Staffers at MTV’s comedy show focused on viral videos, Ridiculousness, have voted to unionize with the Writers Guild of America West.
In a National Labor Relations Board ballot count that occurred Monday in Los Angeles, eight creative consultants voted to join the WGA West, while none voted against, a spokesperson from the Nlrb shared on Tuesday. Two ballots were challenged and won’t be counted “because they aren’t determinative,” said Nlrb director and press secretary Kayla Blado.
The union and the employer now have five days to raise any objections, and if none are brought forth, the Ridiculousness union will be certified and can begin to bargain a first contract.
“Yesterday, my colleagues and I voted in favor of joining the Writers Guild of America West by the widest possible margin, 100%. This result really matters given the scare tactics used by the company in an attempt to disempower us and break our unity,...

August 31: The writers of MTV’s Ridiculousness are coming closer to being unionized.
The show’s writing team, which was behind over 230 episodes last year, has been going through the process to unionize over the last few months, hoping to join their scripted peers, who have been on strike since May, in the WGA.
The writers on the show, which regularly airs for over 100 hours a week on MTV, have now filed their ballots for an election with the National Labor Relations Board (Nlrb) and Deadline understands that a large majority of them have been cast to unionize.

There’s a running joke that the Grown Ups movies have kept the lights on at TBS since it first premiered. The same could easily be said for Ridiculousness and MTV, with reports that the network (still officially Music Television but that’s more of a technicality) uses the clip show to fill up more than 100 hours of programming each week. Taking a quick glance at the schedule, it will run from 5 p.m. Est on Sunday to 6:00 a.m. Est on Monday. So, yes, the writers – and, yes, there are writers – are overworked and underpaid, something they are no longer willing to keep quiet about.
One of the show’s contributors, Ally Maynard – who has nearly 300 episode credits to her name – recently said, “‘Unscripted’ television is very much scripted and our writing staff is fed up with being abused and underpaid by Paramount, MTV and Rob Dyrdek. We...

The writers of MTV’s unscripted series “Ridiculousness” have filed with the National Labor Relations Board to vote on unionization via a secret ballot, a rep from Nlrb told TheWrap on Thursday.
The MTV staple, which also has a number of spinoffs and foreign versions that air around the world, is hosted and produced by Rob Dyrdek, whose Superjacket Productions recently rebranded as Thrill One Media.
“‘Unscripted’ television is very much scripted and our writing staff is fed up with being abused and underpaid by Paramount, MTV and Rob Dyrdek,” writer Ally Maynard told Deadline, which first reported the story. “We produce the most profitable show currently on TV and yet we are paid 60% less than WGA writers that work for ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos.'”
A rep for Paramount took issue with Maynard’s statement, telling TheWrap that none of the writers on “Ridiculous” are directly employed by the studio or MTV.

Mark Duplass Faces Backlash Over Endorsing Conservative Ben Shapiro, James Gunn Comes to His Defense
James Gunn is coming to the defense of Mark Duplass after the indie filmmaker received extreme backlash online for endorsing conservative commentator and The Daily Wire editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro. Duplass took to Twitter on July 18 to tell his “fellow liberals” they should consider “crossing the aisle” and following Shapiro on Twitter.
“I don’t agree with him on much be he’s a genuine person who once helped me for no other reason than to be nice,” Duplass wrote on Twitter to his over 400,000 followers. “He doesn’t bend the truth. His intentions are good.”
Duplass’ advice was immediately slammed across social media. Numerous writers pointed to Shapiro’s history of publishing racist tweets, including one controversial post in which he blamed Trayvon Martin for getting himself shot and killed because he “took a man’s head and beat it on the pavement.” Duplass issued a defense of his original...
