I put a picture of Trevor Douglas with my Wednesday night "American Idol" recap, because I figured that even with a bad performance last week, he was still likely to advance. I was wrong. American made some interesting choices when it came to the Boys but will voters have better or more predictable judgment when it comes to the Girls? Click through, follow along, comment below and let's find out! 8:01 p.m. Et. Ryan Seacrest is Really keeping things casual for these Detroit shows, eh? 8:02 p.m. Same deal as last night: Eight girls will be called to perform. The other four? Eliminated. Up first? Singer: Tyanna Jones Song: "Rockin' Robin" My Take: Easy call, America. But at least you got it right. With her infectious smile, infectious voice and infectious blue tinted hair, Tyanna is... ummm... infectious. This performance is just about having fun and, as a result,...

Ok. Maybe Wednesday night's horribly paced performance night for the Top 12 Boys took me a bit by surprise. Perhaps knowing what's coming for Thursday (February 26) night's Top 12 Girls performances will make it a bit easier to stomach. Or maybe not. 8:01 p.m. Et. "Let's get ready to party," Ryan Seacrest says aggressively. Singer: Lovey James Song: "Love Runs Out" My Take: The song starts too low and Lovey can't get her breath at all. As it gradually moves up, Lovey's at least in range, but she also become shout-y and perhaps too excited or emotional. There are good moments in the second half, but also bad moments when Lovey's trying to be heard over the band and failing. There's energy here, but I'm sure I'll have forgotten this performance in 55 minutes. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr Say: J-Lo thought it was awesome. Harry thought it was good.

We're back! Last night, "American Idol" filled half of its Season 14 Top 24, leaving another 12 House of Blues performances to hint at, another 12 Green Mile walks to tease and probably several more moments of awkwardness that hopefully won't be as bad as what went down last night with Maddie Walker and Rachel Hallack. Be decisive "Idol" judges! And don't dick little kids around. And now... Thursday's (February 19) episode... 8:01 p.m. Let's get back to Hollywood Anderson, eh? We loved Hollywood in his first audition in New York City, but then we didn't love him nearly as much in Hollywood, which verges on ironic. Hollywood's House of Blues performance seems like it was Ok, but if Hollywood is advancing, it'll still mostly be on the wings of that first audition. Apparently he didn't do enough. It's back to busking for Hollywood. "Y'all saw me for me," Hollywood says with gratitude. That first audition was so good,...

The following equation recently appeared on a standardized math test for third graders, thanks to the Common Core State Standards Initiative:
American Idol selected 48 Season 14 contestants to perform at a showcase at Los Angeles’ House of Blues — with the goal of having its three judges (and a team of no fewer than 37 producers) whittle the field down to 24 vocalists who’ll compete for the public vote. If the final roster of contestants must be split evenly by gender — and 12 hopefuls were shown advancing on Wednesday night’s telecast, then who’s likeliest to advance in the night’s final battle:...

After spinning wheels with two straight Group Round episodes in which almost nothing happened, "American Idol" may start making some tough cuts tonight. Fox is promising that we're gonna get down to the Top 48 tonight, which still leaves many cuts to come, but at least things will begin to take shape for the season. Follow along as we get to trimming... 8:01 p.m. Et. Slick product plug, "Idol." The judges are prepared to cut half of the remaining contestants after Solo Round. 8:02 p.m. Up first? Affected Actress Lauren Lott, whose grandmother is in the crowd. Lauren does a decent, but emotion-free cover of "Skyfall." I really don't think anybody's going to vote for Lauren,...

When last we left "American Idol," they'd cut a bunch of people from Hollywood Week, albeit nobody we'd been made to care about in the slightest. And as last Thursday's episode ended, Alexis Granville was clinging to life. Or, at the very least, Alexis Granville was having a panic attack. What comes next? "It's always a very telling day," J-Lo says, sitting up in the balcony with the other judges. 8:02 p.m. But back to Alexis Granville and the subsequent time-out. Recovered from her anxiety attack, Alexis made it back on the stage with Sal's Gal. Sal Valentinetti won some good faith with his kindness to Alexis and he does his Rat Pack thing. Alexis warbles uncertainly. Jax mewls and growls soulfully. There were several other people in that group we didn't hear solo. Boo. Harry Connick Jr....

I'm not sure how often "American Idol" has done Hollywood Week, or how often Hollywood Week has reached its climax with group performances, but the reality is that group performances have almost always been anti-climatic and low-drama, but every once in a while somebody totally freaks and the drama is tremendous. Will Thursday (February 5) night's show feature a gripping Group Round? Or a fizzle in which one or two people forget lyrics, one or two people go to bed earlier and nobody really cares? Let's find out... 8:00 p.m. Et. When we left things, Gabby Z was freaking out a little, which would have been much more exciting if I knew who Gabby Zonnenveld was or if the competition would be the poorer in her absence. Will she pull out of her tail-spin? Harry Connick Jr to the rescue! He comes up on-stage, takes Gabby aside and tells her to recover her composure.

A random thought crossed my mind tonight while watching American Idol‘s Season 14 audition episode from Kansas City: What if Goldilocks hadn’t found a single bowl of porridge that met her exacting standards? What if not one of the three bears’ beds had proven suitable for her afternoon respite?
Girl might’ve just wandered out of the woods, been admitted to her local hospital with a case of mild hypothermia, treated and released. Not much of a story, huh?
Similarly, I’d gander that Idol‘s latest hour is one of the least likely in show history to penetrate the pop-cultural consciousness.
