To say that the 80's were the heyday of soap operas would be an understatement. There were no shows that captivated as many people as soap operas did, and to this day it's hard to replicate that success. General Hospital, however, has always been a step above any other show, thanks to the success of Luke and Laura's wedding.
From breaking the record of 30 million viewers to receiving gifts from Princess Diana herself, no couple has ever had so much attention focused on them. As controversial as the whole story was, it's hard to argue with the fact that so many people fell in love with their twisted romance.
The question is, where are the actors who brought these characters to our screens, today?

Laura Wright is a soap opera veteran currently starring in General Hospital. The actress has been in soaps since 1991, appearing in Loving, All My Children, The City, Guiding Light, and General Hospital. However, she said one of the hardest days she ever had to film happened last year.
Here is what Wright had to say about the day she had to say goodbye to “mom” one year ago this week.
Laura Wright On Her Toughest General Hospital Filming Day
On May 9, 2023, General Hospital star Jacklyn Zeman died. Zeman played Bobbie Spencer on Gh from 1977 until 2010. She returned in 2013 and starred in the role until she died in 2023. With Zeman dying, the popular daytime soap had to find a way to say goodbye to the actress and the character. This was not easy for the cast.

In the 1950s daytime programming became extremely popular, with game shows and soap operas becoming a staple in American households. Although the Emmy Awards had been established in 1949, the categories were limited for the first few years, and performers from all genres, and from both daytime and nighttime programs, were lumped together in one or two acting categories, with daytime performers usually left out.
In 1962 Mary Stuart became the only soap opera actress nominated for a Primetime Emmy, for her role as Joanne Gardner on “Search for Tomorrow.” In 1968 a category for Best Achievement in Daytime Programming was attempted, but judges decided that no one was deserving. Outraged pioneers of the genre, such as writer Agnes Nixon and “General Hospital” star John Beradino, lobbied for recognition of daytime television. In 1972 the first Emmy Awards specifically honoring daytime programming were bestowed to “The Doctors” for Best Daytime Drama and to Mary Fickett...

A stunning bride marries her love, hops in a limo and is blown to smithereens. Joy, scandal, tragedy — and returning from the dead, of course — have kept General Hospital fans tuned in since its 1963 debut. Today, ABC’s Gh is one of four soaps still standing — with CBS’s The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, and Days of Our Lives on Peacock — and remains a perfect shot of afternoon intrigue. It even grabbed a record 15th Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2022. “General Hospital always explored stories not told in primetime,” executive producer Frank Valentini says. What’s the secret serum that’s made Gh a winner? We visited with show VIPs to find out. Lessons in Chemistry During the 1976-77 season, Gh ranked a lowly No. 10 out of 15 daytime dramas. (CBS’s As the World Turns dominated for nearly two decades.) That changed...

When General Hospital cast and writers appeared at the Television Critics Association winter press tour to celebrate the ABC serial’s 60th anniversary, it was inevitable that one of the drama’s most controversial storylines would get revisited.
Genie Francis was among the show’s TCA panelists (along with Maurice Benard, Kristina Wagner, Rebecca Herbst, Donnell Turner, Nicholas Chavez and Tabyana Ali, EP Frank Valentini and co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor). And shortly after Francis fielded a question about Luke and Laura’s 1981 wedding (which drew 30 million viewers), she and others were asked to comment on how...
