Chicago – Director Michelle Bossy has just put her first feature film into festivals – “Under the Lantern Lit Sky.” But she also submitted her latest short film – the aptly entitled ‘klutz.,” in this case at the recent 24th Dances With Films Festival in Los Angeles. Michelle Bossy is a innovative and sensitive up-and-comer, and in “klutz.” she takes on the delicate subject of mourning.
The film’s character, Zowie (Malka Wallick), is struggling as a first time novelist when she falls into a depression spiral after the sudden death of her sister Lida (Mara Kassin). Zowie also seemingly loses her gravitational pull as a supernatural side effect of her grief, which allows for her to reconnect with Lida within another plane. When present, Lida acts as a force of nature and attempts – in her very “alive” way – to get Zowie back on her feet and to focus on her writing.

Women are dominating the Chilean film industry more than ever, replicating what is happening across most of Latin America. In Bolivia, 85% of the producers are said to be women and in Mexico, nearly half of the audiovisual workforce is female. Of the 10 key Chilean titles participating at the Marché du Film Online Producers Network Spotlight this year, eight are produced by women.
Films made by this ever-growing generation of female producers are “ever more robust, of a larger caliber, with big casts, and made in international co-production, not small films made with just Chilean funding,” says Constanza Arena, executive director of Chilean film-tv promotion board CinemaChile. She cites Florencia Larrea’s “My Tender Matador,” Macarena Lopez’s “La Felicidad,” Gabriela Sandoval’s “Jailbreak Pact” and Karina Jury’s “Vera de Verdad,” co-produced with Italy and selected for the Marché du Film’s Frontières genre showcase.

For more than 20 years, Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio has been trying to figure out a way to use the Alan Parsons Project's "Time" in one of his movies. "When I made my first short film in 1996, I tried to buy that song and I couldn't afford it," the filmmaker says of the British art-rock band's 1981 easy-listening hit, a celestial lament about a love affair torn asunder by distance and circumstance. "I have loved it forever. I consider it a masterpiece. It perfectly combines human [connection] with a cosmic backdrop." Told that...
