It’s only that the media hype has died down, Michel Reihac told the Doha audience.
Virtual Reality (Vr) remains on course to have as big an impact on our lives as the internet and smartphones even if the media hype around the new technology has died down over the past 18 months, French Vr pioneer Michel Reilhac told an industry talk at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event (March 15-20) this week.

Penrose Studios, a pioneering and award-winning virtual-reality animation house, has banked $10 million in Series A funding led by TransLink Capital with participation from investors including Will.I.Am and Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff.
Other investors include Sway Ventures (formerly known as Accelerate-it Ventures), which led Penrose’s seed-round funding of $8.5 million in 2016, along with Korea Telecom, Co-Made, 8Vc, and Suffolk Equity.
Penrose was founded in 2015 by CEO Eugene Chung, who was previously head of film and media at Oculus Vr. The company has produced several films and also has developed its own software to create augmented-reality and virtual-reality content.
With the funding, Penrose plans to recruit more engineers and artists; focus on “ways to elevate Ar & Vr as storytelling platforms, through continued partnerships and events”; and continue to invest in its in-house native Ar and Vr tools, Chung wrote in a blog post.

Annecy, France — John Kahrs’ “Age Of Sail” and Jan Pinkava and Mark Oftedal’s “Piggy” are two of the four state-of-the art-animated Vr projects that Google Spotlight Stories (Gss) has brought this year to Annecy. For the third year running, Gss – a division of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (Atap) group – and Google Vr are partnering with Vr@Annecy, a non-competitive category of the official selection.
At a Studio Focus Session on Wednesday presented by Gss, titled “Animation Everywhere,” the projects’ creators discussed their shorts while exploring the storytelling capabilities of Vr, as well as the limitations and possibilities of 360 immersion. The panel was moderated by Gss’ executive producer Karen Dufilho and Pinkava, Gss’ creative director. Panelists included Kahrs, directors François-Xavier Goby and Hélène Leroux (“Back to the Moon”), and artist Céline Desrumaux, production designer in “Age.”
Kahrs took home the best animated short Oscar and an Annie Award in 2013 for his hybrid “Paperman.

As virtual reality becomes recognized as a viable film technology internationally, the Korean film industry is not hesitating to join the trend: film tech labs and visual effects houses are producing Vr content more aggressively than ever, while major exhibitors are developing new technologies to screen this material.
Until quite recently, Vr content was rarely available in cinemas as most Vr productions have been designed for theme parks and experiential games. But now South Korea is catching up the global trend – a movement in which Vr animation such as Eugene Chung’s “Arden’s Wake” draw wide attention and leading film festivals launch competition sections specifically for Vr films.
South Korea has showcased quite a few notable Vr film projects: in 2017, Gina Kim’s Vr documentary “Bloodless” competed in the Venice film festival’s Vr competition and won the best Vr Story Award. Based on a true event in 1992, the...

When Sundance sales were tallied this year, one title was left out of many stories: “Spheres,” a three-part virtual reality series from executive producer Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures. Vr financing/distribution outfit CityLights’ seven-figure acquisition of the project was reportedly a record for the fest’s 11-year-old New Frontier section.
“The sale signaled that there is a path for independent Vr,” Aronofsky says of director Eliza McNitt’s work, which places viewers in the center of outer space with narration by Jessica Chastain and Patti Smith. “The most important films are often made outside the studio system, where creators have the freedom to advance the medium. We now know this can be true of Vr, too.”
The sale was promising news for Next, the innovation hub at Cannes Market. The section will showcase more than 25 projects (including Vr companion pieces for Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” and Wes Anderson’s...

Tribeca is back at it with another excellent lineup of Vr content across their three curated sections: Storyscapes, Virtual Arcade, and Cinema 360. I got a chance to check out the majority of what was on tap and it is another strong year for the festival. Before we get to the pieces debuting at Tribeca, a quick acknowledgment of a few pieces at this fest that I previously covered at past festivals: Dinner Party, Battlescar, and Together. Arden's Wake: Tide's Fall Penrose Studios and its director Eugene Chung wowed everyone last year when they premiered their Arden's Wake: Prologue. For those who don't remember, their new chapter Tide's Fall includes those first few minutes of the dollhouse introduction to Meena and her father. This time,...

As Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider,” Alicia Vikander just carried out a search for her sea-snatched father. The Oscar winner (“The Danish Girl”) will do the same in her next project, “Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall.” The 30-minute Vr experience from San Francisco-based Penrose Studios premieres Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Besides voicing the protagonist — a young girl in the post-apocalyptic future — Vikander executive produced the piece. “Meena’s character has a special spark, and I was immediately drawn to her when I experienced her in Vr,” said Vikander in a statement. “The movie daringly brings up difficult situations while also allowing viewers to get quite close to the characters in such an immersive and emotional experience.”
“Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall” was proceeded by “Arden’s Wake: The Prologue,” a Tribeca 2017 debut. According to The Verge, said 15-minute exercise established that Meena and her father live...

Alicia Vikander may be best known for her leading role in the current “Tomb Raider” reboot, but the Swedish actress is taking a first step into the world of virtual reality (Vr) with “Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall,” the new animated feature from San Francisco’s Penrose Studios that is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this month.
“This project is unlike anything I’ve ever done before, and I think virtual and augmented reality are going to be big in Hollywood, as well as entertainment more broadly,” said Vikander.
In “Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall,” Vikander is voicing the role of Meena, a young woman who lives with her father on a lighthouse that floats somewhere on top of what at one point used to be New York city. The dichotomy between Meena’s post-apocalyptic world and her idyllic home, full of pictures and childhood memories, sets...
