Right up until the day Donald Trump’s federal indictment was unsealed, the legal team tasked with defending him was engaged in petty internal feuds — including fights over TV appearances, accusations of disloyalty, and even a so-called “coup,” three people familiar with the situation, as well as others on or close to Trump’s legal defense, tell Rolling Stone.
The clashes were dramatic enough that Friday, hours before Trump’s federal indictment in the Mar-a-Lago documents probe was unsealed, top lawyers John Rowley and Jim Trusty abruptly resigned. The resignations...

Donald Trump isn’t the only individual to be indicted in the Justice Department’s probe into the former president’s handling of classified documents. Trump revealed on Friday that one of his aides, Walt Nauta, has also been charged.
“I have just learned that the ‘Thugs’ from the Department of Injustice will be indicting a wonderful man, Walt Nauta, a member of the U.S. Navy, who served proudly with me in the White House, retired as Senior Chief, and then transitioned into private life as a personal aide,” Trump wrote.

Update, 5:38 a.m. Pt, Friday: Donald Trump’s federal indictment has not yet been unsealed, but some details are emerging of what evidence the Justice Department’s special counsel Jack Smith has gathered.
CNN reported on Friday that it obtained the transcript of an audio recording in which Trump, at a meeting in 2021 when he was out of office, admitted that he retained military information that he had not declassified.
“As president, I could have declassified, but now I can’t,” Trump said, according to CNN. Trump was discussing a classified document about an attack on Iran, according to the network.
The audio recording was obtained by prosecutors, but it is unclear if it is a factor in the indictment.
Trump has previously claimed that the documents seized at Mar-a-Lago were declassified, but that defense has been questioned given the lack of a record of such a move when...

James Trusty, an attorney representing former President Donald Trump regarding his alleged mishandling of classified documents, didn’t condemn his client calling out the wife and daughter of the judge overseeing his criminal trial in Manhattan over a hush money payment.
Trump pleaded not guilty Tuesday to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, appearing before Judge Juan Merchan, who also oversaw the criminal trial of the Trump Organization and of the entity’s former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg. In a speech to supporters later that night at Mar-a-Lago, Trump criticized not only Merchan,...

Updated with latest: Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Tuesday elaborated on the indictment brought against former President Donald Trump, characterizing it as a scheme to keep damaging information about an alleged affair with Stormy Daniels from the voting public.
Trump today pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment of falsifying business records. The charges allege that he was trying to cover up the payments he ultimately made to Daniels via his then-attorney, Michael Cohen.
“At its core, this case today is one with allegations like so many of our white collar cases, allegations that someone lied again and again to protect their interests and evade the laws to which we are all held accountable,” Bragg said.
He said that New York state election law “makes it a crime to conspire to promote a candidacy by unlawful means.” He also alleged that Trump planned to make false statements to tax...

Since early January, several of Donald Trump’s close advisers, including some of his own lawyers, have met with the former president to deliver him the same stark warning. In at least three meetings this year, according to two sources familiar with the matter, legal and political counselors to Trump have urged him to dump Evan Corcoran, one of the ex-president’s top attorneys in the federal probe into Trump’s handling of classified documents.
