‘Batgirls’ is a comic book series published by DC Comics that follows the adventures of several characters who have assumed the Batgirl mantle. The series prominently features Barbara Gordon, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown. Barbara Gordon serves as a mentor to Cassandra and Stephanie, who take on the Batgirl roles more directly.
A notable aspect of the story is the relationship between Cassandra and Stephanie. The two bond through shared trauma and develop a beautiful friendship, which some fans began to interpret as a romantic relationship.

After a brief explosion during the pandemic, the comics industry is undergoing an existential crisis. It faces tumultuous sales at local comic shops, and the creative malaise audiences felt this year in the superhero movie genre is well-reflected on the publishing side of Marvel and DC, the industry’s two biggest publishers. To say that most of the output from these companies lacks spark is to put it mildly.
Still, there were plenty of bright spots this year for the medium. While Mattel’s Barbie was a hit on the big screen, it was Hasbro’s Transformers comic that ruled the toy-inspired genre in print. And though Marvel’s actual comic books struggled creatively this year, a number of creators managed to craft moving and innovative stories inspired by Marvel (see: I Am Stan, a graphic novel biography of Stan Lee and The Super Hero’s Journey).

Ever since the earliest days of cinema, Hollywood has loved celebrating the romantic genre. Rom-coms are a quintessential part of film history; the "Golden Age of Hollywood" featured the sly, romantic classics "It Happened One Night," "Roman Holiday," and "The Apartment."
While it's fun to see an idealized couple enjoying each other's company on screen, movie fans have to recognize that what they're seeing doesn't reflect reality. There's a sense of escapism that we're looking for when we're seeing a romantic film. You shouldn't have to worry about romantic movies making you feel insecure if you are single; in fact, there are many great films, both dramatic and comedic, that celebrate independence.
While these films are often comedies, living a single life is also the subject of many dramas and coming-of-age stories. It's a versatile subject, and being single is different depending on what age you are. Here are the 20 best movies about being single,...

If this is a dream, please, don’t wake me up. Deadline reports that Cathy Yan is developing a live-action series inspired by Yasutaka Tsutsui’s mind-bending novel Paprika. The project is happening at Amazon Studios and Hivemind, with Yan directing and executive producing.
According to the novel’s official description, Paprika presents an imaginative narrative about a psychiatric institute that develops technology to invade people’s dreams.
“When prototype models of a dream-invading device go missing at the Institute for Psychiatric Research, it transpires that someone is using them to drive people insane. Threatened personally and professionally, brilliant psychotherapist Atsuko Chiba has to journey into the world of fantasy to fight her mysterious opponents. As she delves deeper into the imagination, the borderline between dream and reality becomes increasingly blurred, and nightmares begin to leak into the everyday realm. The scene is set for a final showdown between the dream detective and her enemies,...

Ella Jay Basco has been cast as a recurring character in Nick Antosca’s upcoming Peacock limited series “A Friend of the Family,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The crime series is based on the true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan (Hendrix Yancey) was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by Robert “B” Berchtold (Jake Lacy), a charismatic, obsessed family “friend.” The Brobergs — devoted to their faith, family and community — were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart and turn their daughter against them. “A Friend of the Family” follows how their lives were permanently altered and how they survived.
Details of Basco’s character have yet to be announced.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month arrives on Sunday, and Ella Jay Basco is celebrating with “Bubble Tea,” the latest single from her upcoming album.
Best known for her role as Cassandra Cain in the 2020 superhero film “Birds of Prey,” Basco got her start as a child actor in show’s like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Veep.” But after “Birds of Prey,” she began exploring music, releasing an EP “Middle School” when she was just 13. Half-Korean and half-Filipino, Basco often draws upon her heritage and culture when constructing her songs. One of her songs from her debut EP, “The Filipino Song,” describes the process of explaining her heritage to someone meeting her family for the first time. Another, “Nadu” (or “Me Too”) is sung entirely in Korean.
“I actually, unfortunately, don’t speak Korean, but I learned Korean for the song,” Basco tells Variety. “I love incorporating different pieces of my culture,...

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 4 Episode 6
It doesn’t take a lot to bring me back in, and Young Justice: Phantoms found the sweet spot this week with “Artemis Through the Looking Glass.” It turns out all they needed to do was toss me a couple of crumbs of Cassandra Cain content and everything would be better.
It helps that this week was actually animated. The story still feels rushed, but the kinetic energy of the show is back to its normal level. A huge chunk of the episode is dedicated to a fight between Black Spider (Young Justice’s Spectacular Spider-Man knockoff) and Rictus from the League of Shadows, and Tigress, Onyx, Scandal Savage, Orphan, and Cheshire on the other side. Tigress had brought in Cheshire last week to help her figure out which of Onyx and Scandal was a potential mole, and they...

Holy diversity, Batman! Gotham just got a whole lot more inclusive, thanks to the new Cartoon Network preschool series Batwheels.
Described as an animated action-adventure comedy about “sentient super-powered crime-fighting vehicles,” Batwheels has recruited Academy Award-nominated actor Ethan Hawke to voice Batman and Aj Hudson (who played young Chidi on The Good Place) as the voice of Duke Thomas. He’s the first Black character to don the Robin “R” in DC Comics history.

Cartoonito, WarnerMedia Kids & Family’s new preschool programming block, launched Monday on HBO Max and Cartoon Network and used the occasion to reveal that it has set casts for a pair of animated projects — a Batwheels series that will feature Ethan Hawke as the voice of Batman and its Mo Willems one-hour rock opera Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Underground Rock Experience. It also greenlighted the first preschool animated series starring Tom and Jerry.
The news came today as part of a live virtual event celebrating the new block, which features a fall slate of 20 new series. Within two years, the company said, the slate of originals will reach 50 shows.

Warner Bros. and DC Films are moving forward with a Black Canary movie at HBO Max with Jurnee Smollett starring and Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green writing. Sue Kroll will produce the Black Canary movie under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner, having also produced Birds of Prey.
While plot details of this pic are unknown, the film is a spin-off of Birds of Prey, which featured characters Harley Quinn, the Huntress, and Cassandra Cain.
This news follows the announcement of Batgirl and Blue Beetle gaining momentum, both of which would premiere on HBO Max
Green and Smollett are both repped by CAA with Smollett also repped by Management 360. Cinelinx first reported the news of a Black Canary project.

Misha Green is reuniting with her Lovecraft Country collaborator Jurnee Smollett for a DC movie project featuring heroine Black Canary, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The project, which is in early development at HBO Max, is a spinoff from Warner Bros.’s 2020 DC movie Birds of Prey which featured characters Harley Quinn, the Huntress, and Cassandra Cain. Also in the cast of heroes was Canary, played by Smollett.
Green will write the script for the feature, with Smollett due to reprise her role. Sur Kroll, who produced Prey, will produce Canary.

The future of Margot Robbie‘s DC Comics character Harley Quinn is a little unclear at the moment, outside of her upcoming appearance in James Gunn‘s “The Suicide Squad,” a sort of soft reboot-y sequel to the David Ayer film from 2016. While Cathy Yan‘s “Birds of Prey” was originally billed as a solo Harley Quinn film, it ultimately became another group lineup with Quinn partnering up with female characters such as Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya, and the young Cassandra Cain.

Birds of Prey was one of the best films of 2020—a bright, bold super-powered film that blew the Bechdel Test right out of the water in fun, unexpected, and creative ways (I am still not over the mid-fight hair elastic request). Unfortunately, the R-rated, Harley Quinn-driven girl gang movie did not blow the box office away. While our very own David Crow wrote an excellent piece about how Birds of Prey was not the financial flop that parts of the media made it out to be, it wasn’t the next Deadpool either, leaving the future of this corner of the Dceu in question.
While Harley Quinn will be back on the big screen in the upcoming The Suicide Squad, she won’t be surrounded by her girl gang, but rather a new motley crew. As part of our Den of Geek magazine The Suicide Squad cover story, we asked...

When it comes to over-sized special edition comics, DC seemingly can’t wait to whip up a steady stream of one after another. That’s not a complaint, mind you, just an observation. These 80 Page Giants must be good-sellers for DC, and although nearly 10 dollars a go, they are good value for the reader. You get to see a whole load of creators jamming together on more characters than you can shake a stick at, and the odds are that you will enjoy the majority of the stories, if not all. DC do enjoy their themed specials as well, and I must admit to being a sucker for things like Halloween and Christmas specials down the years, and I’m no different now. This Special gives us 10 short and hopefully sweet peeks into the more mysterious corners of the DC Universe,...

The Joker War rages on in Gotham, and ahead of the release of Batman: The Joker War Zone, DC shared new information about the tie-in book’s contents. Guess what that means? If you guessed “James Stokoe drawing a Clownhunter story”, please leave next Wednesday’s Powerball numbers in the comments.
The 48-page book has five announced stories. The first looks at Poison Ivy’s return to Gotham (which happened in Batman #98). It’s called “Ashes of Eden,” written by Sam Johns and drawn by Laura Braga (Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica). As you can see from the preview pages, Braga has a vaguely Amanda Conner feel to her art that should play well in such an exaggerated setting.
The second story is the aforementioned Clownhunter feature, by regular Batman writer and Joker War mastermind James Tynion IV and world renowned Xenomorph artist James Stokoe, and it’s just ridiculous.

Sony’s long-in-the-works “suite” of TV series based on Marvel characters controlled by the studio is getting closer to reality.
I hear Sony is in talks with Amazon to be the SVOD distributor of the high-profile package of shows, which includes multiple titles. The first, which was identified by Sony Pictures TV about a year ago and had been in development at the studio, is Silk. Lauren Moon, a writer on Sony TV’s Netflix series Atypical, wrote the TV adaptation based on the Korean-American comic book superhero, created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos.
Silk would mark one of the first comic book series led by an Asian-American character. There have been many Asian comic book characters in TV series and in film. Often times they are seen as a supporting character or part of a larger ensemble. This dates all the way back to Bruce Lee in the 1960s Green Hornet series.

The move by Batwoman from seasons 1 to 2 has been more difficult than most shows, due to the shock departure of Ruby Rose from the lead role. Throw in Covid-19 delays and some fan backlash to the new casting for the program, and it’s not unreasonable to assume that The CW want to put 2020 behind them. In the meantime, we now have a first look at Batwoman‘s second go-around via a poster, following on from other series teases in recent weeks.
As with the other images we’ve had so far from the Arrowverse, the Batwoman promo, available below, doesn’t give us too much to go on: the Bat-Signal features prominently against panels from the comic books, including the main character and a man who may be taking a blow to the face. Still, the presence of iconic Gotham iconography bodes well for a series that regularly wove...

Slade Wilson has a complicated family life. He’s the premier assassin in the DC Universe, with super powers and a big beefy sword and a butler with wit sharper than Slade’s sword. He’s would seem to be the ideal Batman foil, but instead he’s the primary villain of the Teen Titans, and especially Robins in all their varying incarnations. And most of that rivalry comes from Slade’s dysfunctional family, which you can get a glimpse of in this exclusive clip from the upcoming DC animated feature, Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons.
The movie looks to be a little bit about Deathstroke’s origin story, and a lot about his messed up relationship with Adeline, his ex-wife; and his kids, Grant, Rose and Joseph. By their superhero names, the kids are Ravager, Ravager, and Jericho.
This clip pits Rose, in full H.I.V.E. armor and in the H.

Arrowverse fans have so many questions going into Batwoman season 2, which will star Javicia Leslie as the titular Crimson Knight in place of Ruby Rose, who exited the show after its first year.
Leslie will be playing an original character for the screen, Ryan Wilder. And as there’s no source material to base the transition from Kate Kane to Ryan on, it’s hard to see how the series will handle the handover of the cape and the cowl.
Even though Wilder is not from the comics, it seems Batwoman will still take inspiration from the pages of DC for its second season. At least, that’s according to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who previously told us Kevin Conroy was playing Kingdom Come Batman in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and that an Arrow spinoff is in the works, both of which were correct – who say that...

DC Comics' "Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey" #2, available June 23, 2020, is written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, with illustrations by Conner and covers by Conner and Arthur Adams:
"...over the course of her sleazy career, 'Harley Quinn' has met pretty much every super-villain who ever worked in 'Gotham City'. Some hate her. Some love her. But none of that's gonna' matter once they see how many zeroes there are on the bounty 'The Joker' is offering for her demise.
"Meanwhile, 'Cassandra Cain' finds herself in the unenviable position of being Harley Quinn’s bodyguard, but could this be her opportunity to learn a little about loosening up? If she's currently wound too tight, then just sit next to 'Auntie Harley'. She's got more than her share of loose screws..."

The brains behind the Dceu have proven that they’re not exactly against the idea of deviating from their original plans for the shared universe, and the franchise’s current trajectory looks a lot different from how it was originally mapped out when they first announced a huge slate of movies back in 2014.
Zack Snyder still hasn’t finished Justice League, although admittedly there was a lengthy Joss Whedon-led detour that eventually brought the project full circle after a relentless fan campaign, and while Henry Cavill may have finally committed his future to the Dceu after much speculation, it still doesn’t look like that Man of Steel sequel will be happening anytime soon, either.
Batman is already in the midst of another reboot, Jared Leto’s Joker has quietly been swept under the rug, and the previously announced Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern and Gotham City Sirens movies are...

The new lead of the CW’s Batwoman will not be Kate Kane. The show has opted to go with a new character in the title role following the exit of star Ruby Rose, sources confirm to Deadline. The show was expected to go for a new identity of Batwoman, which is a far more elegant way of replacing a lead than straight-out recasting, especially given the fact that comic book canon is built on superheroes having multiple alter egos.
In a casting notice, a copy of which was obtained by Deadline, the new lead character is named Ryan Wilder and is younger than Katy Kane — she is in her mid-to late 20s. It is unclear whether Ryan is a newly created character or a code name for an existing DC character, but Season 2 of the CW show will chronicle how she becomes Batwoman.

Warner Brothers and DC’s upcoming Flash film has been promising to continue DC’s trend of cosmic crises. We know that the pic will portray its titular speedster’s habit of getting caught up in canon-altering time travel shenanigans and that several events from previous movies in the franchise will be altered or undone thanks to the actions of Barry Allen.
Now, what exactly all these alterations will be, we don’t know for sure, but We Got This Covered has recently heard from our sources – the same ones who told us a Justice League Dark show is coming to HBO Max and that Viola Davis was returning for The Suicide Squad – that one of the retcons currently planned for the Dceu will be the death of iconic Batman villain Black Mask, whose cinematic debut and demise both occurred in this year’s Birds of Prey.

The Dceu isn’t too worried about interconnectivity anymore, with most of its movies existing in their bubbles at this point, but there is a common thread running through Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Suicide Squad. And that’s Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Slightly unexpectedly, her recent all-girl team-up movie didn’t sow the seeds for the Task Force X sequel, so fans have wondered if it actually takes place prior to BoP in the timeline.
Writer/director James Gunn has all but spelled it out for us, though. In one of his regular Q&As with fans on Instagram, the filmmaker was asked last night whether his movie takes place after Birds of Prey. Gunn didn’t dive into the ins and outs of it, but he did say: “Tss takes place in the year it comes out.” In other words, yes. By the sounds of it,...

I pity Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn for not being able to find its audience, having the misfortune of opening just as the pandemic entered the news. Shunted to streaming, it’s languished and honestly, it’s entertaining and fun.
It’s not as good as anticipated.
Long in development, the movie was the brainchild of Margot Robbie, who immortalized the live-action version in 2016’s Suicide Squad misfire. Her role was largely inspired on the New 52/Rebirth take on the character, more Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti than Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. She was certainly the best thing about the movie so a spinoff featuring her and some of DC Comics’ other heroines sounded great.

DC's zombie smash is back for another go, this time with more villains, including Deathstroke. And orphans. And Cassandra Cain Batgirl.
The best zombie stories always provide a mix of unrepentant storytelling, over the top gore, and psychologically screwed up moral choices for the characters -- think the zombie baby in Dawn of the Dead, or pick a moment at random from The Walking Dead.
DC Comics' zombie thriller DCeased had its fair share of those psychological moments, including the climax of the story, where Jon Kent had to fight off his zombified father just before the readers discovered there was a cure. That book's follow up, DCeased: Unkillables, is surely not going to skimp on them either.
“For the psychological aspect, I rely on my writer to guide me in the story,” Unkillables artist Karl Mostert tells us in an interview. “Tom Taylor [writer of both DCeased and Unkillables] has done...

The new Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is stacked with A-list actors, but one of the biggest roles in the movie is actually played by a relatively unknown actress. 13-year-old Korean-Filipino actress Ella Jay Basco plays Cassandra Cain (aka Batgirl), who must be protected from the evil Black Mask by Harley Quinn and her new girl gang. Cassandra Cain definitely marks Ella's biggest role to date, but the young actress has made several TV appearances before, and we have a feeling this major film role is just the start for her. Here's everything you should know about the up-and-coming actress before Birds of Prey hits theaters on Feb. 7.

Margot Robbie has finally been spotted shooting The Suicide Squad this week, revealing Harley Quinn’s revamped look for what will be her third Dceu appearance. In contrast to the pink and blue pigtails she’s had in the past two movies – Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey – pics from filming in Panama have unveiled Harley’s new red and black ‘do, a look that’s pulled straight from the comics.
This new image – seen below – gives us a clearer glimpse at Harley’s appearance in the film. As you can see, the photo captures Robbie in between filming as she follows writer/director James Gunn through the set. Given her red dress, fans are theorizing that Harley might masquerade as a flamenco dancer for a portion of the movie. Maybe it’s in order to steal a spear? After all, a previously surfaced video saw Harley dressed the same...

The awards season ended with a bang as Hollywood celebrated Lulu Wang’s The Farewell winning Best Feature and Zhao Shuzhen nabbing Best Supporting Actress at the Independent Spirit Awards while Bong Joon-ho’s peachy dark comedy masterpiece about social class made history at the Academy Awards, becoming the first non-English speaking film to win Best Picture. The South Korean film also made strides, winning Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. The huge wins for The Farewell and Parasite were benchmarks for Asians and Asian Americans, but just a week prior, Birds of Prey was released in theaters. On the surface, the Warner Bros. pic may seem like an action-packed, candy-coated mind trip of comic book movie, but the movie is a nuanced touchstone of Asian American representation — and even though it focuses on Harley Quinn’s narrative, the story would be nothing without Cassandra Cain,...

Ranked as the lowest opening weekend gross for any 'DC Extended Universe' film, director Cathy Yan's R-rated, $85 million budgeted "Birds of Prey" feature, based on the DC Comics characters, earned $33 million domestic and $46 million international for a worldwide total of $79 million, prompting Warners to retitle the film as "Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey", banking on the star power of actress Margot Robbie:
Notwithstanding Robbie's bubbly personality, obvious beauty and recent Oscar-nominated turn in the anti-Fox News box office loser "Bombshell", it seems fanboys prefer their super-powered females as 'companions' rather than 'competitors' in the brains and brawn department.
"...since the events of 'Suicide Squad', 'Batman' has disappeared, leaving 'Gotham City' unprotected from crime...
"...while 'Harley Quinn' has left the 'Joker'. Then when young 'Cassandra Cain comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord 'Black Mask'...
"...Harley joins forces with 'Black Canary', 'Huntress'...
"....and 'Renee Montoya' to help protect her.

Birds of Prey and The Avengers pretty much sit at opposite ends of the comic book movie genre. Apart from the whole Marvel/DC thing, BoP is much more irreverent in tone, the ensemble cast is made up of lesser-known characters and its budget is much smaller than the McU’s mega blockbuster. However, they have one notable similarity that you might have missed, as both the Birds and the Avengers celebrate beating the bad guy by getting a meal.
You’re no doubt all familiar with the post-credits scene of The Avengers. Following Iron Man returning through the portal above New York and succeeding in shutting down the Chitauri, he jokes that he’s up for going for some shawarma. In the tag sequence, we then see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes chowing down in silence, looking tired and worse for wear but enjoying their meal nonetheless.

Birds of Prey has been marketed very much as Deadpool-level violence, but make it girl power. In reality, it's actually a surprisingly relatable depiction of one of the most powerful experiences of being a woman: the sisterhood that forms between near-strangers when in need. Instead of paying lip service to female empowerment or trying to spin complicated emotional bonds in a short time, the movie leans heavily on this common experience to create a movie that's as much about the lived experience of ordinary women as it is about a group of messed-up antiheroes.
In many ways, Birds of Prey is largely a metaphor for the instinctive way that so many women, even total strangers, will often close ranks and lend a hand to a sister in need. Unlike many other superhero "team-up" movies, Birds of Prey keeps its characters separate for much of the movie: their paths intersect here...

If we’re being honest, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has had a bit of an interesting release. Having hit theaters a couple of days ago, the film premiered to critical praise. It’s currently sitting at 81% with a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and our very own Matt Donato gave it four stars out of five in his review.
Despite the acclaim from both critics and fans alike though, the Dceu’s latest is not doing so hot at the box office, and is even on track to have a worse opening weekend than 2011’s Green Lantern. Granted, these numbers are solely based on the past two days, so things can always change down the line, but it’s a bit baffling nonetheless. And while it seems to be a hit for those who took the time (and paid the money) to go see it,...

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) tells the tale of Harley Quinn’s break up with The Joker, and how she comes to work alongside four other female characters to take down a common enemy, The Black Mask.
As a long-time fan of DC Comics, I’d say that director Cathy Yan kept the characters pretty close to their comic roots; Harley has gone from villain to anti-hero, Huntress’ origin is spot on, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead has her portrayal nailed,...

Margot Robbie’s superheroine spinoff “Birds of Prey” is landing with a somewhat disappointing $34 million opening weekend at 4,236 North American sites, estimates showed Saturday.
The figure deflates hopes that “Birds of Prey” will become a hit. It’s significantly below Warner Bros.’ pre-release forecast of $45 million while rivals had “Birds of Prey” pegged for a $55 million launch. Friday’s take totaled $13 million (including $4 million in Thursday previews) with opening day audiences giving the film a B+ Cinemascore, with audiences under 25 awarding it an A-.
“Birds of Prey,” which carries a reported $80 million price tag, centers on Robbie’s vigilante Harley Quinn teaming up with superheroes Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Reviews were generally favorable and led to an 82% “fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score.

"Birds Of Prey" is a vibrant, cheeky and stylised team-up of DC Comics' female anti-heroes,which is designed as a satire to show the position of women in the comic book universe. This is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe and a sort of a follow-up to the 2016-released "Suicide Squad".
While "Suicide Squad" was a convoluted drama with Harley Quinn as just one of the flawed characters of the film, in "Birds Of Prey" she outshines, making it feel more like a Harley Quinn solo film than an ensemble effort, especially since the titular group doesn't assemble until deep into the third act. This isn't exactly a negative thing, it simply means that some members of the ensemble get less focus than the others.
Billed on posters under the unwieldy title, "Birds Of Prey" (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), it is the second collaborative outing for the character,...

It may come as a surprise to filmgoers nowadays that there was a time when movies based on properties from DC Comics dominated the cineplexes. Fare like Superman: The Movie (1978) and Batman (1989) were the gold standards for comic-book adaptations and decent films based on Marvel properties were an unrealized dream for most fans. My how the times have changed, and DC finds itself lately with a plethora of offerings ranging from bad to worse to just awful—apart of course from Wonder Woman (2017). It is a pleasure then when something as unexpectedly entertaining and interesting as Birds of Prey is born from a collection of properties in the middle of what feel like such an endless creative drought.

Margot Robbie’s “Birds of Prey” is set to open well below forecasts, with about $34 million at 4,236 North American sites, early estimates showed on Friday.
Estimates for “Birds of Prey,” a spinoff of 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” had been in the $45 million to $55 million range, with Warner Bros. projecting an opening closer to $45 million.
“Birds of Prey,” which carries a reported $80 million price tag, touched down with $4 million on Thursday night. Reviews have been strong, earning the film a 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes — a reversal from “Suicide Squad’s” 27%.
The film made $7.8 million in early openings from 51 international markets on Wednesday and Thursday. Results were impacted in Asia due to theater closures following the coronavirus outbreak.

Though Margot Robbie is back as Harley Quinn, you wouldn’t call Birds of Prey a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. Sure, we first met the former Dr. Quinzel in David Ayer’s villain team-up flick, but no other characters from that film feature in this one. Not even Jared Leto’s Joker. Well, almost no others. Another Task Force X-er does technically appear in BoP, but not in the flesh.
This other Suicide Squad member is Captain Boomerang, with a mugshot of Jai Courtney’s Australian thief seen pinned up on the wall of a Gotham City Pd precinct. As Harley breaks into the place to free Cassandra Cain, she points to the picture and says: “Hey, I know that guy.” That’s the only reference we get to the character, but the fact that the cops are after him does heavily suggest that Digger Harkness has managed to...

With “Aquaman” back in 2018, the DC Extended Universe tried to sorta give itself a fresh start after all the immense drama over the first few years of DC’s attempt to match the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That film acknowledged that “Justice League” happened, but only in the most minimal way possible, with a passing mention of the villain Steppenwolf. “Birds of Prey,” on the other hand, makes references to “Suicide Squad” several times.
In a way, those references function not just as Harley Quinn’s declaration of independence from the Joker — but also of the current phase of DC films from the Zack Snyder era.
If you don’t believe me, let’s discuss the first big example of “Birds of Prey” bringing up its predecessor: in the prologue, when Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) blows up Ace Chemicals. That’s the location that, in DC lore, is where Harley became...

Near the climax of the deliriously entertaining Birds of Prey, our heroines–winking wrecking ball Harley Quinn, crossbow-wielding vigilante Huntress, the tough but caring Black Canary, and sighing Gotham City detective Renee Montoya–are ensconced at the top of a grimy carnival funhouse. Sociopathic henchman Victor Zsasz, a monster with peroxide hair, is there and aiming to kill. So the main target, Cassandra Cain, a young girl and expert pickpocket who happened to steal the city’s most coveted diamond. And ate it. Meanwhile, wide-smiling, stylish crime lord Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask, is en route and accompanied by an army of similarly masked killers.
