The first week of the American Idol season 15 semifinals was pretty typical, in that a handful of the singers stood out, there were some average performances and of course we saw some weak performances. The big surprise was the collapse of fan-favorite Emily Brooke.
For the second week, though, it was still a mixed bag, but this time most of the performances were just not good, to put it simply. And even when a couple of the contestants had good voices, they were marred by bad song choices.

One of the great mysteries of American Idol‘s farewell season is its failure to snag Red Bull as a sponsor for its semifinal rounds.
There’s been a “blinked? you missed it!” Usain Bolt-ish pacing to these telecasts, in which a dozen performances and 36 individual critiques — plus some pithy “meet the contestants!” packages — get crammed into approximately 42 minutes of airtime.

Welcome back to the rapid-fire portion of American Idol: The Farewell Season, with the second half of the Top 24 set to hit the stage for 12 solo semifinal performances crammed into 60 frantic minutes (like 42 if you count commercials).
The first half of our Top 14 have been chosen by the judges after a few noteworthy performances, and whether you love or hate the new "America the Moot-iful" format, they mostly got it right. James VIII and Jordan Sasser barely belonged to make it to the showcase, Emily Brooke crapped the bed once she got in the spotlight, and Jenna Renae failed to stand out in any meaningful way.

It’s the end of the road for five of our top 24, as only seven will remain from the first round of 12 performers. I like how the producers have switched things up for the farewell season of American Idol, and have included these showcase rounds. I think former Idols returning to serve as mentors as well as duet partners is fitting for the last chapter in this 15 season story. Emily Brooke And Season 10 Runner-up Lauren Alaina: Both of these young ladies were 15 when they first auditioned for Idol, and both auditioned in the city of Nashville.

No one left the cake out in the rain during Thursday’s American Idol semifinal results show, but producers may have yanked it out of the oven when it was still making the transition from lukewarm batter to delicious baked good.

The American Idol season 15 semifinals are underway, with the first night of performances now behind us. A couple contestants really shined, some were average and then there were a couple duds -- including one from a fan-favorite, which was surprising.
Now that the first group of semifinalists have performed, it's time for the duets with Idol alums and then the judges will decide which five singers are going to be eliminated. So who will be those unfortunate victims? The duets could certainly change the judges' minds for some of the singers (especially someone like Emily Brooke), but after hearing the solo performances, here are the five that I predict will be heading home.

We may have gotten past the side-eye-inducing drama of American Idol‘s Group Rounds, but rest assured, executive producer Trish Kinane and her mischievous band of editors aren’t going to let this Farewell Season run on the fuel of vocal performances alone.

We're back! Last night, "American Idol" filled half of its Season 14 Top 24, leaving another 12 House of Blues performances to hint at, another 12 Green Mile walks to tease and probably several more moments of awkwardness that hopefully won't be as bad as what went down last night with Maddie Walker and Rachel Hallack. Be decisive "Idol" judges! And don't dick little kids around. And now... Thursday's (February 19) episode... 8:01 p.m. Let's get back to Hollywood Anderson, eh? We loved Hollywood in his first audition in New York City, but then we didn't love him nearly as much in Hollywood, which verges on ironic. Hollywood's House of Blues performance seems like it was Ok, but if Hollywood is advancing, it'll still mostly be on the wings of that first audition. Apparently he didn't do enough. It's back to busking for Hollywood. "Y'all saw me for me," Hollywood says with gratitude. That first audition was so good,...

“Can anybody find me somebody to love?”
I posed one of Queen’s most plaintive lyrics for most of Wednesday’s American Idol “Group Rounds” telecast — and unfortunately, only a handful of contestants answered the call. There were forgotten lyrics, cacophonous harmonies, a few instances of face-down-on-the-carpet exhaustion and a smattering of “I didn’t come here to make friends” squawking. But “Holy crap, I want to know that contestant’s 877-number so I can start voting for him/her right this second!” vocals were in short supply.

Sorry for the three "American Idol" recaps I missed the past two weeks. The combination of film responsibilities at the Sundance Film Festival and predictably atrocious wifi at the Sundance Film Festival had me casting aside some of my TV responsibilities. But I'm back and I'm all caught up after rushing through three "Idol" episodes in around 90 minutes over the weekend. There were some pretty good singers in New Orleans and San Francisco. I'd point to Maddy Hudson, Greyson Turner, Tyanna Jones, Rocky Peter and Hunter Larsen as just a few performers I'd be happy to see/hear again if the opportunity presents itself. Ditto with Carlos Santana's nephew and a few of the White Guys With Guitars who were better-than-generic, but not immediately nameable in my memory. We're starting Hollywood Week on Wednesday (February 4), so follow along! 8:00 p.m. Et. In case we've forgotten, in order to become American Idol,...

The auditions are now over for American Idol season 14. Looking back over the past four weeks, we saw some great talent, including Emily Brooke, Savion Wright, Maddy Hudson, Rayvon Owen and many more. Some of the cities were a little short on talent, unfortunately. But Hollywood Week will be able to weed out the singers not ready for this competition yet.
Before we get there, though, let's take a look back at the final audition episode from San Francisco.

American Idol returned this week with a two-night, three-hour premiere for season 14, and the talent has been out in full force. On Wednesday, we were treated to my favorite singer so far, Emily Brooke, along with other great voices from the likes of Michael Simeon, Cameron Bedell and Riley Bria.
Thursday night's episode continued with the Nashville auditions, and the judges also traveled to Kansas City to hear contestants from the Idol Bus Tour auditions. Has anyone noticed that there are a lot of big personalities this year, especially from the advancing singers? Maybe after Sam Woolf and Alex Preston last year, the producers didn't want singers as timid as them.

American Idol is determined to discover a Carrie Underwood-level superstar in 2015 — as the show’s promotional tour and ad campaign keep reminding us — but it probably wouldn’t be bad for ratings if it managed to land a fourth husband for Jennifer Lopez, either.
I’m not trying to besmirch the good name of the Artist Formerly Known as an In Living Color Fly Girl. After all, she’s the one who commanded flirty 20-year-old Michael Simeon to take their slow dance from middle-school chaste to senior-prom snuggly all while he crooned Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” during his Nashville audition.

"American Idol" is back for Season 14 and it's important to remind you: The last two winners have been Candice Glover and Caleb Johnson. For the past few years, the ability to make stars has been the thing "Idol" has used to set it apart from the higher-rated "Voice." It's not like the coronation of Phillip Phillips, an artist with probably more album sales than every "Voice" winner combined, was that long ago, but in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business, "Idol" could use another breakout soon. [Note that ratings were Way down for "The Voice" this past season, as the NBC singing competition appears to have peaked and be heading into the predictable slide that almost all competition shows eventually go into. While pundits love to talk trash about the decline in "Idol" ratings, folks were oddly silent about "The Voice" in the fall. Shrug.] Expect more declines for "Idol" this season, but a breakout, incandescent star might help. So let's get down to the business of recapping Wednesday (January 7) night's premiere! With Fox sending out screeners, the live-blog times line up with episode time-code and not with any time from a real clock. Oh and Thursday's (January 8) two-hour...
