public hours after Cleverly’s department announced a crackdown on the offence of spiking drinks.
The Sunday Mirror newspaper reported that Cleverly told female guests at the event, “a little bit of Rohypnol in her drink every night” was “not really illegal if it’s only a little bit.”
The paper added that he was quoted saying the secret to a long marriage was making sure your spouse was “always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there.”
A spokesperson for the home secretary said: “In what was always understood as a private conversation, James, the home secretary, tackling spiking made what was clearly meant...

The BBC has admitted it made a mistake over its reporting of a rocket attack on a Gaza hospital.
BBC correspondent Jon Donnison was reporting live on air about claims that a hospital in the region, which borders both Egypt and Israel, had been struck by a bomb or missile.
Donnision, who has worked for the corporation for 25 years, told viewers the Israeli military had been contacted for comment adding: “But it’s hard to see what else this could be really given the size of the explosion other than an Israeli air strike or several air strikes.”
Hamas, the terrorist organization that governs Gaza, claimed 500 people had died in the attack at the Al-Ahli Arab hospital in Gaza City.
Just hours after the broadcast an Al Jazeera livestream emerged of rockets being fired from Gaza into Israel which suggested the hit on the hospital had been caused by a Hamas rocket misfiring.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the BBC’s London headquarters on Monday evening to protest the broadcaster’s coverage of the terrorist attacks that took place in Israel last week.
The BBC has found itself mired in controversy after refusing to describe Palestinian group Hamas, who killed almost 2,000 citizens on Oct. 7, as terrorists. They have instead referred to them as “militants.” Hamas has officially been designated a proscribed terrorist organization by the U.K. government since 2021.
On Monday evening, protesters, many of them carrying Israel flags, gathered outside New Broadcasting House chanting “shame on you,” “justice” and “Hamas are terrorists” at the corporation. Some BBC employees could be seen peering out through the windows at the gathering.
Among the speakers at the event were former BBC anchor Jonny Gould and Talk TV host Andre Walker. Gould, who hosts the Jewish State podcast, told the crowd that Hamas are a group that “beheads babies,...

Exclusive: BBC Director General Tim Davie was in contact with a senior government official on the day he suspended Gary Lineker, raising questions about whether he was pressured to punish the presenter for breaking impartiality rules.
Documents obtained by Deadline reveal that Davie was in dialogue with Polly Payne, Director General of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms), on March 10. Emails between the BBC and the Dcms show that Payne and Davie’s conversations were unscheduled.
The papers cast fresh light on the biggest crisis of Davie’s tenure after he suspended Match of the Day host Lineker for tweeting that government asylum policy had echoes of Nazi Germany. Lineker was swiftly reinstated three days later following a weekend of chaos, in which his colleagues effectively went on strike and BBC sports coverage fell off air.
The revelation that Davie spoke to the Dcms has raised eyebrows among BBC staff,...

Liz Truss is to be the next UK Prime Minister, replacing Boris Johnson and defeating Rishi Sunak to become the third woman to hold the office.
Truss’ victory was just announced in Parliament and she will officially take up the post tomorrow, when Johnson, who resigned in disgrace in July over multiple scandals, heads to the Queen’s residence in Balmoral.
The former Foreign Secretary and International Trade Secretary won comfortably, with 57 or 81,000 of the Conservative Party member base voting her in compared to 60,000 for Sunak.
Although nominated by less MPs than Sunak and starting the race considerably behind him, she has been favorite for the majority of the eight-week long run-off period, which has included 12 hustings around the country and multiple interviews.
Accepting her victory, Truss said it has been a “hardening campaign” during which the “depth and breadth of Conservative Party talent” was shown, while she also thanked “my friend Boris Johnson.
