On March 27, 2024, Ross Ulbricht expressed a birthday wish from prison. “Today, I turn 40,” Ulbricht had his family post on the Twitter account he uses to communicate with the outside world. “I pray I’ll get a second chance at freedom before this next decade ends.” He followed that up a couple of weeks later with a lament: “It’s been over 10 years since I’ve seen the night sky. This is one of the simple things I miss the most.”

The campaign of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that a fundraising email labeling the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot defendants as “activists” was a mistake.
These emails, which were sent to Kennedy’s supporters last week, called WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange a “political prisoner” and suggested that he and Capitol rioters were victims of an “outrageous miscarriage of justice.”
“Rarely do opposites attract, especially in Washington,” the email stated. “Yet regarding the case of Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder who is facing extradition to the U.S., both hard-right Marjorie Taylor Greene and hard-left Ilhan Omar Agree: We Must Free Assange Now!”
“The Brits want to make sure our government doesn’t kill Assange,” the letter claimed. “This is the reality that every American Citizen faces – from [Edward] Snowden to Julian Assange to the J6 activists sitting in a Washington D.C. jail cell stripped of their Constitutional liberties.”

Washington, Nov 8 (Ians) The US authorities have seized around 50,676 Bitcoin worth 3.36 billion stored in a circuit board hidden in the bottom of a popcorn tin in a bathroom closet.
The 32-year-old James Zhong from Georgia fraudulently obtained the Bitcoin from The Silk Road — a site on the dark web once called “the Amazon of drugs” — in 2012.
Zhong has now pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud in September 2012, when he unlawfully obtained over 50,000 Bitcoin from the Silk Road dark web internet marketplace, the US Department of Justice said in a statement late on Monday.
“Zhong committed wire fraud over a decade ago when he stole approximately 50,000 Bitcoin from the Silk Road. For almost 10 years, the whereabouts of this massive chunk of missing Bitcoin had ballooned into an over 3.3 billion mystery,” said US Attorney Damian Williams.
Thanks to state-of-the-art cryptocurrency tracing and good old-fashioned police work, law enforcement located and recovered this impressive cache of crime proceeds.

Taking a fanboy stance on Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht doesn’t help Tiller Russell’s underpowered Silicon Valley crime drama
Here’s an unthrilling, bland drama about the rise and fall of Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind the illegal online drug emporium Silk Road (described by the FBI as “the Amazon of drug sites”). Between 2011 and 2013, PhD dropout Ulbricht made millions of dollars in commissions from users on the dark web anonymously buying and selling drugs. Then he got busted.
If you consider how gripping David Fincher made a bunch of geeks in hoodies talking about algorithms look in The Social Network, the Ulbricht story – involving an FBI manhunt and allegations of murder-for-hire – should be a doddle. But watching Silk Road is a bit like rolling a joint only to find the leafy green substance you’ve been sold is oregano. The highs just don’t come.

Nick Robinson, the wholesome, all-American-seeming star of “Love, Simon” and “Jurassic World,” plays an unlikely drug trafficker in “Silk Road.”
The film tells the true story of Ross Ulbricht’s unlikely rise to fortune and infamy as the founder a dark web market. Dubbed the Silk Road, Ulbricht’s creation gave users the ability to buy everything from illegal narcotics to firearms and triggered an international manhunt that eventually led to his arrest and 2015 conviction. Robinson was drawn to playing Ulbricht because he wanted to explore how this libertarian true believer lost his moral compass. “Silk Road,” which is is directed by Tiller Russell and co-stars Jason Clarke, is currently available on-demand. Robinson spoke to Variety about how he prepared to play Robinson, what he thinks of his ideology, as well as what’s next for “Love, Victor,” the Hulu spinoff of “Love, Simon” that he guest starred on and produced.

Nick Robinson knew he wouldn’t have access to Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, but he had the next best thing: his chat logs. Adapted from David Kushner’s Rolling Stone article, Dead End on Silk Road, Robinson stars as Ulbricht in Tiller Russell’s Silk Road, which chronicles the quick rise and fall of the twenty-something millennial and his black market version of eBay. With years’ worth of transcripts and journal entries at his disposal, Robinson was able to track Ulbricht’s innermost thoughts as he fell deeper and deeper into the illicit community he created.

Photo: 'Silk Road'/Lionsgate Director Tiller Russell’s newest film ‘Silk Road’ is a dramatic feature inspired by a true story. Centered around Ross Ulbricht, played by Nick Robinson’), ‘Silk Road’ tells the story of the rise of a darknet website named after the trade routes that linked the East and the West. Opposite Robinson is the brilliant Jason Clarke, who plays a DEA Agent named Rick Bowden, the main antagonist. While Robinson made his film debut in 2013, Clarke is a veteran actor with over 70 acting credits to his name. Best known for his frequent antagonist roles, Clarke is a magnetic force anytime he graces the screen. His experience pairs well with the natural charisma of Robinson and together the two make the movie a very powerful experience. Writer, director, and producer Tiller Russell has a thing for criminals. Over the year's he has produced and directed a variety of features, documentaries, and TV series about everything from inmates on a sports team to The Night Stalker.
Russell's latest film Silk Road is a hybrid; on the one hand a well-researched documentary about Ross Ulbricht, the founder, and creator of the infamous Silk Road, the first darknet marketplace that was a hub for selling illegal drugs. Not to mention that it made Ulbricht rich and on the other, a fictionalized police account of how he was taken down.

When a dramatic feature film gets made out of an investigative magazine article, there’s usually some conventional heroic hook to it. But not always. “Silk Road,” written and directed by Tiller Russell, is
During the two years of its existence, Silk Road was an underground Amazon or eBay of drugs — a platform where dealers and buyers could find each other, which meant that you could order a nicely priced, vacuum-sealed package of cannabis or Ecstasy or pharmaceutical-grade cocaine and have it delivered to your door through the U.S. Postal Service. The person who dreamed this all up, and ran the site under the cult-like pseudonym of the Dread Pirate Roberts, was Ross Ulbricht, a 26-year-old libertarian gadfly from Austin, Tex., who convinced himself that by creating an underground marketplace for illegal narcotics, he was striking a blow against the system.

A narration opens Tiller Russell’s Silk Road. A young man in a hoody, shades, and flip-flops walks San Francisco’s streets and discusses the barriers between the world as it is and the world that he wants. The world he wants is one of total autonomy and freedom from government control. “Every action we take outside government control strengthens the market and weakens the state,” he says. As a result, and as a way to “take back our liberty,” he creates Silk Road, a website where anyone can buy and sell anything anonymously. The film follows a naive, bright-eyed libertarian and the creation of the biggest online marketplace of illegal goods, the notorious criminal named Dread Pirate Roberts he becomes, and the subsequent investigation by law enforcement that follows. As David Kushner writes in the Rolling Stone article the film is based on, Silk Road “made Ross Ulbricht one...

Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) wanted to change the world. And he did. Whether you believe it was for the better (bringing the Dark Web and Tor into the mainstream via his anonymous marketplace Silk Road) or worse, the infrastructure he utilized coupled with the advantages afforded by Bitcoin ignited a firestorm of possibilities. Because at the center of it all was a desire to adhere to a Libertarian set of philosophies that shook the system and evaded the state. That the story has subsequently been reduced to “drugs-by-mail” is thus as much an in-road towards entertaining drama as a smokescreen away from governmental overreach.

"This guy's the first Millennial gangster." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a movie called Silk Road, telling the rise & fall story of the founder of the infamous darkweb drug website called "Silk Road". This hasn't premiered at any film festivals and is heading straight to VOD in February for any curious to watch. Philosophical 20-something Ross Ulbricht creates Silk Road, a dark net website that sells narcotics, while DEA agent Rick Bowden goes undercover to bring him in. Nick Robinson stars as Ross, who values freedom above all, and Jason Clarke co-stars as the DEA agent. It's a back-n-forth story about the two and how similar they are. Also starring Katie Aselton, Jimmi Simpson, Daniel David Stewart, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lexi Rabe, Will Ropp, with Paul Walter Hauser, and Alexandra Shipp. I really wish this looked better than it does; it's a cool story to tell, but this seems...

Many actors have survived the intensity of Hollywood fame with second careers, but few have followed a trajectory as fascinating as Alex Winter’s. After skyrocketing to stardom as Bill S. Preston opposite Keanu Reeves in 1989’s “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and its 1991 sequel, Winter grew disillusioned with the movie business. He grew sick of the pressures of the spotlight and, as he would reveal decades later, still contended with trauma of sexual assault experienced in his childhood. But Winter escaped through twin obsessions that would form his career: filmmaking and the internet.
Nearly 25 years after Winter gave up on professional acting, he’s enjoying a new life as a serious documentarian, with movies that untangle some of the thorniest questions surrounding modern technology. Following the Napster-focused “Downloaded” and the dark web portrait “Deep Web,” Winter has completed two new documentaries that reveal the intensity of his obsessions.

Much like the latter’s central through line Ross Ulbricht, Winter’s latest Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain focuses on educating outsiders by humanizing a disruptor targeted by those working to maintain status quo.

Vanity Fair Confidential this week looks at the rise and fall of Silk Road operator Ross Ulbricht, who went by the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts. The famous black-market site was first launched back in January 2011 and quickly became a worldwide center for selling drugs on the dark web. Its founder remained a mystery for months despite high-level investigations into who he was, with him only known in public by his alter-ego. However, in October 2013 the website was finally shut down with the FBI arresting Ulbright on charges of being its operator. During his trial, prosecutors linked the Silk Road […]
