A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.
There is a Democratic race, too. Joe Biden is not on the ballot,...

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

CNN has cut some staffers from its audio team, in what the network said was a change in strategy at the division.
A CNN spokesperson said, “Audio is an important growth area for the company. Over the last several years we’ve learned a lot about the topics and productions that most resonate with our audiences. As a result, we’ve refined our strategy to focus our resources more specifically in those areas.”
Business Insider reported that eight people were affected, and they were sales and editorial positions. A network source said that “a small number of changes” but that it was “a relatively small group.”
CNN’s audio division has produced a number of podcasts, including a recently launched series in which Anderson Cooper explores loss and grief. Other podcasts are hosted by on-air personalities including Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Harry Enten, as well as The Axe Files with David Axelrod.

Exclusive: CNN is unveiling a slate of new limited series podcasts for this fall, including one focusing on California’s 2003 recall and another hosted by Clarissa Ward, who recently was reporting on the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan.
Other podcasts include ones hosted by Harry Enten, longtime podcaster Aminatou Sow, and a companion series from Hln.
With California Gov. Gavin Newsom facing a recall on Sept. 14, the Total Recall: California’s Political Circus podcast, hosted by Dana Bash, will look back at what happened in 2003, when voters ousted Gov. Gray Davis in favor of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although this year’s recall has its share of celebrity candidates and fame seekers, more than 100 candidates sought the governorship in the 2003 race. Bash, CNN’s chief political correspondent, “will unpack the scandal, partisanship, and celebrity of the Golden State’s 2003 recall election – and explore what it might have forecasted about politics today,” according to CNN.

Bad news for anyone who had hopes of enjoying a few rancor-free months of 2019 before the presidential-election insanity begins. Not only is the race fully on, we’re already in our third or fourth toxic electoral narrative — the most recent involving that most infamous campaign cliché, “electability.”
The target was Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-ma) this week, but it’ll be a half-dozen other candidates by June, when (insanely) the Democrats will reportedly hold their first way-too-early primary debates.
The 2020 race unofficially began on December 12th, when former Hud Secretary Julian...

MSNBC viewers know they can watch Stephanie Ruhle each weekday during daytime hours. But on Election Night, the anchor will show up at night on what may be an unexpected video perch.
Ruhle, best known for doing two hours a day on the NBCUniversal cable network, will do another hour on Tuesday, November 6, at 7 a.m. in a relatively new venue for NBC News. Her early-evening show, meant to serve a sort of preview to NBC News’ main primetime coverage on its broadcast network, will stream on Signal, the news division’s new streaming outlet. “We do have a lot of digital plays that are new for this season,” says Rashida Jones, senior vice president of specials at NBC News and MSNBC, who also oversees the new broadband effort. Ruhle, she says, “will do her live show with the same energy she brings to you every day on cable.”
