From the tip of his pompadour to the heels of his boots there is no mistaking Dandy for a serious man. His adventures include hunting for galactic ramen, brokering peace between clothing-obsessed aliens and participating in a high school musical. So it comes as a surprise that the eleventh episode of Space Dandy , the show that bears his name, is quite serious indeed. It begins with Dandy holding a box he can’t remember acquiring. When his boss Scarlet opens it by mistake, the world turns red and then monochrome. Inside the box is a mysterious book. That’s just the start. “I’m Never Remembering You, Baby” is one of the most unsettling episodes in the series. It portrays Dandy as not foolish but unreliable and vulnerable as well. He travels to a planet that substitutes the show’s typical bright colors for crumbling charcoal architecture. Meanwhile, Dandy’s archnemesis,...

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Space Dandy"
Where You Can Stream It: Crunchyroll
The Pitch: "It's the new show by Shinichiro Watanabe." That's all people needed to get excited for "Space Dandy," a series pitched as a spiritual successor to anime classics "Cowboy Bebop" and "Samurai Champloo." "Bebop" defined the adolescence of American anime fandom with its stylish, sad storytelling on Adult Swim in 2001. Since then, the runaway success of "Attack on Titan" on streaming services in 2013 transformed anime into an international hitmaker. Popular American cartoons like "Steven Universe" borrowed from anime, and their artists would say as much in interviews. Now one of the medium's greatest producers and auteurs, after years of toil behind the scenes, was ready to blow everybody away with an all-new vision.

Erratic would be an appropriate word to best describe the track record of Godzilla in anime. Generally speaking, the King of the Monsters’ appearances in the medium have been primarily cross-over specials or brief segments within a show or movie. An example is Mamoru Oshii’s film “Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer,” which, in one scene, features the characters in a theater watching Ishiro Honda’s 1954 classic. As for actual entries to the popular franchise, the first major attempt was an unfortunate misfire. The Polygon Pictures trilogy, while full of interesting ideas and concepts, sadly fell flat in execution and was further hurt by underwhelming visuals. Regardless, their success was enough of a motivator for Toho Animation to produce another project. A few years later, the iconic kaiju’s next major attempt at anime would be with the series “Godzilla Singular Point.” This time, the results are glorious.
