“The longest [running] Black family drama on television leaves a legacy of knowing that these stories are worthy, knowing that there’s an audience for them,” declares producer/director DeMane Davis about the legacy that “Queen Sugar” will leave on the TV landscape. For our recent webchat she adds, “It’s not a show that has a lot of bells and whistles. It doesn’t need it because it has these faces. It has this skin. It has this hair and then it has these directors of photography,” she says, “who know how to light that skin, know how to get light into the eyes, so that you see the depths of someone and you see the layers. There’s nothing like this on television.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay are two of the creative leaders honored for Variety’s 2022 Power of Women presented by Lifetime. For more, click here.
Oprah Winfrey has spent most of her career talking, so it’s a little surprising that the only sound you hear from the porch of her second home in Maui is absolute silence. Forget about the ocean waves or rustling palm trees. Ok, if you’re lucky enough to hang with Oprah for an entire afternoon, this zen will be interrupted by the periodic squawking of wild roosters. In such a tranquil retreat, you can think clearly, cradled in the beauty of all that Hawaii has to offer.
It’s this very place of refuge, in fact, where Winfrey set a trap for filmmaker Ava DuVernay that would launch one of their greatest collaborations: OWN’s “Queen Sugar.”

Even if last season’s finale of the OWN drama Queen Sugar ended on a high note, with the Bordelon land being declared a historical landmark (and keeping the villainous Landrys from taking it), it’s safe to assume there’s more drama to come in the seventh and final season, which kicks off September 6. The series, created by Ava DuVernay and based on the novel by Natalie Baszile, has put the Bordelon siblings — Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph-Angel (Kofi Siriboe) — through the paces over six seasons and we can only hope there’s a happy ending in store for them all once the series finale arrives later this fall. Wesley tells TV Insider that playing Nova all these years has taught her much in her own life. “She’s taught me self-care. That’s a big thing I’ve taken away, is just learning how to...

“Queen Sugar” has been renewed for Season 7 at OWN, with that season set to be the show’s last. Writing on the new season has begun, with production set to begin in early 2022.
“To everything, there is a season,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making ‘Queen Sugar’ with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television. To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. ‘Queen Sugar’ has been one of the true joys of my career and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.

For cinematographer, Antonio Calvache, one of the most memorable moments of his career was when he first saw the area that would be used for shooting the sugar cane fields in “Queen Sugar.” “It’s a gift to be able to work in a project where the location has so much personality,” he tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematography panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). That location ended up serving as a huge influence, not just on him as a cinematographer, but the entire production. “It was our biggest source of inspiration for me and everybody in the team of ‘Queen Sugar’ to bring up the locals, these farms, the lushness and the history behind all of that.”

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of Queen Sugar’s Season 5 finale
“Looking back over the season, as emotional as it was for people to watch it when it aired, it was very emotional even when we shot it,” says Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes of the fifth season of the Ava DuVernay created series and its Onward finale last night.
After a 10-episode run that chronicled and detailed the coronavirus pandemic, police violence, the death of George Floyd, and the politics of division on Black America, the OWN drama based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel took the lacerated Bordelon siblings, their offspring, extended family and rural Louisiana community to an optimistic place, or sorts.
The DuVernay and showrunner Anthony Sparks co-penned Season 5 finale saw a Covid infected Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) reach out to ex-husband Davis West (Timon Kyle Durrent) and find new depths to the initial dismay of...

“Have you lost your mind?’ screams Dawn-Lyen Gardner’s Charley Bordelon in the upcoming fourth season of Queen Sugar.
One look at the new trailer (See Above) of the Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey executive produced Own drama certainly gives the impression that the world and the tight-knit Louisiana family have done just that. As was announced in March, with an all-female directed season and Anthony Sparks taking over as showrunner from Kat Candler, Queen Sugar returns for its fourth season on June 12.

“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today,” said Erik Logan, president, Own. “We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”

Writers move away from original text in second seasons
By randee dawn
When Netflix’s “The Sinner” wrapped its limited series run last September, the story seemed over, having followed its source material — Petra Hammesfahr’s novel by the same name — to its end.
Then in March, “Sinner” got a second season. Now what?
“It’s liberating, and it’s also terrifying,” says “Sinner” showrunner Derek Simonds. “We don’t even have goalposts we might have to incorporate from a book. Sure, it’s been very freeing, but the possibilities can be paralyzing. There are so many more roads to explore.”
Books are common enough for small-screen adaptations, traditionally ending up as one-off movies or, at best, miniseries. But as TV storytelling has pushed past those expected boundaries, showrunners and networks have realized that there’s no reason to abandon a whole world and characters just because the book concluded.

Exclusive: Back for its third season with a two-night premiere on May 29 and 30, Queen Sugar revealed a new perspective of sorts with some key art released today.
As the striving Bordelon siblings, their offspring, family and significant others look upward, the Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey executive produced Own series aims to kick it up a notch or two this year.
In that vein, Oscar nominee and Qs creator DuVernay asked photographer Osborne Macharia to bring his style of “Afrofuturism,” to the series’ Season 3 aesthetic. Having worked with the likes of Marvel on Black Panther, the New Orleans Queen Sugar shoot earlier this year was the first stateside session for Cannes Lion Award winner Macharia. Check out a look at the photo shoot in this behind the scenes video below:
Emphasizing principle of fiction, culture and identity via inclusion and narrative, it is pretty clear why DuVernay thought Nairobi-born Macharia...

Sugar may be sweet, but so is casting the next big hunk … just ask Ava DuVernay!
Kofi Siriboe — more like KoFine Siriboe — became a well-known heartthrob after appearing on DuVernay’s show, Queen Sugar. But it looks like she takes more than just the credit of casting him on the show.
“I will take responsibility for the current phenomenon that is Kofi Siriboe,” the 44-year old creator and director joked at Essence Festival that took place in New Orleans from June 29 – July 2. “The sweetness, the humility, the effort that he puts in to try and live a better life , really...

Oprah Winfrey named three books she would love to see adapted for Own, including Natalie Baszile's 2014 novel on which Queen Sugar is based. Speaking at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys event…...
