A year after hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, and only a few weeks after Kendrick Lamar’s feud with Drake culminated in a chart-topping track where he calls Drake a “colonizer,” the hottest topic on the rap internet right now is a white kid from St. Louis rapping over vintage-sounding Atlanta rap beats. Ian, whose debut mixtape, Valedictorian, caps off a run of viral hits that have quickly caught the attention and ire of rap fans online, leans heavily into the dissonance between his look and his sound. In the video...

How does dance music sensation John Summit pregame his set at one of Las Vegas’ most popular nightclubs the Friday before the Super Bowl? Laying in bed, eating an airport sandwich.
But just because he’s horizontal doesn’t mean he’s unproductive. In fact, he’s spending his time cooking up something new that could be house music’s next smash hit — or at least a highlight of what his fans hear that night. “I try to make a new song for every set,” Summit, 29, says. “I usually make...

YouTube‘s celebration of hip-hop’s 50th birthday is bringing some rewards to artists big and small. The platform has revealed the musicians who make up the 2024 class of the Fifty Deep grant program.
The members of the Fifty Deep class will get assistance from YouTube through several initiatives. They will receive creative grants to go along with promotional support and an array of channel optimization tools. YouTube also plans to host songwriting sessions for the cohort while also providing them with A&r opportunities and early access to new products and features.
The Fifty Deep class resembles previous cohorts that participated in the #YouTubeBlack initiative, which boosted artists and creators of color in the YouTube community. The Sunday scaries hit a few days early for Lil Yachty. The rapper has shared his latest single, “A Cold Sunday,” a rumination on weathering heartbreak and the fluctuating value of material possessions. The record arrives alongside an Amd Visuals-directed music video that captures Lil Yachty in five different frames from five different angles.
“I ran thirty million in the ground, baby, now I’m back up/She a city girl, I’m the real reason that she act up,” he raps early on the song, which comes in at under two minutes in length.

Drake has unveiled Scary Hours 3, featuring six new songs.
The third installment in the Scary Hours series arrives as an expansion of the rapper’s latest album, For All the Dogs, which itself dropped just a month ago. Now– amidst hiatus-inducing tummy troubles – the new songs were written and recorded over a period of just five days, and include the track “Evil Ways,” featuring J. Cole. The previous two Scary Hours releases touted big hits, including 2018’s “God’s Plan,” as well as 2021’s “Wants and Needs” featuring Lil Baby and “What’s Next.”

Drake assured fans that For All the Dogs would mark the return of the “old Drake.” But the Mc who explored his emotions with uncommon sensitivity on Take Care and Nothing Was the Same is nowhere to be found on his eighth studio album. Unless by the “old Drake” he meant the 12-year-old Drake, as For All the Dogs registers less as a sign of artistic growth than the idea of what a teenage boy considers cool: empty flexes about wealth and status, acting like a hardass, and, of course, ceaseless misogyny under the guise of being “one of the boys.” If anything, the album reassures listeners that Drake, no matter how hard he vows to change, is more or less stuck in his ways.

Fourteen years after Drake broke through with his So Far Gone mixtape, public reaction to his new projects has grown predictable. The Toronto rapper/singer will run up numbers on Spotify and Apple Music because, well, he’s the king of streaming. A social-media war will inevitably break out over the quality of his music, his reputed softness in comparison to past street-hardened GOATs, and his beefs with sundry bold-faced rivals. In recent months, those online debates have grown coarse and self-righteous, thanks to an unfortunate lyrical shift towards fellating...

Summer is ending but Drake is only just getting started. After weeks of teasing, the rapper has finally released For All the Dogs, his eighth studio album. His third record to be released in the last two years — following Honestly, Nevermind and the 21 Savage-assisted collaborative album Her Loss — arrives as a companion piece to Titles Ruin Everything, the poetry book he released back in June.
“I made an album to go with the book,” Drake wrote on the website for the poetry collection. “They say they miss the old Drake girl don’t tempt me.

Ok, let's be honest - did we really expect the MTV VMAs, of all award shows, to deliver the best hip-hop 50 tribute of the year? The "all-star finale performance" MTV touted ahead of the Sept. 12 event included Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Dmc (of Run-d.M.C.), Doug E. Fresh, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as performers. The 10-minute tribute intended to honor the culture's entire 50-year history, but with a lineup that shallow (and New York-skewed), is that even possible?
The VMAs aren't alone: it seems every award show's hip-hop 50 tribute has missed the mark this year. The Grammys kicked off the milestone celebration in February with an old school-meets-new-school performance, which featured everyone from Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul to Lil Baby, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert. The BET Awards followed suit in June with a "non-stop party" of medley performances from folks like Warren G,...

Only a select few rappers can move seamlessly from what is considered rap’s underground into a successful mainstream career. Chicago rapper Lucki’s 2022 project Flawless Like Me reached number 12 on the Billboard 200, while his new highly anticipated album S*ex M*ney Dr*gs, released last week, earned him his highest streaming day of all time on Spotify with 8 million streams. It’s a culmination of a 10-year run of projects that have earned Lucki one of rap’s most loyal fanbases, on par with Playboi Carti’s infamous army of stans.

After a whirlwind breakout year, GloRilla is finally settling into her fame. The Memphis native, 23, burst onto the music scene seemingly overnight in April 2022 after the astronomical success of her now-certified gold hit "F.N.F. (Let's Go)." "The biggest change [in my life] is really traveling the world."

When Ohio-born rapper Trippie Redd first burst onto the scene in 2017, Donald J. Trump was about to start his first presidential term, Juice Wrld and XXXTentacion were alive, and SoundCloud rap was the new transgressive genre making waves. Back then, Redd contributed to the urgent-sounding genre with his first commercial mixtape, A Love Letter to You. A Love Letter to You was Soundcloud rap, but it also strategized Redd’s rapping ability, first and foremost; songs would be showcases. “Can You Rap Like This?” is a boom bap song, reminding...

Trippie Redd is one of the brightest lights of the first wave of SoundCloud rap, the scene of boundary-pushing, genre-flouting teenagers who were on the cutting edge of music in the mid-2010s. From his debut mixtape, A Love Letter to You, he earned a reputation as an artistic maverick, equally curious exploring “Love Scars” as the cloudy trap of “Romeo & Juliet,” or even traditionalist rap on “Can You Rap Like Me?“

The sound of the near future in film and TV has typically been characterised by dramatic synths that reflect the conflict between man and machine. Think of Vangelis’s atmospheric Blade Runner score with its memorable Yamaha Cs-80 synthesiser, or the sparse orchestral cues heard in more recent projects such as The Handmaid’s Tale. Now, a new series is about to take a very different route.
Jungle is the debut TV project from burgeoning production company Nothing Lost, best known for directing London rapper Big Tobz’s “Woke” music video, which got them on the shortlist for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Creators Class of 2019. Available on Amazon Prime Video now, the show follows a group of strangers whose lives are interconnected by a series of bizarre events.

On a recent Wednesday night in Brooklyn, “Hey there, Delilah, what’s it like in New York City?” bellowed from the speakers at Baby’s All Right. Sheri Easterling paraded around her new young boyfriend, the rapper Yung Gravy and got some attention with a Pda on the red carpet of the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.
Easterling is the mother of the influencer Addison Rae and split from her husband Monty Lopez after allegations he had an affair with a young woman.
Easterling may be going for a little old-fashioned revenge, or Easterling, 42, is just smitten with her new boyfriend, whose full name is Matthew Raymond Hauri, 26. Hauri wasn’t nominated in the show, but his profile as a rapper has been slowly rising over the past few years.
Hauri opened up about the relationship in a red carpet interview. “We met online and we connected right away,” he said. “You know, I’m from the furthest north it gets, and she’s from the furthest south it gets.”

When the news broke in February that 18-year-old Jayquan McKenley, who recorded under the name Chii Wvttz, had been murdered in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, it sent ripples through a city already reeling from what seemed like one violent incident after another. Many seized on the slain teen’s affiliation with the burgeoning Brooklyn drill scene, seeing an inextricable link between the music and bloodshed — including Eric Adams, New York’s recently inaugurated mayor, who condemned drill as “alarming” and blamed it for inciting violence.

Chicago — Security, weed smoke, and “G-Fazos” — a local nickname for Air Force Ones, made famous by G Herbo — filled up the United Center on May 2. The arena has hosted historic events from homegrown talent like Derrick Rose and Kanye West before; this time, the crowds were there to see Lil Durk’s last stop on his 7220 tour, his biggest show ever in his hometown. This moment means a lot to Durk and his Otf crew, but also for the city of Chicago, the place that birthed drill, a subgenre that...

Chicago’s Lil Durk raps in a wavy warble that sounds like how a codeine high from a filled-to-the-brim double cup probably feels. But there’s emotion in his register—built up from a lifetime of scrapping it out on his city’s crime-ridden South Side. That Durk manages to make it melodic is part of his hardscrabble charm. Compared to Chief Keef’s minimalist psychopath musings, or G Herbo’s bar-heavy young Og reflections, the 29-year-old offers a mellow read on drill, which he helped pioneer back in the 2010s.

“Cupid,” a 1996 ballad from the R&b group 112, is as gorgeous as it is jarring. It comes on like a lullaby, with feathery guitar and handsome multi-part harmonies. But step into the song and you’re entering a place where sweet nothings are not to be trusted. Suspicion rules, so requests come with wild caveats: “Girl when I ask you to trust me, that doesn’t mean that I’m gonna cheat on you.” Communication between the characters has clearly been poisoned, but 112’s delivery remains unerringly sweet and endearingly naive,...

Drill rap music, which extolls violence in the pursuit of riches, is not something New York Mayor Eric Adams wants on social media.
Adams spoke out against the genre a day after he gave a speech about the death of 18-year-old drill rapper Jayquan McKenley, aka Chii Wvttz. He was shot and killed in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of New York City last Sunday.
Drill has moved from the underground into the mainstream in the last decade. Its rappers and producers include Chief Keef, Lil Durk, Lil Reese, Fredo Santana and others, most of them building a strong following on the internet thanks to social media. The genre has spawned regional scenes throughout the US and Europe.
Adams said he became aware of drill music thanks to his son, Jordan Coleman, who works at Jay-Z’s Roc-Nation. “My son sent me videos. It was alarming,” he said.
