Elle Marja Eira’s directorial debut, Stolen, is a film about environmentalism, industrialization, and indigenous identity. This thriller drama shows the lives of the Sami people, an indigenous ethnicity from northern Norway and Sweden, and their struggles with a world modernizing constantly. Traditionally reindeer herders by profession, these people try to maintain their way of life, which has been subjected to endangerment in recent times. At its core, Stolen depicts an environmentalist theme by showing the sadistic cruelty of humankind against nature. Moreover, through Elsa’s story as a Sami girl, this movie shows xenophobia and ethnocentric discrimination against her people by the non-indigenous communities as well as national authorities.

Netflix is adapting Ann-Helén Laestadius novel Stolen, in which a young woman struggles to defend her indigenous heritage, into a film.
Shooting will begin in Sapmi (formerly known as Lapland) next year, with Elle Márjá Eira directing and Peter Biro writing. Award-winning writer Laestadius will exec produce.
Airing in 2024, the film will portray a young woman’s struggle to defend her indigenous heritage in a world where xenophobia is on the rise, climate change is threatening reindeer herding, and young people choose suicide in the face of collective desperation.

The Norwegian International Film Festival kicked off on Saturday its 49th edition in the coastal town of Haugesund, an occasion for industry filmgoers and Nordic film aficionados to discover new projects from the region’s top talent.
One of festival’s highlights is its Next Nordic Generation– a selection of the best graduation short films from various Nordic film schools.
10 shorts were selected this year made by creatives perceived as some of the region’s filmmakers of tomorrow.
Three of the films come from Westerdals, Kristiania University College in Oslo, Norway, another trio from Aalto Elo Film School in Helsinki, Finland, and two each from Hdk-Valand at the University of Göteborg, Sweden and The National Film School of Denmark in Copenhagen.
