Robert Downey Jr. is one of the biggest movie stars of our generation. The actor recently won his first Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s monumental 2023 historical drama Oppenheimer. But, despite his many impressive movie roles, Downey Jr. will forever be Iron Man for Marvel fans.
The 59-year-old actor also won fans over after candidly talking about his battle with drug addiction and how he overcame it. However, long before the Iron Man actor was on his road to redemption, he played the role of a drug addict in a forgotten 1987 thriller. Playing the said role catapulted him further into the dark depths of addiction.

Channing Dungey first joined Warner Bros. TV Group as chairman in late 2020 — right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting first year on the job. Then came the Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, and the restructuring that came with it. In 2023, the Hollywood strikes disrupted the business again.
“It’s been a lot of tumult since I’ve been in the role,” Dungey recently reflected to Variety. “I’m hoping — and I’m knocking wood as I say this — that as we round the corner into 2024, we’re behind some of those bigger challenges. I’m sure there will be something new on the horizon, but I’m hopeful that 2024 marks a return to business as usual.”
The entertainment industry remains in flux, of course, with more disruption anticipated this year. But in her own corner of the biz, Dungey said she feels some truly positive momentum.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Thursday’s episode of ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise.
Things are heating up in Paradise.
The women are preparing to hand out roses, and the men are clamoring for their attention to make sure they stick around for another week…but several of them will still go home despite their best efforts. You may remember that the last episode ended on several cliffhangers. What will happen with Sam’s poo baby? Will Mercedes choose Tyler or Will? Are Kat and Brayden still feuding?
First on the agenda is Sam, who has been anxiously awaiting the sunrise — her cut off for a natural bowel movement before more medical intervention will require her to leave the beach. By the time the sun is peeking over the horizon, Sam’s situation hasn’t gotten any better. Stuck in a sh*tty situation (no pun intended), Sam...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the high water mark for one-location thrillers: the central siege in John Carpenter's 1976 classic "Assault on Precinct 13.")
There's a hypothetical version of "Assault on Precinct 13" out there that does away with the restraint and foreboding atmosphere of the original, recklessly tossed out in favor of high-wire thrills and a never-ending collection of narrative tropes. In place of a handful of straightforward (yet effective) archetypes thrown together as strangers but who come out as something else altogether after the crucible of one endlessly violent night, someone might've had the inclination to try and "humanize" these characters by burdening them with edgy backstories or an overcomplicated plot. In essence, imagine stripping away all the idiosyncrasy and personality just to end up with another generic action/thriller.

One of the Bachelor in Paradise singles may be going home early because… well, because she can’t go.
Toward the end of this season’s third episode on Thursday night, Sam Jeffries (from The Bachelor: Clayton) bellied up to the bar to confide in barkeep/Bachelorette Season 12 alum Wells that she has not been able to poop for nine days. And if she doesn’t go by sunrise, a doctor told her, she will need to leave the premises to be admitted to a hospital.

Married couple Wells Adams and Sarah Hyland have established themselves as reality dating show staples, Adams as the beloved bartender on “Bachelor in Paradise” and Hyland the host of “Love Island U.S.” But this summer their jobs got to collide when they visited each other’s “weird workplaces.”

Francine Coeytaux and Elisa Wells have been at this for awhile. In the ’90s, the pair were part of the team that helped bring Plan B, Aka the “morning-after pill,” over the counter to anyone who needed it. Even after the initial Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973 — which made abortion a protected right in the United States — the pro-life versus pro-choice fault lines remained in America and extended even to medically safe (and legal) oral contraceptives and abortion medications.
But that was Plan B. These days, it’s all about Plan C. Founded in 2015 and led by Coeytaux, Wells, and Amy Merrill, the organization was designed with one pressing mission: to envision and help establish “a near future in which the ability to end an early pregnancy is directly in the hands of anyone who seeks it.” Easier said than done.

This festival season brought with it a pair of ambitious adaptations of scholarly texts. In Venice, Ava DuVernay premiered Origin, a narrative take on Isabel Wilkerson’s tome, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. The Selma director anchored her adaptation in a tender love story, using Wilkerson’s personal life to understand the intellectual and emotional labor supporting the book’s framework. And at the Toronto International Film Festival, Roger Ross Williams debuted his own film translation of an influential text on race.
In Stamped From the Beginning, Williams uses Ibram X. Kendi’s book of the same name to recast the narrators of Black history. The documentary, which will premiere on Netflix in November, convenes contemporary Black women scholars and organizers to synthesize and contextualize Kendi’s central thesis. The author makes the briefest appearances throughout the film, attesting to Williams’ mission to center Black women.

Warner Bros. TV has suspended its overall deals with Bill Lawrence, Mindy Kaling, Greg Berlanti and several other producers amid the historic Hollywood double strike, according to media reports.
J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, John Wells and Chuck Lorre are among the producers who were also impacted by the suspensions, though their deals may have been impacted earlier in the strike.
The news comes nearly four months after studios including Amazon, HBO, Warner Bros. TV, NBCUniversal, Disney, CBS Studios began suspending deals at the onset on the WGA strike in May. Warner Bros. TV has suspended overall deals with more of its A-list, marquee producers, which includes Greg Berlanti, Bill Lawrence, John Wells, Chuck Lorre and Mindy Kaling, as well as J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot shingle.

Others who had shows in various stages of post-production when the work stoppage began May 2 were kept status quo while episodes were completed. Watching an international version of Taskmaster has the uncanny quality of trying to explain a dream. The sets are the same, but also not. The theme music’s a match, but it’s playing over people and tasks you don’t recognise. The Taskmaster was there, but it wasn’t the Taskmaster, just some other tall man in a suit. Gilligan’s Island fans likely can’t imagine a scenario in which Mary Ann wasn’t part of the group stranded on a deserted island. Mary Ann, played by Dawn Wells, stole the hearts of fans for all three seasons of the original series and in multiple T.V. movies. Mary Ann, however, was not originally part of the plan and neither was Wells. The character did not appear in the original pilot. Instead, a character named Bunny, rounded out the cast.
Mary Ann was not part of the original ‘Gilligan’s Island’ plot
Dawn Wells was not originally part of the Gilligan’s Island cast but appeared in the second episode. That second episode, “Two on a Raft,” is the episode most people consider the series’s pilot. Still, there was one test pilot filmed before that. In the original pilot, the cast looked a bit different. Namely, Wells was not Mary Ann.

Aftersun (Charlotte Wells)
One of last year’s most resonant films, Aftersun looks at the scratchy dynamics between a father and daughter while on vacation. It’s about memory, the finite nature of the relationships in our lives, and the difficulties of a parent’s diminishing mental health. Charlotte Wells knows where to put the camera in her debut—undeterred from taking risks, from placing her characters outside of the frame, from looking at shadows instead of the people themselves. Aftersun is a rare, tremendous first film, full of heart and focused melancholy; it breaks you down and fills you up simultaneously. The consistent inclusion of camcorder footage, and the fact that it enhances the story rather than becoming a distraction, further...

The superhero comic books of Marvel and DC use a static timeline, where no characters permanently age. That's what makes "Batman Beyond" so unique; following in the thematic footsteps of "The Dark Knight Returns," the show depicted a Bruce Wayne who'd aged out of the cowl. In his place, he trained teenage Terry McGinnis as the new Dark Knight. The film "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" even provided a definite end for "Batman: The Animated Series," showing via flashback the final battle between the original Batman and the Joker; the latter abducts Robin (Tim Drake) and tortures/brainwashes him into "Joker Junior." Tim ultimately snaps and kills the Joker with his own spear gun.
However, the next DC Animated Universe series, "Justice League"/"Justice League Unlimited," went back to the "present"/contemporary era. This left the creators constrained by what they established in "Batman Beyond" — or did it?

This post contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #26.
In 1940, Mlj Publishers had a problem. Their standout artist Jack Cole (best known as the creator of Plastic Man) had left the company, abandoning the hit series Pep Comics and its star the Comet. Without Cole’s pencils, the Comet didn’t pop in the same way, and the company needed something drastic to save its sales. So in Pep Comics #17, a thug guns the Comet down, inspiring his brother to become a new hero called the Hangman.
The first superhero death in comic books set the trend for all that followed. Pep killed off the Comet not for any story reason, but because they wanted to goose sales. And not only does his death launch another hero, but he doesn’t stay dead for good — Mlj (now Archie Comics) brought back the Comet in the 1960s and the 1980s, eventually licensing him to DC Comics.

According to the official synopsis from Fox, “‘Rescue: Hi Surf’ is an action-packed drama that follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu—the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world.”
“Each episode will feature these dedicated, heroic, and adrenaline-seeking first-responders saving lives in the difficult and often life-threatening conditions of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle.” Kester will write the first episode with Wells directing the first two episodes.
“I’ve lived on the North Shore of O‘ahu for most of my life, and these are our heroes, the most extraordinary extreme athletes anywhere,” said Kester.

Tucker Carlson hasn’t left Fox Corporation quite yet.
The company’s Fox News Media unit has hours and hours of various specials and original programming the controversial anchor developed for the subscription-based streaming service Fox Nation, and doesn’t appear poised to take any of that content down.
The Carlson-created options currently available on the service are manifold. There is a program called “Let Them Eat Bugs!” that examines how “global leaders, movie stars and social media influencers are making a concerted push to force bugs into your diet, whether you like it or not.” A “Tucker Carlson Originals Christmas Special” is available for those interested. And Carlson’s last broadcast on Fox News Channel — from Friday, April 21 — is ready to for binge-viewing. There are also classic Carlson interviews to be found in “Tucker Carlson Tonight: The Vault.”

When the bombshell that Fox News and its star primetime host Tucker Carlson were parting ways hit the wire just before 11:30 a.m. Et on April 24, Fox Corp.’s share price went into a free fall.
In minutes, the stock price fell 5.5 percent, wiping out more than $900 million from the company’s market cap.
If Fox News is the financial crown jewel of Fox Corp. (defamation cases notwithstanding), Carlson was arguably its shiniest gem, by far the most watched individual host on the channel, and the one host that went all in on populism even as many of his colleagues toed the party line.
In the company’s last fiscal quarter earnings, Fox had revenue of $4.6 billion and net income of $321 million. The cable division (of which Fox News is the largest component by far) accounted for only $1.6 billion in revenue (about a third of the company’s revenue...

A television adaptation of Stephen L. Carter’s best-selling novel “Emperor of Ocean Park” has been granted a 10-episode series order at MGM+.
The suspense thriller, which is set in the worlds of politics, Ivy League academia, and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard, centers on Talcott Garland, an Ivy League law professor whose quiet life is shattered when his father, Judge Oliver Garland, dies of an apparent heart attack. The nature of the judge’s death is questioned by Tal’s sister, Mariah, a former journalist and inveterate conspiracy theorist, who believes that the judge, a failed Black nominee to the Supreme Court, met with foul play.
“Emperor of Ocean Park is much more than a murder mystery,” MGM+ head Michael Wright said in a statement. “While it is an engrossing whodunit in its own right, it also explores important themes of middle-and-upper-class Black identity, making it an outstanding...

“Emperor of Ocean Park,” the best-selling novel by Stephen L. Carter, is being adapted into a TV series at MGM+.
MGM+ (formerly Epix) has ordered 10 episodes of the show. The order brings the book’s long road to the screen to near completion. It was originally optioned back in 2001 ahead of the book publishing. Multiple attempts have since been made to adapt the book into a film and later a television series, though none of those projects have moved forward until now.

It’s a credit to the construction of Charlotte Wells’ first feature, “Aftersun”, that you can’t accurately describe it as the story of a young girl (Frankie Corio) and her father (Paul Mescal) on vacation together in Turkey in the late 1990s. It’s a story about a woman remembering the vacation she and her father took together, with both warm clarity and aching ellipses, mysteries that probably won’t ever be solved. The powers, failures, and textures of memory guide us through understanding Sophie and Calum, together and apart, and the film’s finds as breathtaking and visual a way to dramatize how each of us becomes someone else’s memory in the end.
It does this, partially, with a rave.
